Top 10 at least...probably top 5 for me. That being said he had anthony green in sounds of animals fighting already so maybe he wanted to keep the list clean that way
Thursday became my favorite band in High school, after seeing them when I was 16 in 2001. Just went to the Full Collapse 21st anniversary show, they are still killing it. ...Great list.
Excellent list, I have almost all of these albums. Here's some more post hardcore masterpieces: For your Special sweetheart by Jawbox, Plays Pretty for Baby by The Nation of Ulysses, Manic Compression by Quicksand, Analphabetapolothology by Cap n Jazz, Good Health by Pretty Girls Makes Graves, Experiments in Expectation by Kill Sadie, Wiretap Scars by Sparta. You definitely covered the best and most important records of the genre. Good job!
My go to post-hardcore albums: Ideas Above Our Station by Hundred Reasons Domestica by Cursive Water and Solutions by Far In/Casino/Out by ATD-i Neon Handshake by Hell is For Heroes Cave Bear is Flying Panda by Kids Near Water Also heard some argue that Mclusky Do Dallas by Mclusky is post hardcore. Not sure myself but great album either way.
If you're a fan of DGD singer from that record, he did an amazing posthardcore band back in the early Aughts called Five Minute Ride. They were something else. I went to almost every local show when they were active.
Was doing a trip down memory lane in this genre and came upon your video. You nailed it. Fear before the March of flames always open mouth is still one of my favorites
That Fugazi record is one of my favorites,, and the band must be one of the last concerts I saw in the Norwegian punk rock scene 1990 before moving to Sweden🤘
Thanks for that massive walk down the memory lane. I have most of these records in my old case of CDs somewhere in storage - and I actually have that girthy Manipulator vinyl as well. Thursday and Glassjaw was my jam back then. … I’m gonna put on some Fear Before and just vibe boys and girls! 😂
Awesome video dude! There's definitely some overlap in our top 10, but here's mine not in order: - At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command (probably my favorite album of all time, I had to name my band after one of the songs lol) - Glassjaw - Worship And Tribute - The Blood Brothers - ...Burn, Piano Island, Burn - Fugazi - End Hits - Foxy Shazam - The Flamingo Trigger - Shudder To Think - Pony Express Record - Don Caballero - Don Caballero 2 - Slint - Spiderland - Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime - Bear Vs. Shark - Terrorhawk and since I can't narrow this down, I'll say these are my very honorable mentions: - Fear Before - The Always Open Mouth - Clikatat Ikatowi - Orchestrated And Conducted By - Frodus - And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea - Thrice - Vheissu - Unwound - Challenge For A Civilized Society - Lowercase - The Going Away Present - Made Out Of Babies - Coward and tons more
stumbled upon this channel tonight. was fun being nostalgic. shocked to be included in the honorable mentions, didnt expect that. thanks for appreciating the deathstar album. my top 10 list is similar, with a few differences.
I’m flattered you found and enjoyed this (now very very old and slightly embarrassing) video. The stuff you did with DGD was peak for the band for me. Also enjoyed your set last year at kill iconic!
Relationship of command by at the drive in, the shape of punk to come by refused, black Sails in the Sunset by afi and hot damn! By everytime I die were the 4 albums that shaped my music loving life from '99 to '03 and still influence me today.
WOW ... YOUR TASTE AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT LITTLE KNOWN SUBGENRES, IT'S ADMIRABLE, THANKS FOR SHARING THESE BANDS !!! THURSDAY HAS BECOME NUMBER ONE IN MY PLAYLIST!
Thanks for this great collection of masterpieces and also for your smart guiding tour through the history of post hardcore, that works like a perfect time machine for me!!! ❤ In Refused’s tradition there was an awful band scene in scandinavia, especially JR EWING („Ride Paranoia“) with thier mind blowing energy and RUMBLE IN RHODOS („Intentions“), which I really danced to nights and nights away!!! I guess THRICE crossed a lot of subgenres connected to post hardcore and left their footprints and grew and grew more with nearly every album!!! I love this band for the long and unique journey they made through the genres in a kind of progressive way!!
Good sample of post-hardcore. You don't see a lot of post-hardcore in the VC, I'll have to check out some of these bands. I'm more partial to the earlier post-hardcore bands like Husker Du, Fugazi, Unwound and Nomeansno. My favorite post-hardcore album is Nomeansno's Wrong. If you're unfamiliar with Nomeansno, they're a little like Fugazi but a little more jazzier and humorous.
Love Husker Du, although I really prefer their earlier punk sound. I've heard of Nomeansno before, but I don't think I've ever given them a listen. I will correct that now!
Great collection! So cool that you showed a lil bit of the albums artworks. I’d throw in this list Alexisonfire’s Self-Titled álbum and Finch’s Say Hello to Sunshine, standing next to Glassjaw, Refused, ATDI, Circa Survive, Thursday, TSOAF.
htMichael- just found your site and very impressed with your knowledge of classical vinyl labels. You know more than probably 99% of the population, even those interested in classical. I’m sure your classical background in the oboe world has helped. I grew up in the fifties and sixties so Vinyl was always part of my world, though I took a detour for about 20 years when CDs made their appearance. I had quite a large collection and one day was invited to a friend’s house who played vinyl exclusively. That was it for me. I returned to vinyl with a vengeance, ended up with a Rega 25 table and Rogue Integrated tube amp. After some years I decided to get what I thought would be n infinitely better table, Acustic Raven One, much touted in the audiophile world. After a couple of years I decided there wasn’t that great a difference in sound between the two tables. I wasn’t even sure I liked the Raven more. I ended up selling it and buying a Rega RP 6, which I’m delighted with. I may eventuLly move up the Rega line but I’m waiting for the new P8 and 10 to come out. There’s a lot more to say but I just wanted to recommend a great disc to you. I know you said you had not heard any Urania lps. Cisco came out some years ago with a remastered Urania from 1959? With the Kansas City Orchestra. The sound is phenomenal, among the best I’ve heard and I have quite a classical collection including almost all of the Speakers Corner Deccas and Mercuries, Classic Records, ORG, and now from Acoustic Sounds. Also many originals. I supplied a link to Discogs, though not sure it’ll work. You can find it easy enough on Google. Good luck with school. Best, Eric Https://www.discogs.com/Kansas-City-Philharmonic-Prokofiev-Symphonic-Suite-Of-Waltzes-Gypsy-Fantasy-From-Stone-Flower-Ballet/release/4366414
10 more dope Post-Hardcore albums. As Cities Burn - Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest. Thrice - The Illusion of Safety. On the Might of Princes - Where You Are and Where You Want to Be. Fear Before the March of Flames - Odd How People Shake. Engine Down - To Bury Within the Sound. Encrypt Manuscript - Census. I Hate Myself - 10 Songs. A Static Lullaby - And Don't Forget to Breathe. Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety. Bear Vs. Shark - Right Now You're in the Best of Hands.
This is a phenomenal list. All of these albums are amazing. However, if it were my list I'd probably throw The Used's self-titled record in there as well as Finch's Say Hello to Sunshine. The way Bert McCracken could scream perfectly on pitch with The Used and the way Finch went kinda into a prog-post-hardcore direction on Say Hello to Sunshine just make those two albums standouts for me in the post-hardcore scene. For an honourable mention I would definitely have thrown in Everyone's Out to Get Me by Get Scared. It's more modern (it came out in like, 2012, 2013?) and kinda fits into that makeup-wearing, random breakdown scene of post-hardcore that's extremely looked down upon but Get Scared really are a diamond in the rough. There's a lot of shitty bands in that scene (Black Veil Brides, etc) but Get Scared really had a great sound and their first two albums (Everyone's Out to Get Me is their second one) were absolutely amazing. Also, I don't know if you would consider this band post-hardcore but I would also throw Box Car Racer's only album into an honourable mention slot.
thank you for this video I learned a lot a bout a different sound. Just a question: are bands as From first to last, Aiden, Silverstein, Alessana, Underoath, post hardcore or are they a different thing?
Good list dude. Why was it so hard for my YT search engine to find this video!!! Mostly agree with all these albums. IMO i love Glassjaw tho I see them more on the metal edge and nu metal side of things but yeah some p-hc elements in that album and great blast beats . Easily Thursday is my number one on this list.
The Sound of Animals Fighting is such a good band! Also, I feel like 80% of Glassjaw's discog defined post-hardcore. FUCK YEAH MANIPULTOR RULES!!!!!!!! I listened to manipulator more than any other album by them, I still don't regret it. Hell, I still listen to it now. Fear Before the March of Flames is so good, especially The Always Open Mouth, and Drowning the Old Hag has to be my favorite song from them. Awesome picks, would have picked maybe 1 or 2 things different but still amazing.
This is second video of yours that I have watched and first time commenting. I've always been leary of the term Post Hardcore but I hated the Post Punk tag. For the most part I considered it all Punk. When Punk started all the bands didn't sound the same. Now people consider the Sex Pistols and The Ramones to be the definitive Punk sound. People now say Patti Smith is not Punk. Television is not Punk but Progressive. Wire is not Punk but Post Punk. They are Punk. I enjoyed the needle drops. The only band I'm familiar with is Fugazi. I consider Fugazi Hardcore. I can hear the difference between these bands and Hardcore but I don't think I'll start using the term Post Hardcore. Enjoyed the video and subscribed. I'll check out some of your other videos as time permits.
I think your right about the term post hardcore. When I was young I would disregard it as punk and people would say "punk is dead" but now that I am older It is a very misleading term. Punk was never and isn't dead, it just evolved.
As a 40 something that loved and breathed this music in the 90’s I’m very surprised by some of the selections or omissions of much more important ones . No Shudder to think, Jawbox, Drive like Jehu, Slint , Hoover, Nation of Ulysses, etc etc . Kinda crazy as these bands and many more were way more influential and representative of the “ scene” then MTV guys like Thursday.
Drive Like Jehu snuck in at the end. In fact, I own and enjoy records by all the groups you just named, I just happened to show my personal favorites. This wasn't a list of influential records, just a list of my favorite 10 post hardcore records.
my pick 10 for pxhc Unwound - New Plastic Ideas/LTIY Lync - These Are Not Fall Colors Big Black - Atomizer Black Eyes - Self Titled Lowercase - Kill the Lights Indian Summer - Science 1994 Slint - Spiderland Twelve Hour Turn - Victory of Flight Fugazi - Red Medicine Husker Du - Zen Arcade that fear before the march of flames album is great. if you haven’t checked out unwound, you should get on it. imo they were the best to ever do it. ive got a few albums you mentioned in this vid in my backlog
nice list unwound, lync, lowercase - classic emo/phc bands also Indian Summer - emo/hardcore punk/screamo, Slint is rather post-rock/math rock, i don't think we can identify them as phc
Loving the gimmie 10 videos. Actually didn’t know a lot of these were pressed on vinyl. Just wanted to ask your opinion on Alesana. On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax is the album that really got me into music like this and just wanted to know where you would place them genre wise and if you’d consider them post hardcore. Thanks!
Tbh not a huge fan of Alesana, I do think Apology is a great song, but the vast majority of their catalog just doesn't do it for me. Objectively they could be considered post hardcore, but "scene" and "pop" are also labels I would tend to apply to them. They're not really full on "mall-core", but they sort of pointed in that direction which would lead to some cringey bands down the road. This is all just my opinion, but for that specific style of post-harcore, I would rather listen to Silverstein.
poetryonplastic fully understandable. I love Silverstein also, and some of Alesanas stuff such as like This Conversation Is Over or The Last Three Letters could point towards the “mall-core” direction. But the way I found that album is kind of funny in retrospect because I was a kid that didn’t really have my own music taste, just listened to what my dad listened to. And I had heard people reference “screamo” so I googled the word screamo and Apology came up. Funny now looking back and finding actual screamo. Nonetheless, love the channel. Keep it up my dude.
Why does nobody ever mention Alexisonfire when talking about post-hardcore. Maybe they aren't as big outside Canada but holy shit they more than belong here.
Absolutely! Definitely more popular among my Canadian friends, so I contend with that. Don’t really hear much about them down south in the US, at least, sadly
Thanks for putting this together. It is like a nice short documentary. I am totally ignorant of post-hardcore, but I am always trying to discover new things, whether it be classical or hardcore, or harcore classical :-) Oh by the way, fuck youtube.
Dude this is an epic list tho i would probably swap tiger and the duke for the ocean and the sun but thats just personal preference really. And yeah manipulator is their best album..Fuck my childhood was awesome haha. Also seeing that enter shikari clip...you just know there were some hot af scene chicks there...ah man having an old fart glory days moment..gross haha
Great collection of music here Though i feel full collapse was a poorly mixed album with amazing songs, needed more bass in the mix. War all the time had the levels mixed a lot better
I think I have all the albums by all these bands except blood brothers and tiger and the duke one. Gives me something to look into so thank you, Australia was kinda hard to find new music, especially what didn’t make it to here
definitely not post-hardcore. I would personally put them under hard rock, as they have a similar sound to other hard rock bands of the late 90s early 2000s (like Tool/A Perfect Circle, Trapt, Earshot, etc).
Isn't post-hardcore and Emo practically the same thing? I've always heard that emo (emotive hardcore) was born out of post-hardcore in the mid 80's as a subgenre of post-hardcore. Even screamo bands like Saetia and Pg.99 have also been described as post-hardcore. So i'm trying to find the distinction here... I have yet to find a post-hardcore band that HASN'T been labeled as emo, or screamo. What I've learned is... screamo is a subgenre of emo, emo is a subgenre of post-hardcore, and post-hardcore is a subgenre of hardcore punk. Although it seems like all three of those genres are in the same category. Is there really even a real distinction between post-hardcore and emo? Because i literally hear both terms used to describe bands of that style.
There is sometimes a little overlap, but in general no, they are completely different. Thursday are the only band on this list that could be considered an Emo band. try checking out isthisbandemo.com
As poetry said, there is very often overlap. the way i see it, all subsequent sub genres of hardcore punk are technically post-hardcore (post hardcore = after hardcore, what became of the sound)so even screamo/emo stuff like Spirit of Versailles is kinda PHC. also the way I see it- there are 3 main areas of post hardcore, the 90's stuff, the 00's stuff, and the new watered down stuff that people are calling PHC now. (sleeping with sirens, pierce the veil, etc.)((as much as I really don't want to count it.))
Noise rock bands like big black, naked raygun, The jesus lizard, Girls against Boys, Jawbox, Tar were also post hardcore, so post hardcore is a different genre to emo.
You're completely missing the point of the "Post-Hardcore" label. Refused were a hardcore band in the present tense. No one would have ever dreamed of calling their Victory Records releases "Post-Hardcore" and aside from a few samples and sound bites the style on "Shape of" is a fluid continuation of the "Everlasting" EP. This is frankly insulting! If you look at the LATER Fugazi albums you can begin to grasp how the term originated... as the music became more abstract and harder to classify as "Punk." "Repeater" while great is NOT a "Post-Hardcore" album. "Post-hardcore" was a tongue-in-cheek way to give credit to experimental and mellow indie/emo bands who came from the hardcore scene. Please stop calling modern hardcore bands from the 1990s, 2000s, or whenever "Post-Hardcore". It isn't the same thing!!!
Saosin - Translating the Name is the best post hardcore EP/album ever
Top 10 at least...probably top 5 for me. That being said he had anthony green in sounds of animals fighting already so maybe he wanted to keep the list clean that way
Thursday became my favorite band in High school, after seeing them when I was 16 in 2001. Just went to the Full Collapse 21st anniversary show, they are still killing it. ...Great list.
I remember playing the basement where Refused had their last show. Amazing experience, truly humbling.
In Virginia?
WORSHIP AND TRIBUTE.
Got pink roses tatted on my arm. Such a meaningful track.
Worship and Tribute was a letdown. Didn't have the nu-metal influences of there previous release.
Good list. Been getting back into these vibes lately. Alexisonfire, Boysetsfire and touche amore would definitely be in my list though
Good job!
kill sadie is too underrated. also love all yor picks! 90's phc is too underrated
Cap N Jazz is more on the midwestern emo side of things. Also great list!
@@grillah1252 yeah, no way it's post hardcore, but still amazing nonetheless
Not even a mention of These Arms Are Snakes here :|
My go to post-hardcore albums:
Ideas Above Our Station by Hundred Reasons
Domestica by Cursive
Water and Solutions by Far
In/Casino/Out by ATD-i
Neon Handshake by Hell is For Heroes
Cave Bear is Flying Panda by Kids Near Water
Also heard some argue that Mclusky Do Dallas by Mclusky is post hardcore. Not sure myself but great album either way.
Hey wait a minute... I recognize that profile picture
Ah man that's a great one
Rites of Spring being UNIRONICALLY referenced as the beginning of a genre era! Never thought I'd see the day.
I got the chills when you pulled out the always open mouth. Hell yeah.
Great video my friend, love all these records, slowly buying them for my vinyl collection.
That Fugazi record is one of my favorites,, and the band must be one of the last concerts I saw in the Norwegian punk rock scene 1990 before moving to Sweden🤘

Awesome video dude! There's definitely some overlap in our top 10, but here's mine not in order:

- Glassjaw - Worship And Tribute
- The Blood Brothers - ...Burn, Piano Island, Burn
- Fugazi - End Hits
- Foxy Shazam - The Flamingo Trigger
- Shudder To Think - Pony Express Record
- Don Caballero - Don Caballero 2
- Slint - Spiderland
- Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
- Bear Vs. Shark - Terrorhawk
and since I can't narrow this down, I'll say these are my very honorable mentions:
- Fear Before - The Always Open Mouth
- Clikatat Ikatowi - Orchestrated And Conducted By
- Frodus - And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea
- Thrice - Vheissu
- Unwound - Challenge For A Civilized Society
- Lowercase - The Going Away Present
- Made Out Of Babies - Coward
and tons more
And We Washed Our Weapons in The Sea is god tier. So underrated.

Wow, not being familiar with this type of music, I'm really enjoying your recommendations. Thanks for sharing!

Wrong is a completely forgotten masterpiece. Probably the ultimate post-hardcore album from the 80's.
Dope list. I’d have a lot of overlap La Dispute -Wildlife, A Lot Like Birds-No Place, and mewithoutYou-Brother, Sister would be in my 10 any time.
Great vid!! Glassjaw and ATDI's music was the soundtrack to high school for me

FRODUS and we washed our weapons in the sea
Take To The Skies was the first hardcore CD I owned! It was a gift from my sister for my 12th birthday (back in 2006 haha)
Refused was super underappreciated.
Stupidly underappreiciated
Why doesn’t anybody mention thrice? They came out at the same time as Thursday and are still making amazing records.
SO many good picks.

translating the name EP from Saosin?
this is the best post hardcore ep ever and no mention
Buena lista, pasaste por todas las bandas importantes y de todos los estilos.
Actually met the boys of TFoT. Great musicians and artists. Doppelganger is still the G.O.A.T.
This is second video of yours that I have watched and first time commenting. I've always been leary of the term Post Hardcore but I hated the Post Punk tag. you're sounding pretty elitist dude
my pick 10 for pxhc
Unwound - New Plastic Ideas/LTIY
Lync - These Are Not Fall Colors
Big Black - Atomizer
Black Eyes - Self Titled
Lowercase - Kill the Lights
Indian Summer - Science 1994
Slint - Spiderland
Twelve Hour Turn - Victory of Flight
Fugazi - Red Medicine
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
that fear before the march of flames album is great. if you haven’t checked out unwound, you should get on it. imo they were the best to ever do it. ive got a few albums you mentioned in this vid in my backlog
nice list
unwound, lync, lowercase - classic emo/phc bands
also Indian Summer - emo/hardcore punk/screamo, Slint is rather post-rock/math rock, i don't think we can identify them as phc

Preach!
Absolutely! Definitely more popular among my Canadian friends, so I contend with that. Don’t really hear much about them down south in the US, at least, sadly
Have you heard of Five minute ride? album: bathroom walls lipstick secrets.
Nice Manipulator record. That's a rarity!
This list is amazing!
I would have to add Minutemen and Slint
When Broken is easily fixed by silverstein.
Boysetsfire!
Thanks for putting this together. It is like a nice short documentary. I am totally ignorant of post-hardcore, but I am always trying to discover new things, whether it be classical or hardcore, or harcore classical :-) Oh by the way, fuck youtube.
great list!
though definitely it is Young Machetes from TBB for me ^^
Refused sounds like (to me) more early 2000s Nu metal. but good
I missed Bands like La Dispute or Touche amore.
Are you pulling albums from my collection????!
I would also recomend Foxy Shazam. Amazing band (the flamingo trigger album)
I don't know genres but I love the band Handsome from 1997
If I Knew What I Knew Then - Hot Rod Circuit
And Talking Songs for Walking / Necklace of Heads by Lungfish
bro how can you not put unwound in a Post hardcore list wtf
Dude this is an epic list tho i would probably swap tiger and the duke for the ocean and the sun but thats just personal preference really. And yeah manipulator is their best album..Fuck my childhood was awesome haha. Also seeing that enter shikari clip...you just know there were some hot af scene chicks there...ah man having an old fart glory days moment..gross haha
Now your Metallic Hardcore (metalcore) vinyls gimmie
Dude I did the same with tsoaf at hot topic lol same story 🤘 I also have the OG cd haha
Engine Down!!
tSoAF is so feckin gud
where is touche amor ?
Fall of Troy is more Mathcore but I can see the hardcore influence
You know what the core in "Mathcore" means, or?.......
@@FightingFish93 lmao
Why no Alex is on fire?
I like them, but they are not up there in the top 10 for me.
Great collection of music here
Though i feel full collapse was a poorly mixed album with amazing songs, needed more bass in the mix. War all the time had the levels mixed a lot better
I think I have all the albums by all these bands except blood brothers and tiger and the duke one. Gives me something to look into so thank you, Australia was kinda hard to find new music, especially what didn’t make it to here
Would you consider OneSideZero post-hardcore or did they belong to another genre?
definitely not post-hardcore.
I wouldn't call Spirit of Versailles Post Hardcore in conversation though probs, it's just my way of thinking regarding the HC area of music.
Noise rock bands like big black, naked raygun, The jesus lizard, Girls against Boys, Jawbox, Tar were also post hardcore, so post hardcore is a different genre to emo.
I'd say there is more than a overlap. Its all Hardcore.
Fuck yeah, Alphabets is the best.
AT THE DRIVE IN! BUT Mars Volta was better IMO
Good list.. Are you a Quicksand fan?
Quicksand Slip is a must!
beefsupreme72 Just saw them this summer on a co-headling tour w/ Glassjaw in Chicago. 3rd time I've caught Quicksand live.
Yeah I was lucky enough to see them a few times back in the 90'S. They were amazing live!
Quicksand is the quintessential post-hardcore band from the 90's and yet everyone always overlooks them. Such a shame.
I'm sorry, I will NEVER understand the obsession with At the Drive in...it has always just sounded like hot garbage to me.
Not mentioning Quicksand is criminal man
