Gotta love the Dutch. They all seem to be Supremely confident and usually pretty arrogant but he’s just being realistic about how good he was. Not a united fan but Stam was a big part of one of the greatest teams in history and the way he can tell the story in a second language is mind blowing. I’m just really impressed with him as a man and a human being after this.

I remember watching him play for Netherlands during the 98 World Cup when in one of the games he got a nasty cut above his eye, and as he was getting stitched up on the sidelines the camera was on his face and the commentator said something about how tough Jaap was that he never made a painful grimace or flinched. What a guy!
Gutted when he left and even Alex said looking back it was one of the decisions he was too hasty with and he let Jaap go too soon. Certainly one of the truly great centre backs we've had.

Too bad you were too young when he was at the club. I can understand that you prefer Vidic, though. That defence with Ferdinand, Vidic, G. Nevill and Pat Evra, and van der Sar in goal was the definition of a fortress in football. Manchester United won the Champions League in 2008 because of their defence. The semi-final against Barcelona (0-0 and 1-0) was a defensive masterclass.

He was exactly the kind of no nonsense centre half that United needed at that time. I believe that the best centre half pairings have a ball winner/tackler tough guy along with a ball playing more creative partner. Bruce/Pallister, Vidic/Rio, Ehiogu/Southgate, Terry/ Desailly, etc He would have been the ideal partner to Rio Ferdinand. Sad he was sold when he was. Vidic was brilliant but imo he was not quite as good as Jaap although he was still a magnificent player!! Yip Jaap Stam :- For me deserves the title... United legend!!!

Mas A Bailly has the qualities to be a world class CB, but he gets injured too much. Where as Lindelof he’s actually been a consistent CB who’s been picked more often and been playing very well.

I've always loved the way Scandinavian players learn English in the accent of the area of the club they signed for. Schmeichel always had a soft Manc accent and you can hear it in Jaap. And you listen to some of the Danish, Swedish players who joined Liverpool it's even more pronounced.
Is the very best defender we ever had. I remember feeling gutted at the time whilst my brother in law who is a Liverpool fan was over the moon at he's departure. Stam did not deserve this treatment.
Great interview to a really humble and decent man! He might have looked tough and mean on the park and you admired the way he played the game, but watching him here, what a good man he is! I hope he finds success in his future football plans. United make hard decisions but they wronged Jaap Stam and Roy Keane. The trouble is these big clubs are two faced about their players and they can be left out in the cold at any time.
LFC fan here, and I'm big admirer of Staam. A classy player, not the quickest, but extremely safe, great tackler, good engine, calculating, nice touch, great pass, and he had excellent vision. He was usually two steps ahead of his opponents. This helped out United, as their other backs could be caught out of position up the pitch if an attack from the back went pear shaped. One of the best defenders ever in the Premier League, and if a United supporter calls him the best, then they certainly have a right to say so.
Biggest mistake selling him. Larry White was a woefully inferior replacement. Stam went on to have nearly a decade more at the highest level in the game. A mistake is actually an understatement and the way it was handled is a disgrace. Shameful chapter.
Not a United fan and from the outside, I see United fans raving about this guy and Vidic. In my opinion, Vidic was just part of an outstanding side whereas Stam was a big reason why the team he played in was so great.Different gravy to Vidic for me as can't forget how Torres use to haunt him each time they played.

I think you're underestimating Vidic but Jaap was definitely top 3 if not on par with Vidic. That's my opinion at least.

@@tris421 Rio suspension made United fall apart like 85-86. For me 01-02 was a good chance until Beckham metatarsel and Neville's foot. That was a champions league semi final where the team needed a fit Beckham and would have probably won.
He was exactly the kind of no nonsense centre half that United needed at that time. I believe that the best centre half pairings have a ball winner/tackler tough guy along with a ball playing more creative partner.
Bruce/Pallister, Vidic/Rio, Ehiogu/Southgate, Terry/ Desailly, etc
He would have been the ideal partner to Rio Ferdinand. Sad he was sold when he was. Vidic was brilliant but imo he was not quite as good as Jaap although he was still a magnificent player!!

One of my favorite united players of all time. Dutch players do amazingly good with united, Van der Sar, Ruud, Jaap, even Danny Blind wasnt bad at all, under another manager he'd been a success, Im sure

Remeber being at the airport when i was a kid in my stam shirt after being on holiday and some bloke tapped me on the shoulder and said I bet you're gutted he's gone. Didnt have a clue hed left amd it was a massive shock. He left so quick but had a massive impact on the club. Brilliant CB and has still got it, as seen at OT legends game recently

Mas A Bailly has the qualities to be a world class CB, but he gets injured too much. Where as Lindelof he’s actually been a consistent CB who’s been picked more often and been playing very well.

I've always loved the way Scandinavian players learn English in the accent of the area of the club they signed for. Schmeichel always had a soft Manc accent and you can hear it in Jaap. And you listen to some of the Danish, Swedish players who joined Liverpool it's even more pronounced.

Is the very best defender we ever had. I remember feeling gutted at the time whilst my brother in law who is a Liverpool fan was over the moon at he's departure. Stam did not deserve this treatment.

Nobody could intimidate Jaap Stam, the epitome of steel at that backline. A sensational defender during his days.
Great interview to a really humble and decent man! He might have looked tough and mean on the park and you admired the way he played the game, but watching him here, what a good man he is! I hope he finds success in his future football plans. United make hard decisions but they wronged Jaap Stam and Roy Keane. The trouble is these big clubs are two faced about their players and they can be left out in the cold at any time.
LFC fan here, and I'm big admirer of Staam. A classy player, not the quickest, but extremely safe, great tackler, good engine, calculating, nice touch, great pass, and he had excellent vision. He was usually two steps ahead of his opponents. This helped out United, as their other backs could be caught out of position up the pitch if an attack from the back went pear shaped. One of the best defenders ever in the Premier League, and if a United supporter calls him the best, then they certainly have a right to say so.
Not the quickest? Stam was so quick he barely needed to tackle.
Yeah, Stam was fast and strong.
Biggest mistake selling him. Larry White was a woefully inferior replacement. Stam went on to have nearly a decade more at the highest level in the game. A mistake is actually an understatement and the way it was handled is a disgrace. Shameful chapter.

Not a United fan and from the outside, I see United fans raving about this guy and Vidic. In my opinion, Vidic was just part of an outstanding side whereas Stam was a big reason why the team he played in was so great.Different gravy to Vidic for me as can't forget how Torres use to haunt him each time they played.
