Their nose will get them in trouble constantly, but have the softest face and ears. Everything about the Beagle is great and I always recommend them to anyone.

Beagles are such a great breed. I’ve had three in my lifetime and each one was great. They are such smart, funny, playful, and sweet dogs. But you have to keep an eye on their ears bc they are prone to getting ear infections and it smells bad.

They were brought back to the UK during the Crusades and were highly prized as hunting dogs. Beagles were originally used to find rabbits and other small game, hence the excellent sense of smell! Beagles are very friendly dogs, but once on a scent they become single minded and will not give up! Beagles need a strong leader and good sense of belonging to a family or "pack". They are very cute, but don't let that fool you. They can be all about business when hunting!
Just got a 3 month old couple weeks ago & this being my first dog.. man he is a handfull but I've been around alot of dogs & he by far is for far the sweetest & seems real loyal & attached to me very quickly.. he has hes up & downs.. one day he will doing really good like stay calm and quiet.. hold his pee & poop next day its total opposite & he dont listen but I'm willing to take my time to train him well to be the best family dog he could be i mean hes only 14 weeks old.. he's not doing bad for his age.. his name is Benji btw I love that little guy
I liked the “somewhat independent character “, another way of saying obedience is not a strong point. Every other dog I’ve had I’ve been able to walk most places without a leash, but not any of my 3 Beagles. One, my 2 yr. old, is good until she smells or sees a rabbit, squirrel, seagull, etc. and then she is off.
My beagle mix is great until he smells or sees a raccoon, squirrel, deer, bear, coyote, skunk, dog, cat, chipmunk, rabbitt, bird, or any other animal for that matter. He definitely knows the words bunny and birdie and will sprint around the backyard if I say those words just looking for one. Love that boy though, thats how we get him to exercise at this point ie “get the birdies” *zoom*
Tough losing a beloved dog, I think most who watch these videos have felt that pain. My 'favorite' is my golden retriever. I am looking to add another dog to the family and a beagle will probably be my choice. I hope you get another beagle soon and start making more memories with your new puppy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine. I bet they were the best. May I ask what was the secret, besides love, that gave 'em such a long lifespan? I don't expect more than 14 with mine(?), but would do anything for more time.
Over the last 15 years, I had 3 Basset Hounds......as the years went on I had to have one put down because of a spinal injury that wouldn't heal, and most recently two died of cancer. One died in front of me when I got home from work, and the other one two weeks ago.....she had a tumour in her spleen, and when they opened her up, there were three that looked like one from the ultrasound......they kept her under while I rushed to the Vet and had her placed in my lap while they euthanized her.....So......yeah, I was very sad, and still am sad. I never let a dog of mine be euthanized without me holding them. She was my 9th dog I had the honour of having in my life. I've had all kinds of dogs, but learning to be a Basset dad was very challenging.....but I did it, rather well I might add. Basset Hounds are very hard headed, very smart, very strong, and also require exercise. My cousin suggested getting a few Beagles.........although my heart isn't quite ready yet......and I prefer to adopt, these Beagles he's suggesting are rescues. So.....I dunno......seems like Beagles and Bassets have a lot in common. Anyone have a suggestion on that?

They're very socially adeptand love to play, so they can come off as intimidating if you're afraid of dogs, but if they haven't been abused or trained to be aggressive, they wont hurt you on purpose. They might sorta nibble/bite you playfully, for instance, but not enough to hurt you

It is treatable with steroids and cyclosporine and Abby is fine now. It is variously called Beagle Pain Syndrome or SRMA, steroid responsive meningitis arteritis. Our first vet didn't suspect it so keep yourself aware of it.

I do not agree with the characterization as "impulsive". This is not true or correct. The Beagle is a sniffer dog. The Beagle is the second best scenting dog in the world, second only to the Blood Hound, (Blooded Hound). Once on a scent, the Beagle will follow it. Because Beagles can smell more than 10k times better than humans, this makes some believe that their behavior is impulsive, but this not the case! A beagle's sense of smell is so good they can smell a single ant under a couch! They are good with children and very fun loving! But they are barkers, so if a dog barking bothers you, then don't get a Beagle or a Beagle mix.
You may have done some research on the AKC.org site which claims that the sniffer dogs go in this order: Blood Hound, Basset Hound, Beagle. But field trials for finding objects have proved this wrong! In field trials, the order goes like this this: Blood Hound, Beagle, Pointer, then Basset! Both Bloodhounds, and bassets are fairly new breeds compared to Beagles!

My reply to you was that you must have done some research on AKC.org, which does list the Basset hound as an excellent sniffer dog. But this does not mean the Basset is better than the Beagle. Think the major worry is their hunting instinct: ours 'gave tongue' quite often on walks as their DNA means they especially are hunt hares, which run in big circles, so the dogs should eventually return, and deer - which DON'T !!
Yup, once off the lead periodically call them back, praise them when they return without putting the leash on them, once done praising let them go back to sniffing and wandering. It reinforces that being called is not a punishment. Also patience and trust
