This will save you tons of sanding and solve other problems. CA glue goes everywhere, soaks into grain and seals the wood against finishes.Epoxy won't spread but also seals the grain. Shoot. couple of coats of shellac on the wood before you begin working with the inlay and let it dry before you begin the inlay. Shellac is compatible with all other finishes.
The nice thing about Mother of Pearl is that it is so soft and easy to crush if needed. Yes, the Mother of Pearl Treeline carries is quite granular and easy to work into cracks and voids. Depending on your project, you could either crush up the flaked MOP you already have or you could get some of our crushed MOP. You are welcome to give us a call and we could offer more specific advice based on your projects. 1.800.598.2743
Toxic? Or an irritant like silica and asbestos? I can't find anything about it being toxic; it's apparently used in keys and cases for musical instruments, and even eating utensils, so it doesn't seem like it could be toxic. Not being pedantic; just want to know what I'm dealing with.
Hello! There are probably several tools that can be used to do inlay, but the NSK Presto is one of the best. Here is a link. treelineusa.com/power-carving/pneumatic-carvers/
It should work as long as the adhesive will stick to the stone you are working with. Usually an epoxy might work better with stones. Just mix the mother of pearl with some epoxy and spatula it into the grooves. When it dries you can sand off the excess.
I am using a piece of pine and carved out a small design in it.... i want to stain the pine a dark brown color, but i would like the inlay to be this crushed stone..... Would i add the crushed stone inlay first, then sand, then add my brown stain? How does wood stain interact with the crushed powder? Would it dark it? Also, i imagine polyurethaning over the entire piece isn't a problem right?
Hello. Great questions. The very best way to be sure is to experiment a little on a scrap piece of wood. This way you can make sure nothing gets messed up. I would add you pre-stain first as this will create somewhat of a barrier on the surface of the wood so the glue does not absorb into an area that will be stained. Once the glue is cured it is just like plastic. As long as you don't have any pits in the inlay area the stain should not absorb into the stone. A polyurethane finish over the top should also work just fine. Experiment first!!
Hi there I need some help, I’m making a wedding card box for my daughter , Iv burnt the wood and carved a rose on the top Iv used mother of pear to inlay it, But when I come to sanding it back level it goes brown because of the burnt wood, Any ideas how I can get around this, Thanks
Good question. Yes. The crushed pieces are still large enough for the iridescence to come through while still being able to fit into many cracks and voids.
I’ve tried 3 inlays with the mother of pearl I got from you guys. I’m using walnut and the problem I’m having is brown spots on the inlay after sanding it down. Almost looks like sawdust trapped in there. Any suggestions on how to remedy this would be greatly appreciated.
Great comment! Sometimes there can be some pitting or small bubbles in the inlay. They are exposed after you start sanding. You can use compressed air to blow out the dust and use more of the thin CA glue to fill in the voids or you can use a thicker CA glue to act as a sealer coat. Feel free to give us a call and we might be able to get some pictures of your projects to give you more specific feedback.
We usually copy our pattern onto Stencil Film and then stick it onto the surface. The Stencil Film allows you to carve right through it. Here is a link. treelineusa.com/self-adhesive-stencil-film-pkg-of-10-sheets/
Which brand epoxy do you recomend in reference to curve object using turquoise crush stone. Is there a Ca glue part thin and thick medium velocity so to speak.Need glue that will soak into the stone but yet not spread all over the place or run around the wood piece. Thanks.
Great questions. We really like the System 3 epoxy if you wanted to mix the crushed material into a paste. We have it in both a 5 minute and an overnight cure. Here is a link treelineusa.com/shop-supplies/adhesives-and-epoxy-putty/ That link will also show you some other CA glues like the Super T that has a medium viscosity and the Special T that has a really thick viscosity. It will not run as much, but they will not soak through the material as well as the Original or Thin CA glue. I hope that helps. Feel free to give us a call if you need specific recommendations.
I would like to add mother of pearl to an already finished wood box that has been carved. Is it possible to just dab the powder and glue in so as to not have to sand it down? Is this a REALLY bad idea?
Great question! I would certainly recommend you test it out on a scrap piece of wood to make sure you like the results. Generally people have like the looks of the sanded mother of pearl because I think it helps it to shine a little better. If you were planning on not sanding you would need to be extra careful not to let the glue spill out side your area (maybe use painters tape). Send pictures when you can!
CA glue stands for Cyanoacrylate glue. Some people call it super glue or crazy glue. If you have a home improvement store or hardware store in your area the is a good chance you will find some there. Ideally, you will want to use a type of CA glue that is really runny (like water) so it will soak into your inlay materials. I hope this helps.
Thanks Marty. Here is a link to the short video showing how we cut out the flower. The video is little product focused but I think you will get a good idea on one way to carve these flowers. th-cam.com/video/n7AYGhLLesc/w-d-xo.html
Awesome stuff my question is about your sander is it just foam pipe insulation or is it a mandrel and covers. I could really use one. Thanks for the video and the place to get supplies
Hey Robert! We used what is called a Flexible Drum Sander. It is a mandrel that attaches to a motor and than has foam sleeves with different grits of sandpaper. Here is a link if you wanted to learn more about it. www.treelineusa.com/sanding/flex-drum-sander
Hey Chris. Thank you for your comment and questions. I got the pattern from the Nature Stencil Design book. Here is a link. www.treelineusa.com/nature-stencil-designs.html
I just placed my order for your 1oz crushed mother of pearl. Thank you for the video, low price, and very reasonable shipping cost! ❤

Really really ART OF INLAY !!!!!!! thanks Master !!!!!!!
I think vibrating the shell into place would give a more controlled uniform appearance and minimize touch up.
That and not using an image with such fine points....
Lovely! A very helpful presentation! Thanks!
Nice. First look for me on a boat project, where I want a few different inlays. Love the filter fan box also!
It will also make it so it's not clear. The baking soda will make the glue opaque and u wont see that MOP
I have Mother of pearl but it's in a flake form?? I noticed what you have is different and probably easier to work. Suggestions please, Phil

Any idea on staining the wood before or after the inlay process? Any insight would be highly appreciated 🙏
Usually applying the stain first is better. Sometimes if your glue spills onto the wood, the stain will not soak into those areas.
@@treelineusa thank you so much for the insight !
Could this mother of pearl be added to other inlay fillers
Yes! You could also use dyes to tint the mother of pearl.
Be aware that MOP dust is toxic! DO not breathe in and use a mask if working with sanding it. The same goes for Bone.

It’s not toxic. It’s a mechanical irritant. Stop spreading false info the internet has enough of this already.
Is there a tool to cut the wood to make the inlay
Hello! There are probably several tools that can be used to do inlay, but the NSK Presto is one of the best. Here is a link. treelineusa.com/power-carving/pneumatic-carvers/
thank you for the tips,, i have a question will this also work on flat stone carvings as it seems to on wood?

awesome... thank you very much. You answered all my questions.
What size bag of pearl is that? I'm not sure what quantity to buy and need an example.
The bag we show in this video is a one ounce package.
Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) put on top of the CA glue will harden it instantly.
But he is filling with crushed pearl, not baking soda. Baking soda and ca glue is an old luthier trick to fix or repair a guitar nut.

Hi Paul. Please give us a call when you can, and we could probably help you out better over the phone. 1.800.598.2743
Do you think using a vibration or ultrasonic table would help those particals settle into the compartments more easily?
The material seems to settle pretty well by hand, but yes, I am sure vibrating the project would work as well.
Wow,beautiful
Why crushed? It looks like any other white sand or pigment. Does the iridescence come through?
Good question. Yes. The crushed pieces are still large enough for the iridescence to come through while still being able to fit into many cracks and voids.

hi thanks for the video
what kind of wood i can used thanks
Really any kind of wood can be used. With the Mother of Pearl you may want to uses something a little darker so it stands out better.
I live in Brazil and don't have access to the materials you point out in this work. What exactly is this CA glue? Is it similar to "Super Bond"?
CA glue stands for Cyanoacrylate glue. Some people call it super glue or crazy glue. If you have a home improvement store or hardware store in your area the is a good chance you will find some there. Ideally, you will want to use a type of CA glue that is really runny (like water) so it will soak into your inlay materials. I hope this helps.
Ca glue is superglue
