- Liturgy...every church has one. A good one will include some basic elements: A call to worship, God's greeting to his people, a prayer of adoration, a confession of the faith, a prayer of confession of sin and the preaching of the word of God. One element that has almost vanished is the pastoral prayer. So, if it;s been a while since you participated, here is one to remind you of what it's like. This is Pastor Jason Petterson of Valley Presbyterian Church in North Hills, CA.

I loved this pastoral prayer because it was offered to God with an attitude of humility, worship and reverence - characteristics that are sorely lacking in most churches today.
When we make worship about us and not God, it becomes something else completely. Thank you and may God bless you and your ministry. 🌻

One of the things that hit me during my first "pastoral prayer" was hearing our pastor pray for people in the congregation directly. To hear him pray for someone on my pew honestly hit me. Thanks for this BT3
That was most lovely. It's nice to have a church family willing to petition the Lord on our behalf, especially when we're in the depths of despair and don't know how (or what) to ask.
Imagine that a pastor actually praying for the flock...I love it.
But has the church come to realize that Good Friday was not the day of his crucifiction [and it is on the wrong side of the Passover]. Mark 15;42 is not really pointing to Friday as the crucifiction day! When you do diligent study you find that Good Friday was a high holy day [a Sabbath] declared by GOD, and celebrated fifteen hundred years B. C. [throughout all your generations] A day of celebration, and great joy [can`t execute on that day] Do you know what great work GOD did on that day?
I LOVE the pastoral prayer time in our service!
The thing that aggravates me the most, and it even happens in the best churches, is members of the band, or people in general, wandering around on stage when the prayer is being given. We are supposed to be of one mind and in one accord.
Thank you for sharing this shepherd's heartfelt worship and petition. His faith, devotion , reliance on God and empathy are crystal clear..May he remain so unswervingly faithful and inspire such from you fellow congregants. This was indeed a blessing.

Oh, my! What I wouldn't give to be a part of such a church - true, sincere, godly prayer & sound preaching, rooted and grounded in Christ and in scripture, conducted with reverence and sincerity - Brian, you are so blessed! Such churches are rare as hens teeth these days. There truly is a global decline and it's impact is being felt, right across the land. Please pray I find I find such a fellowship.🙏😥

I would suggest that you check out some churches in your area that are still grounded in a Protestant Reformation understanding of word and sacrament, such as Lutheran, Presbyterian, or Anglican. The Lutheran church of which I am a member includes a prayer similar to this as part of the liturgy, and we don't have a "worship team." When you look at the front of the church you see an altar, not a drum set.
@@sarco64 Alas, the Lutheran church has no presence here in Scotland and Presbyterian, Baptist, etc are no different from any of the other non-dom churches that proliferate. Likewise Anglican (Episcopalian here in Scotland) are lead almost exclusively by gay clerics (and lesbian nuns who are married - to each other!😱). The only 'Reformed' church, St George's Tron (home church of Eric Alexander and Sinclair Ferguson) splintered after parting company with the CofS over the issue of gay marriage and openly gay ministers). Not a lot of choice I'm afraid.😢

That was such a great pastoral prayer. Recently I have found myself watching Dr. Peter Masters of London Metropolitan Tabernacle (Spurgeon‘s church). His pastoral prayers are a minimum of 10 minutes long and are so theologically deep, rich and loving. The most God glorifying and Christ honoring prayers I’ve ever heard. I would encourage all of you to watch his prayers if not the whole service.

Matthew 6:6

It is discouraged to pray in public, again listen to Christ.

It is good for us to pray in private as you quoted above but it is also necessary for us to pray when we gather as believers for service. In Acts 1:14, it says, "these all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brothers".
Also in Acts 2:42, it said "they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer"
The scripture encourages us to pray when we assemble together as brothers and sisters in the Lord. Most important, we must also break bread in remembrance of Christ and the work he has done for us. You can read further in Acts 4:23-31, Acts 12:12, Acts 20:36, Acts 21:5 and James 5:14
