  • Today's video is different...it had to be!
I haven't felt well, I haven't had sales in a week, AND it has prevented me from going out shopping & filming!
SO, I already have too much to sell, so it's a good thing it prevented me from buying too much.
Not to mention, it really is responsible reselling to avoid a disastrous mess.
I hope you enjoy today's video filled with many beautiful items.
From vintage to antique, glass, paper, books, pottery, we have a little of something for everyone!
    ❤️

I believe items need to be as clean as possible before being sold. With our estate sale business, we make sure everything is cleaned, wiped off or dusted. I even have to vacuum/sweep floors, clean bathrooms, kitchen sink, remove cobweb’s, etc. We’ve had sales where every single dish, glassware, knick knacks have all needed to be cleaned. Is it more preparation time, yes, but the comments and sales are so worth it! I do not like to have a dirty sale. Dirty sales/items turn me off! You do such a wonderful job , Michael!

I see some sellers on eBay who say they don't clean items so as not to destroy the patina. That is fine on brass, copper or silver items, but dirt on glass is not patina. It is them just being lazy. Also on baskets, wooden items, books iron or tin toys, dolls, ceramics and numerous other tings, a little dusting is not going to affect the "patina". Do leave unframed prints, lithographs and oil or water color paintings to the experts other than a light dusting with a soft brush or feather duster. Take pride in what you selling and make people feel you value your items and respect them.

An unclean item makes me wonder if the seller missed any flaws due to the dirt. I have purchased items at The Bins and Goodwill which were dirty, and I missed damage that I couldn't see for the filth. Fortunately, I didn't pay much.

If I was selling items I would want them to be cleaned. Same goes for buying items. I get these items are vintage/antique but cleaning them makes them more appealing to purchase.

I agree with you about cleaning items. I keep a booth at a local antique mall, and I clean everything before placing it in my booth. I don’t expect a dirty item to be sold for full retail. I want my items to be as pretty and appealing as possible and for my customers to have the best buying experience. You have selected some lovely items for your next sale. I really enjoy your videos. Best wishes to you and your family.

I even clean basic light dust off before packing - if an item has been sitting a bit because they might not see it at first, but they will feel it when they touch it!!

There's dirty/dusty vs filthy. Dirty doesn't bother me. But if it's filthy, I am passing. Plus, you do have to be careful if you are going to clean something. You don't want to devalue an item. But filth...PASS. Love you by the way! I enjoy watching you so much.

Things need to be clean, i even get turned off on dusty booths! A barn haul is expected to be dirty. But a thrift
store , booth and auction should have clean merchandise!

As a seller, how you present your goods shows a lot about you personally. So cleaning an item and having it in the best condition for your buyer shows that you genuinely care about your customers perception. That goes with any business. You wouldn't want a hairdresser with butchered hair to style your hair, you wouldn't want a cook with a nasty kitchen making your food. It's all about standards and perception. So the cleaner, more organized, and shopper friendly, the more likely that you can get higher prices for your goods. Making a customer Happy is never out of style. ❤

I have a copy of the James Whitcomb Riley book, An Old Sweetheart of Mine. I was told that my grandfather gave it to my grandmother when they were married in 1912. Riley was born and lived in Indiana. Both of my grandparents were born in Indiana and I'm still here in my 70s. 😊

I agree with the condition vs price. I’ve bought things on eBay off and on for over 20 years, and sometimes I’ve received things that are absolutely filthy! I once pulled a planter from the shipping box, and dirt fell out all over my floor. I know I’m buying a secondhand item, but I expect it to be clean! Don’t sell dirty stuff!!! The exception is when the decision to clean might be controversial. Sometimes it’s best to let the buyer decide how clean they want the item to be (patina is often a good thing). I went to an antique mall recently that was just plain dirty, and left feeling like I needed a shower. I didn’t buy anything - her prices were all full-on retail, regardless of the filth and the fact that many items were cracked and/or chipped.

I bought a mid-century black panther planter on eBay and it had potting soil in it as well as looking like it hadn't been cleaned in decades. I couldn't believe they shipped dirt! I feel like it shows disrespect for the item and for the buyer. (He was a shiny black beauty after I was done, though!) As for the Magic Erasers, I have not had that problem. I buy the off-brand ones, too. I use them until they get so thin that they get a hole through them.

  • @agomodern
    @agomodern 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Magic Eraser because they magically disappear when used. I've always known them to do that. Yeah, I buy and sell mid-century modern furniture and I see ridiculous prices on pieces that need restoration. I have been getting super frustrated because I restore all of the furniture pieces I sell if they need it, and people selling out of their garage expect to get more for their pieces in rough shape.

I definitely agree things should be cleaned before being sold especially at full retail. I know your original tag line was keep it rusty, crusty or dusty- but don’t charge for it!!😂Surprising people simply don’t have pride in what they sell🤷‍♀️Clearly you do! The effort shows! Also hate the lure of 50% off when it’s all just overpriced or the sales except “firm” folks. I rarely patronize any dealer that insults my intelligence 🤨

I really enjoyed the relaxed feel of this video. I’m sorry you are still not feeling well. Perhaps Richard could mix you a hot toddy tonight. Some Kentucky bourbon 🥃 with lemon juice or peppermint and a shot of warm honey 🍯. It will either make you feel better or you won’t care 😂‼️
When it comes to dirty inventory, I feel that, if you don’t care enough about your items to present them at their best, you probably don’t care enough about your customers to disclose any flaws in your product. I expect lower prices on dirty inventory . I don’t mind cleaning items, if I acquire them at a low price point.
Poor Mr. Clean 🧽, he’s getting old and falling apart, just like the rest of us! 😂
Thank you so much, Michael, for spending time with us.

I don't like to buy dirty Vintage in a shop! I don't have the time, and I'm not always sure it will clean up nice! There's always the exception if the price is right, but as a rule it offends my senses!😅 But at least I have the choice! What's worse is getting something online that comes in musty and dirty!
That's one of the many reasons I love buying from you Michael!💖 I've never received anything dirty or stinky from you!💕
And I agree, What's up with the magic erasers!😕 I'm so glad you're feeling better! Love😘

With filthy pieces at full price, it depends on how hard it is to find , and how badly I want it. I have seen some beautiful pieces, destroyed by an over zealous cleaning with the wrong chemicals and/or materials. I also triple check to make sure the grunge isn’t masking a flaw or crack in the piece. Loved the Empoli piece, great colour and form.🖤🇨🇦

Sorry you’re feeling under the weather. A good collection you had built. Yes I agree with you on being out off on someone selling that is dirty. I would usually just pass on them I feel no telling where it’s been basically, and just turned off on them. I used to sell vintage glass items. And I’ve always too pride in the items I sell either in my vintage booth or online. That’s what I feel if one’s signature as being a seller that takes pride in what they sell. And that speaks volumes about a sellers character. That’s just me and my opinion. Not sure if anyone else fells the same ways as I. Hope you start to s feeling better. Love your videos as always have a blessed day😊

Sometimes I actually go to far and take something beck to brand new shiny and then I add a little antiquing to add some of the color and dimension back to a piece. Yes I agree about magic sponges but they are a bit of a PITA now. A big mess! I would have saved the love poems for Valentine's Day. They would look so pretty in a Valentine's display tied with ribbons. The roses book is amazing

I noticed that also about the magic erasers. Why are they falling apart so easily now?! They changed something.

I also agree that an item should be cleaned as best as possible before sale. Although, as in silver or other metal, I don’t think the patina should be removed. I would leave it up to the buyer to decide whether to shine it up or not. I loved the Riley Roses book. Even though it was unassuming on the outside, it was magical on the inside. Loved it! If you ever come across old French or Russian books (children’s stories, poetry, novels) from the same era, I’d very interested.
