@@FernStone It just didn't get as much attention as some of the others, but Lorde obviously liked it because her live performances at the time usually began with this song.
It's crazy because this album came out when I was eight and I completely idealized it!! But as a teenager and a somewhat outcast (even though that is my whole generation at this point lol) I relate to it SO much, and your comment resonated with me...young me would be happy haha
it's incredible to see how pure heroine has some many relations with melodrama. ribs always makes me wanna cry! even if i'm 20, lol. its a such good song! really love ur reactions! ;) from brazil here
pure heroine is my favorite lorde album it just really feels like a nostalgic coming of age album to me. top three songs are ribs, glory and gore, and buzzcut season (replace buzzcut season with bravado if we're counting extended tracks! which you should do!)
Lorde exhibited so much talent and artistry at the age of 17. Her mother played a big role in this. Her mother is an award-winning poet in New Zealand and also a teacher. She encouraged Ella (Lorde) to read variety of genres and this influenced her songwriting skills. Her style, starting with Royals, changed pop music (that's why she reminds you of Billie Eilish among others). Lorde is famous for using the myxolydian mode of chord structure hence you feel that her music seems to sit somewhere in between minor and major chords. Her music ushered in the minimalist and experimental style of pop---from the vocals to the sounds. Pure Heroine is all about youth and the disillusionment and bravado that come with it. Melodrama is all about relationships (I watched your video reaction to the album---thanks for the wonderful review! and your voice sounds so great). In between Pure Heroine and Melodrama, she broke up with her boyfriend of several years. I think that influenced the direction of Melodrama. For me, Pure Heroine is angsty; Melodrama is angry (but her anger here is the type that comes with sadness and occasional despair and self-loathing). My favorites from this album are 400 Lux, Ribs, and Team. But I like Melodrama more---it's in my list of my top albums of all time. I guess I enjoyed getting caught up in her storm. David Bowie once caller her the future of music and she was chosen by Bowie's family to sing Life on Mars (together with Bowie's own band) at the BRIT Awards' tribute to David Bowie after his death.
Her Brain at the very young age is astonishing… she’s a walking poetry. ❤️ Her lyrics at this album was already insane.. she’s so unique And this album changes the modern pop. And how artists got inspired by her.
I never noticed this until watching your reaction but it almost feels like Buzzcut Season is about imagining you're with a loved one during a War. Or imagining you're living in a more peaceful time with that loved one
it's the first video reaction about Pure Heroine i really enjoyed til the end, thank you so much, LOVE YOOOOOU, hope someday you'll react to M.I.A. - MATANGY album it is insane how people sleep on her talent
Wow, this album is great, I don't think I've heard the whole thing before! I need to listen to some more Lorde... Thanks for another great reaction, I also enjoy it when you delve into the lyrics of what you're listening to :D
Loved this reaction. I’ve seen you’ve done a Bjork reaction (as part of your Arca deep drive), but you NEED to listen (and hopefully love) her album, Homogenic. It’s an absolute classic. And your synesthesia will go into overdrive in the best possible way.
I.m.h.o. this first album is still her best creative work so far. For me nothing came close to it afterwards, yet. Love the experimental sound expressions on that in combination with lyrics sharp as a blade and as self-reflective as sometimes sarcastic.
Hi Fern thanks for your reaction. I think it really picked up for me around Buzzcut Season...the layers in White Teeth Teans. I'll have to have another listen.
Oh I’m so looking forward to “hanging” with you & Lorde after a long Saturday when .. you notice all the gross things your kids have done to your home. The things your mind has kindly been blocking, until today, when I had my day of gross surprises. I think you’ll get that. This is perfect to sit down to and let my gaze wander kindly, again. Two of my favourite women to virtually vibe with. Thank you!! So necessary. Much love to you.
Omg you are so young still, little sister dear. Lots of years of creativity/medicine still. In 2013 I was .. I always forget my age.. but I was not 17 (+20ish).
Someone most definitely has pointed this out already but I LOVE how the album begins with "Don't you think that it's boring how people talk?" and ends with "Let them talk"... Also, it's very notable how Lorde uses body parts a lot in her lyricism - sometimes even in a gory way - and seems especially "obsessed" with teeth. A lot of her songs, especially on this album but even on Melodrama, have several mentions of teeth: "Dreams of clean teeth" (400 Lux), "I cut my teeth on wedding rings" and "gold teeth" (Royals), "A hundred jewels between teeth" (Team), White Teeth Teens the entire song, "Well those great whites/rumours, they have big teeth" (Green Light), "I'm closing my teeth around this liquor-wet lime" (Sober) 400 Lux is probably my favourite track, I love the semi random orange juice line and especially love how the title is both a reference to light, sunsets and sunrises, and a reference to the luxurious lives of celebrities and the ruling class etc. that the whole album is about. It's all just so clever.
I think this is going to be a big comment, so... Sorry for that already hahaha And english isn't my first language, so there might be a few mistakes. Anyway, Fern, have you ever considered reacting to artist that don't sing in english? I don't recall seeing such thing in your channel. I'm asking you this because I'd love to see your reaction on a Brazilian artist named Duda Beat and her album "Te Amo Lá Fora", but it's in Portuguese. I would happily translate the lyrics and send you if you wanted to react to it, cause I really like your reactions. I don't know if you're going to like it (I think you will thogh), but I definitely believe it's going to be a very different experience for you. Anyways, even if you won't react to it (😭😭😭), I think It wouldn't be a waste of time for you to listen to it by your own. I know you probably don't have a lot of Brazilians subscribers, but it could be an opportunity to have their attention (we click and watch basically any video there's brazilian stuff, specially if our flag is on the tumbnail).
