Why can’t Joji say something simple like “Gimme love”? what do you want him to say melon? “give me the sensation of neural networks quantum entangled electromagnetic radiation”?
I was wondering the same - not to mention it adds emphasis on the theatrical elements of the song when in the second half he explicitly transitions to "Give me love" in proper english rather than sticking to the prior slang of "gimme love".

I really think the repetitiveness of the chorus "GIMME GIMME LOVE, GIMME GIMME LOVE." was him begging for affection from the person he was in a relationship with after being so starved of said "LOVE" for so long. Its like a cry for help or him just having enough of the emotional neglect his partner has given him and he's demanding the love he knows he deserves, especially in his lowest/darkest times when he needs them the most.
@@feyn5869 I 100% agree. i really do like this song, but i just felt as if the chorus was corny and a little too "pop" for what joji is known for. the second part is what really makes the song.
The chorus is pure ad jingle, and I think it’s deliberately so. He’s writing an ear-worm chorus that works with the beat to pull you in, and then he hits you with some melancholy in the verses. The second half is epic. Great song. Thanks for reviewing it!
Joji's talking about his youtube days and transitioning from the thing he did and somewhat enjoyed and now becoming what he wanted to be (my opinion is based on the song and the Music video) which has its visually stunning moments aswell.
this is what I'm hearing too. the two halves of the song also kinda represent the transition from his older lo-fi, self produced style, to the stronger higher quality stuff with proper instrumentation and vocals etc.
@@Ryguy72800 yeah have u watched the music video too? he literally launches off into space in the second half of the song, like his career taking off haha

Laughing for 13 minutes and 26 seconds straight while pointing at his eyes and yelling “Coronalert! Coronalert!” repetitively was way out of line, Anthony. You should really know better by now.
I feel that Joji could have done better. Actually from his teasers on his Instagram I thought the single was gonna be a continuation of Run from the end of the music video. That might be a future track at some point. This song does not sound basic in the slightest, far from it, but compared to one of his best singles released, Run, it wasn't as good. It doesn't feel like a song I can put on a vibing playlist or repeat like Run was.
First time I heard it I hated it, because I hated the chorus, but then I told myself to listen to it again and when I heard the second part my ears came 🥺
Well to be perfectly honest, in my opinions, of course keeping in mind there are several points of view, but also looking into this matter from a different angle that sheds light on the hidden meaning, taking into account all the important points in this comments section, of course without making an objective claim, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say :(
The songs themselves are incredibly pleasant to listen to but i believe the eccentric, artistic music videos that are definitely done with Joji's previous cinematography in mind are what really sell these songs. Probably some of the most unique music videos I've seen yet for a well produced artist.
anthony, the review was on par but i don’t think calling him a zipperhead was a necessary touch especially since he didn’t even start the coronavirus like you said..
i really love joji. his lyrics and his whole vibe is interesting and i feel like it’s unique, gimme love it’s actually one of my favorite songs i never get tired of hearing it
Maybe the first part is sounding like what he used to sound and with the lyrics "gimme love" he is giving the fans that always complain about how he doesnt sound like he used to what they wanted, with the lyrics meaning something like he saying: " here is what u wanted, do you love me now? "
I really loved this song! And when it's combined with the music video, it really comes to life I think. He is clearly a man with a vision and has a story to tell!
I feel like the song was describing not a love story, but a story upon his life transition from filthy Frank into joji, and how much he has improved and showing his description to how he didnt think people would give him love as to his new persona of which is joji.
I think this is a song about him asking for more appreciation and love for all he’s went through and all he’s done to bring people the content he’s given us and i think he does deserve more love for his work my point being he did all that work in the video and in the end they didn’t want to give him the appreciation he deserved so he high jacked the rocket to take his work so they couldn’t have all the glory (by the way this is how sanctuary started i think)
I don't think it was a bad song, but I would have preferred the two halves of the song to be their own songs, give the upbeat part its own song (and maybe flesh it out a little better tbh) and give the slow emotional ending its own song. Maybe its just me but it just feels like two different projects thrown and stitched together
Going out on a limb here but perhaps this video is an analogy to Joji's growth as an artist. His early days reflect an amateur-like energy in both video and lyrical word usage and scenes of his growth and frustrations which leads to a point to the halfway point of the video where he must cast all his past aside and ascend beyond his previous expectations. His lyrics get deeper, his skill progress further, and his tracks higher production BUT comes at a cost of his peers and friends at the time (and his old fans) respect or their lack of love for him in this new state. He's ascended beyond our expectations, but it's lonely up there.
This is a review of Carly Rae Jepsen's track of the same name from her 2014 album, not the new Joji single. I'd like to see you review that one too though.
I think you summed up most of what I thought about the track. I also felt it was a little lacking lyrically and vocally compared to what we've seen him do, even just in the other two singles on this album, but I still liked it a lot. I wasn't as put off by the chorus as you were, I enjoy when he sings in that tone somewhere between the mumbling and high notes. (One reason I love Sanctuary so much) I've also been getting a bit of a vibe of his older work in this album, but definitely evolved. You can tell with every track he releases that he's still experimenting and growing. I miss his raps. I wonder if he'll ever explore that medium again. I remember him saying he didn't think he was very good at it in an interview, but I disagree. I'd love to see him do something like She's So Nice or Fried Noodles again, with the raps broken up by smooth melodies, now that he's evolved so much. Not saying he has to be comedic or filthy in them; it would just be interesting to see him use the format again.
This reminds me of a song by the alternative band "Interpol" called "P.D.A" where the majority of the song is mediocre or a solid 6/10 until you get to the outro which seems like it should be its own song, much more elegant and beautiful and completely different style
I think both parts mix pretty well together . In one part we hear a little bit of an earlier Joji sound with that “simplicity” and all of that mood, but then at the second part we can hear the new, more harmonious singer he has become. It’s just so good
Nice review. I think that if joji start doing songs with the energy like the ending of gimme love, he can be easily an huge and notorious artist. Much more famous. But I kinda understand, he was telling an story.
The music videos from these singles make it seem like he's setting up a "joji-verse"....I am not mad at that. Edit: also I don't think you're right about this being a love song btw Fantano...
I think this is gonna be Joji's strongest album yet. Every track he's released until this point has been a banger for me, my favorite being Run. The track, the fucking music video, it's all so good. I like run better than this, but this better than sanctuary...that ending is just way too good. It makes the first half better
So far I’d rank the singles 1. Sanctuary 2. Gimme Love 3. Run
I have mixed feelings on the track too Melon but I wouldn't go so far as to trash it for being "oriental" in nature, that was a bit much
The chorus is pure ad jingle, and I think it’s deliberately so.
@@EuanMacLennan Yea Its like hes talking to his older fans too, throughout the song somehow but IDK
@@Ryguy72800 yeah have u watched the music video too? he literally launches off into space in the second half of the song, like his career taking off haha
@@EuanMacLennan Bro I feel that, also Like if you try to read lips of the other guys I swear two of them are yelling frank before he leaves and after.
@@weetbix4497 it's defo open to interpretation for sure. he flipped them off as he was leaving tho so it think stealing the rocket was more of a fuck you, than it was him escaping his guilt
Anthony, you didn't have to shoot ropes all over Joji. He wasn't asking for that kind of love.
Laughing for 13 minutes and 26 seconds straight while pointing at his eyes and yelling “Coronalert! Coronalert!” repetitively was way out of line, Anthony. You should really know better by now.
Jeez Anthony, you can’t call Japanese people goblins, that’s offensive.
Jesus christ, almost 6 mins of racial slurs, completely uncalled for.
This isn’t @ MEH track review Melon
review the Oingo Boingo bootleg "Marching in Time"
do it
It would be crazy if Joji & Frank Ocean make a collab project and call it Filthy Frank Ocean
ew
I feel that Joji could have done better. Actually from his teasers on his Instagram I thought the single was gonna be a continuation of Run from the end of the music video. That might be a future track at some point. This song does not sound basic in the slightest, far from it, but compared to one of his best singles released, Run, it wasn't as good. It doesn't feel like a song I can put on a vibing playlist or repeat like Run was.
“gibe l0ve pls” - Anthony Fantano, 2020
can i habe de lobe pls b0ss
When he was listening and I saw the faces he made I was like *Y* *E* *S*
Probably some of the most unique music videos I've seen yet for a well produced artist.
anthony, the review was on par but i don’t think calling him a zipperhead was a necessary touch especially since he didn’t even start the coronavirus like you said..
i really love joji. his lyrics and his whole vibe is interesting and i feel like it’s unique, gimme love it’s actually one of my favorite songs i never get tired of hearing it
I believe the mediocrity of the beginning was intentional.
Logan Stickly really? What do you mean?
@SeriousPhilipe Hence the low quality and choppiness of the first half of the video versus the cinematic, gorgeous shots in the second half
You’re so close to a million subs, I congratulations!!! Love your content man!
Loved the review, but calling Joji a "coin-slot eye'd gook" was unnecessary
But coin slot eyes drop the panties ;(
Anthony Fantano is like the definition of the kid who majored in Music Theory but never learned an instrument.

Beautiful
Maybe the first part is sounding like what he used to sound and with the lyrics "gimme love" he is giving the fans that always complain about how he doesnt sound like he used to what they wanted, with the lyrics meaning something like he saying: " here is what u wanted, do you love me now? "
Anthony, I think you’re going a little too far with the whole: “we should’ve dropped the third bomb on them” while reviewing the track...
Also for anyone whose excited at getting a "long" Joji album. He usually makes short songs so keep that in mind.
Derelict Country past 3 songs have been well into the 3 minute mark even nearing 4
Gimme love kinda doesn't count. But I'd love to be wrong
Sorry Fantano, but I already have an opinion on this song.
I really loved this song! And when it's combined with the music video, it really comes to life I think. He is clearly a man with a vision and has a story to tell!
jeez athony, we don’t call them “zipperheads” anymore.
HITC1: 5/10
BALLADS 1: 5/10
5+5=10
Nectar is 10/10 confirmed
Eehhh... Kinda off
One day Anthony’s gonna review my music... I’m working for that 10/10 😬
FIVE6ix good luck 🤣
Great review but you didn’t have to constantly refer to Joji as a “dirty foreigner” that seemed a little unneeded
i actually really liked the hook, and was impressed by the first half of the song
I feel like the song was describing not a love story, but a story upon his life transition from filthy Frank into joji, and how much he has improved and showing his description to how he didnt think people would give him love as to his new persona of which is joji.
I legitimately held off on listening to this so that melon could give me my opinion
Are you joking
[hands you a spine][hands you a spine][hands you a spine][hands you a spine][hands you a sp
imagine not thinking for yourself lol
Imagine not realizing this comment is a joke
I never understood why lyrics have to be complex or poetic to be good. Lyrics can be simple and still be really good
*next review the “LISTENING” song*
I think this is a song about him asking for more appreciation and love for all he’s went through and all he’s done to bring people the content he’s given us and i think he does deserve more love for his work my point being he did all that work in the video and in the end they didn’t want to give him the appreciation he deserved so he high jacked the rocket to take his work so they couldn’t have all the glory (by the way this is how sanctuary started i think)
5:57 "FOREV-"
I don't think it was a bad song, but I would have preferred the two halves of the song to be their own songs, give the upbeat part its own song (and maybe flesh it out a little better tbh) and give the slow emotional ending its own song. Maybe its just me but it just feels like two different projects thrown and stitched together
But isn't the whole 'gimme gimme love' hook meant to be ironic?
Or not ironic but just to give more impact to the rest of the track due to how strikingly different it is
Going out on a limb here but perhaps this video is an analogy to Joji's growth as an artist.
Woke up to this song this morning and got straight full body chills listening to the second half of the song
This reminds me of a song by the alternative band "Interpol" called "P.D.A" where the majority of the song is mediocre or a solid 6/10 until you get to the outro which seems like it should be its own song, much more elegant and beautiful and completely different style
melon you didnt have to rate this track "bring back pink guy/10" wtf
His hair is growing! Damn, Joji has some magical music for hair growth.
Funny way to spell "Playboi Carti: @ MEH TRACK REVIEW"
Personally, the song Sanctuary has grown on me a lot since the first time I heard it
last time i was this early anthony had a full head of hair
I think both parts mix pretty well together . In one part we hear a little bit of an earlier Joji sound with that “simplicity” and all of that mood, but then at the second part we can hear the new, more harmonious singer he has become. It’s just so good
*Melon it doesn't seem right to hate the song just because he's asian.*
Not to mention the music videos for these could be considered a condensed short film series. I'm so proud of George.
