Hey, someone's talking about Finch. This band should be on another one of your "Why They Didn't Get Big" episodes. Their first album had many good singles, my favorites being "What It Is to Burn" "Letters to You", and "Without You Here". Funeral for a Friend were a great band that broke out on the scene, too.
That Finch album is one those where I forget I know every single song until you play it again (after not hearing it for ungodly lengths of time). Doesn't get enough credit.
Brad Pitts THANK YOU. That album is leaps and bounds above their first. The first album felt rushed and forced. The second was so meticulous and brooding. I think SHTS is a masterpiece of post-hardcore.

Saw them last night and they had a set of 1-3 songs per album and it was so fucked. Banger after banger. No current band can touch their level.
Yeah Finn Said at the end of one of his videos that he doesn’t like talking about glassjaw because us die hard fans can be a bit much if he were to say something about glassjaw that we didn’t agree with. I’m paraphrasing btw.
Used to listen to it on the bus to school while I flicked my emo hair constantly. Translating the name still kicks ass and is one of the few records in that style of post hardcore that still matters.
I couldn't agree more. The one thing I'll take from my "emo/scene phase" is Saosin and the bands that I met because of them. (Underoath/Silverstein/Chiodos)
Nah underoath had those songs written with Dallas and Spencer came and did his thang . So it was almost simultaneously. Also underoath put out a full album higher quality
@@lawrence279 Agreed they were almost simultaneous but They're Only Chasing Safety (TOCS) would fit more into the "mild" variety as opposed to the "spicy" one that Translating The Name does. TOCS's drums are more tame and it's less "metal" overall (just more screaming). UO really hit their stride with the post-hardcore/metalcore combo on Define The Great Line. UO were influential in their own right, just think in a couple different conversations.
I was a HUGE Saosin fan. Translating the Name was such a groundbreaking album back then. I clearly remember being blown away by it. My bandmates and I instantly wanted to be like Saosin. I was and still am a massive Circa Survive fan. They were actually my favorite band for several years
THANK YOU for repping Saosin and Funeral For a Friend along with Finch. Funeral For a Friend were sadly long forgotten and never got enough credit for the amazing music they contributed to that style. They were playing main stages with Iron Maiden when they were just 23 years old. I met Justin and Beau from Saosin back in 2009 at a show in NYC, great guys, great guitarists! Justin's Gibson Les Paul Triple guitar swing still hasn't been reduplicated to this day by anybody. Amazing stage presence!
This ep changed everything. Every emo band wanted to play metal riffs after this and every vocalist was tearing up there voice trying to sound like Anthony Green.
Translating the name is one of my favorite posthc discs ever. Im so glad you cited finch, thursday, fata, and even sksk and ddg. Cool, man! Great video.
Of course you have a Saosin Translating the Name video. As if I couldn't love your content any more than I did, I saw this recommendation and was stoked. This band has impacted my taste in music so much to this day. I still play that EP a couple times every few weeks.. also tack on Mookies Last Christmas and the OG I Can Tell There Was an Accident Here Earlier. Just as an edit, I was never a big fan of Cove, but a show they did recently where Anthony AND Cove were singing on the same stage.. that moment totally changed my mind. I thought they sounded so stellar together and really wish they would put out some tunes with both vocalists!
Dude, I'm so glad there is someone talking about the music I grew up with and listen to. Also hilarious that you use clips from the Arlene's Grocery show, which I was at back in 2003 (Story of the Year played that show too).
Totally 100% with you. Saosin and they perch on their stilts is what got me into metal music and drumming. The first time I heard that fill in the middle of that songy jaw dropped to the floor because I had never heard anything like that before.
Translating the Name is the biggest what if for me. That EP impacted me in such a strong way and I will forever wonder what could have been had Anthony stayed in Saosin and the group continued in the same sound that EP gave out. Also, thank you for talking about Finch as they are criminally underrated and What It Is to Burn was a foundation piece in my musical history.
I was blown away the first time I listened Translating the Name. I used to be obsessed and listened all the time. Never listened past it though, when the beetle album came out and I found out they changed the vocalist I switched to Circa Survive just because I read it was the new Anthony Band. The power of a front man!
@@MegaTechpc ya bc im sure that was 3 first album you guys fell in love with. Theres just humanely possible way that somebody to fall in love with Saosin via the EP, and then find the Saosin w/ Cove better.
Marty Nehring I can agree with that. Everyone’s experience differs as do their opinions. I honestly don’t recall which Saosin I heard first a decade ago, but I definitely remember hearing both the EP and full album versions and preferring the polish of the album versions even at the time.
Both Saosin and Circa Survive were amazing. Two of my favorite bands at the time. That EP was sick. ( I have to remember to watch the rest of this video later). =)

I’ve never commented on a youtube video before but I just wanted to let you know how much I’ve enjoyed watching these, I’ve got some serious nostalgia going after revisiting some of these records. One band that has always stuck out to me from the 2000s emo days was Brand New, they seemed to have a level of songwriting talent and willingness to evolve that lots of the other bands from that era lacked - I’d love to see a video on those guys. Keep it up man!
Just saw them at Glass House Pomona 12/17 and Cove and Anthony were on stage together first time ever. Thanks for this video everything in here is really accurate. Translating the Name was Beau Burchell's vision and Anthony's vocals gave the whole thing a crazy edge that still resonates with everyone who hears it...
Whats weird about the comment section here is that nobody is really talking about saosin. Its just people talking about other bands and different things. While thats fine, it still feels off considering how amazing saosin was at the time. And i still listen to them to this day and i found them after they broke up. Excellent video.
I cannot tell you how happy I was to come across this video taking about Saosin. Im 26 and was listening to them in early high school and when I’d try to talk to MCR/emo fans about “Oh well hey have you heard of Saosin?? They’d look at me like I was speaking Greek. They are still a critical facet of my “getting over a hard time” playlist!
They are amazing. I watched them live a couple of weeks ago in Sydney and they played the entire Translating the name EP. It was one of the best nights of my life!!!
The drums of saosin is one of the main reasons why drums is one of my biggest passions in life. Some people listen to a song and immediately gravitate to the lyrics or guitar riffs first. For me I instantly tune into drums. All because of saosin!
I remember hearing Saosin Translating the Name EP and they truly define an entire genre and I was like what the hell? I wanted to know everything about them and who they were. I believe Saosin was gona be a household name however things didnt turn out that way. Still Saosin first ever EP def always gona game changer and always be a big part of the history in not just that genre of scream post or whatever but really in all of music in all genres, cuz they were the first that did it right. Great video!
Translating the Name is a masterpiece and it’s what changed my music taste for forever when I first heard it when I was 12 years old. 15 years later I’m still a huge fan, and have seen it performed live twice now. 🖤 I love Anthony.
Hell yeah! Never see anyone mention A Static Lullaby any more! And shoutout to SKSK, AZ REPRESENT!! Great video. Just wanted to emphasize how much Saosin are the reason any of the bands after exist, be it Pierce the Veil, Dance Gavin Dance, Sleeping With Sirens or Hail the Sun. Without Translating the Name, none of it happens! And as a drummer, I'm so glad you made the connection about the busy screamo drumming. I hadn't consciously made that connection but you're so right! They're the reason that risecore bands like Sleeping With Sirens, Woe Is Me, and Hands Like Houses still have that crazy over the top too-many-notes drumming style 😂 and even all these "swancore" bands as they're called, though a good chunk of them could be names Saosincore! Hail The Sun sound like a carbon copy of them sometimes, and then bands like Makari and In Angles are heavily indebted to both Saosin and Circa Survive. The influence here is nye immeasurable! AMAZING video as always and stoked to join the fb group!
@@thatoneguy2136 yep! Never heard about this bow, bo? bau? guy, despite loving Saosin's songs ever since. But the story you told about him and his vision is very inspirational.
I haven't heard anyone mention A Static Lullaby in over a decade. That first album was amazing, and I really wish they had gotten bigger than they did.
Translating The Name is still the absolute greatest EP I have ever heard. I listen through it again every now and then. Something about how raw and volatile it was keeps me hooked.
I will never forget From Autumn To Ashes. I was introduced to their music in 2002 when I was only 11 years old and I fell completely in love with their sound. They will always hold a special place in my life.
@@JABouchard I saw them open for TBS as well.. but it wasn't on the TOC tour.. it was in Cincinnati at Bogart's. Around 2005 I think.. It seems like it was a Co-Headling tour with TBS and Jimmy Eat World, but Jimmy Eat World didn't play that night. It was Circa Survive opening, then Motion City Soundtrack, and TBS. Seems like I'm missing someone. Lucero maybe. I've seen TBS at Bogart's several times so Lucero might have been a different TBS show.. lol
"Sleepers" was my very first impression of Saosin, so it's always been difficult for me to go back to Translating The Name. The self-title sounds tighter and less experimental in it's execution which is why I see it as their defining album. Regardless, this is a great video discussing their history and success.
Great video. A Beautiful Mistake - Light A Match For I Deserve To Burn...deserves a shout-out here. This was the album that brought me into the genre in 2002. But Saosin came in shortly after.
They are still one of my favorite bands (Granted I really like Anthony Green the most) so I really love Circa Survive and His Solo material as well! Just being upfront! But I still absolutely love their music! I’m really happy Anthony is back! I love their new material so much too! But I do love all of their music from beginning to now!
I’m a hip-hop fan, but love this page. As an older bother I took my sister to a shit ton of rock shows. (Why I like this page) She’s a big AFI fan but one day she put on Saosin - 7 Years… All the music my sister ever played me to that point never resonated like that song did. Then I went down the Anthony Green rabbit hole and a couple years later I was front row of the Sound of Animals Fighting show. Crazy how one song can flip a switch in your head to feel something. Keep up the great videos! P.s. I took my sister to a AFI/Tiger Army show with Saosin opening back in 2006…for some reason I thought Anthony Green was still in the band… I was so disappointed 😂
Everyone in this band except for Anthony is insanely under-rated at their respective instrument. Alex is a brilliant drummer who I wish people outside the scene would talk about more often. Justin is a shredder, Beau’s riffs are super tight and heavy, and Chris is a solid bassist who provides the right foundation for the other 3 to build on, but also lays in a short fill that elevates a melody or highlights a chord change perfectly, plus he and Beau a good backing vocalists.
I second this. I personally love post malone and how he got started, even though his music is very different from what I normally listen to. Would love a video on him
love it, saosin is one of my favorite bands -- still trying to rip that sound lol. I am a HUGE fan of Cove era over Anthony. Anthony is a legend for sure but i just dug the ST way more now that you mentioned budget that might be why.
Bro, THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU so much for making this video, I will watch it over and over... I just love Saosin SO much, particularly TTN and their eponymous full-length. I remember the first time I heard TTN, someone had it on in the background while they were doing stuff and I was just passing through the room doing laundry, and the sound of Saosin stopped me in my tracks, I felt like this was the sound I'd been waiting my whole life to hear... Downloaded the new album (which at the time was Saosin) pronto and have been truly in love with it ever since. I don't listen to that early stuff often as I've given it hundreds of listens, and now I save it for when I really need it, when I'm upset and need comfort I stick on Saosin or Iowa by SlipKnoT. Saosin the album ranks up there for me as one of the greatest albums of all time; it's not easy to get Saosin stuff in Australia, but I've got the album, the special edition of the album, the LP, the Come Close DVD, and a for radio release of Sleepers (also heaps of stickers, a big-ass poster and a zip-through hoodie). Again, thank you so very much for a video espousing the importance of Saosin and again I loved your one on how Slipknot got so big, you make really amazing clips bro, you're a f@#king legend...
Was watching a video yesterday where you said you can only be 3 years ahead of the game, more and you’re screwed. Anyone remember finch’s 2nd album say hello to sunshine? That is one example of how being too far ahead in the future screws your whole band Edit: it’s a way better album but fans just couldn’t deal with it
I rediscovered "Say Hello to Sunshine" the other week - it's still fucking amazing and yep, way better than their debut, but you're spot on with this point.
Last night I finally got to see them live here in Chile after being a fan for 14 years. Omg it was to totally worth it. They still rock it, band chemistry is great as always and Anthony's vocals are better than ever.
StayKrafty dude that’s awesome, I’m only 19 but since I was 11-12 my dad (who had me with my mom in high school so they’re relatively young) showed all the music he liked in high school. Underoath was one he showed me that I liked a lot and thought I would never see them live but they got back together in 2016 and I got to see them in 2016 and again in 2017 with my dad and he said it was his 8th or 9th time seeing them 😂

@@HollowOath14 That's right, man. The superficial fashion bullshit dies, but the good music lives on.
This is the EP that formed my entire perception of vocal delivery and melody. Terrible profile pic btw
Dude, same.
hall of fame album for sure
I think “they’re only chasing safety” should be in this conversation as well.
Def! Altho it did come out after the Saosin ep and i think the influence is pretty clear
@@amurorayna I’m with this one!

So happy this popped up on my algorithm. I came into saosin late but one of my favorite bands now.
Thanks for watching!
this band, and all of Anthony's musical endeavors, are some of the best things that happened to the scene. still releasing bangers to this day.
The acoustic version of Seven Years will forever hold a place in my heart
Exactly
Your loss, Coves performance on the ST record is brilliant and far more polished.

Thank you, much appreciated!

Thank you! Thats how most videos go lol
@@sarebeah I am very jealous!
I’ve been searching for the original saosin album before they got signed for years. It was perfect
Met Anthony Green and Max Green at the same time in '08.
I really miss good Warped Tours.
The drums of saosin is one of the main reasons why drums is one of my biggest passions in life. Some people listen to a song and immediately gravitate to the lyrics or guitar riffs first. For me I instantly tune into drums. All because of saosin!
Funeral for a friend perfected it too. Casually dressed is classic
I second this, they were also very "metallic" on Casually Dressed and Hours.
Hours is best though.
Saosin has always been my favorite emo/post hardcore/screamo band!

"Sleepers" was my very first impression of Saosin, so it's always been difficult for me to go back to Translating The Name. The self-title sounds tighter and less experimental in it's execution which is why I see it as their defining album. Regardless, this is a great video discussing their history and success.

All the music my sister ever played me to that point never resonated like that song did.
This analysis was 100% spot on
I concur.
Think you’d ever do a how they got big on Post Malone? I know he started in hardcore bands so maybe there’s something rock bands can learn from him.
I second this. I personally love post malone and how he got started, even though his music is very different from what I normally listen to. Would love a video on him
