    "No."

      +BannorPhil Not really every believer, but here is a question. Would any evidence convince you that you are not living, that you are not real? This is the type of question one asks if they ask a believer if there is any evidence that would convince them to change their mind, its as real as your hand (assuming you have a hand) for real believers.

    • @aljo909
      @aljo909 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Benjamin sMITH "its as real as your hand (assuming you have a hand) for real believers." There's a big difference. Apart from a few mentally disturbed people we all believe we are real and we all believe we have hands (if we have). With religion the religious reality is dramatically different for different religions. They are not just different they are contradictory. So the firmness of belief in something that's not verifiable is worthless since most people must logically be mistaken in this belief.

      +al jones The difference is maybe that I as an atheist accept that I have a hand. If I would accept the fact that my hand is not real, what would that change?

    Only Krauss presents a supportable argument in this discussion. The other guests talk about what they want to be true, but they have no evidence for what they say. "I believe in what the Bible says" is not proof of the existence of a god.

    • @annmariewest7259
      @annmariewest7259 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love how Krauss uses my argument about hell disproving "god" is loving. Death absolves "sin" - if it doesn't why kill "Jesus"???? The thought of torturing for eternity is vengeful, not loving, and was created to control the masses. There's no such thing as an afterlife - it was contrived in order to exert power over the uneducated.
      The other guests seem to be filled with some type of manic or hypersensitivity over an event; however the man who made the movie, bends the way the wind blows. He's been taught to feel, think, and be moved this way - my guess, from childhood. Indoctrination only works if it happens at a young age, or there's a profound weakness. How lucky he was to be born into a Christian home - phew - he could have been born into a Jewish home and then he'd have to suffer in hell for choosing the wrong religion. I really do not care what people believe - however, it's not the individual who's the problem anymore. Religions to me, are like gangs, and they want total control on their territory. History has shown us they will do everything they can to keep control. Why do you think religions alike are attacking and thwarting science??? Observable truth has already debunked so much of every religion's beliefs - science is a real threat!!!!
      We have proven that it is impossible for the vast human genome to have come from just two individuals, the earth is far greater than 6,000 years, and that it is impossible for a global flood to have occurred. I'm not even going to get into the ridiculousness of the bible's claims of people living into their 100's or that "god" stopped the earth from spinning for a day to complete a war. If "god" had that power, he would have made a perfect creation!!!! No species is perfect - not even close!
      I'm just glad there are people like Krauss, Dawkins, the late and great Hitchens, and Harris, et al. These individuals have the letters behind their name to shake up the system. Ultimately, I just want a secular government, educational system, and healthcare system. Religion needs to stay at home, period. No more killing people over myths - we should be passed all that by now!!!

      @RavusRiven 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's such an obvious fallacy when you just consider it for a moment.
      If the earth were closer to the sun we simply wouldn't exist and wouldn't be pondering the question to begin with...

      @TheXxkornmunkyx666 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To Fernando. Not even that. Does the guy know that the earths orbit is not a perfect circle? We are not consistently 93mil miles away. We are not right on the border between what's habitable and what will kill us. I'm pretty sure that earth gets like 3 mil miles closer to the sun in January and 3 mil away in what June or something.

    It amazes me that those believers constantly believe in an all-good, all-powerful, loving, perfect god, while at the same time being aware that many innocent kids die of starvation and disease as I type this, or many christians right now are being beheaded in Syria and Iraq. A loving, good god would NOT allow this to continue for so long.
    Then we hear the old "free-will" argument, or "god will send them kids to heaven, don't worry" argument. And I'm like - wait, the free-will of bad guys are more important than the lives of the innocent? And god would stand by and watch as innocents are tortured, instead of just sending them straight to heaven WITHOUT causing so much suffering?
    For an all-powerful god who loves his creation, he's doing a terrible job so far.

    The religious defenders had nothing of value to say. Everything they said was the same old groundless and useless drivel that's at the core of religious belief.
    I can appreciate the black gentleman's focus on doing good. But grownups simply do not need to presuppose bullshit like the Jesus myth to justify doing what will benefit other people.

      I dont agree with anything they said factually, but they did say a fair bit i think about how religious people understand their religion. Believing as a child, slowly adapting their frame or reference and the emphasis on personal spiritual feelings that you could compare possibly to meditation, hopeful placebo or low level psychosis.We don't need mythology and its harmful to society at large for sure, but i thought it was good to hear believers being open about their beliefs because even grown ups are driven by emotion as well as rationality.

    i agree with junteroly when you say "the creatard on the right is extra special" greatest quote i've ever heard.
    Although im a believer, you have to be an idiot to deny science. Atheists believe science will prove that there is no god but i think the exact opposite. I believe science will one day prove that there is a god.
    in fact only recently it has been discovered that there is actually a science to faith, and that it has much to do with the powerful subconcious mind. But the fact that faith has been taught by religious/spiritual leaders long before scientists began to study it, cant be ignored

  • @jpcurtis6052

    I've heard this phrase a little too much. "religious faith is about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ"...That's such a nonsensical cop-out. The phrase really says two things:
    1) There's no supporting evidence for my belief system so I have to retreat to the "personal relationship" line, to exempt myself from criticism or ridicule. Spoiler alert, it's not that effective.
    2) You implicitly or unconsciously recognize that there are variations in how our brains interpret the world around us, essentially we interpret objective signals in a way that supports our beliefs- so we can't really trust our own interpretations all the time- best if we try to recuse our beliefs from the process and interpret the evidence as objectively as we can. Science helps us do that- Religion is the opposite.

    • @lyndsaylight8978
      @lyndsaylight8978 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is historical evidence that back up the claims of the existence of Christ. Why are people saying there is now evidence? There is literally thousands of manuscripts discussing the existence of a man named Jesus Christ who performed miracles and died in the cross. Also, those who believe in Christ have experienced Him and seen them in their life. It’s not an excuse to say that they have a relationship with Him, it’s how they can explain that they have experienced His goodness and real-ness. Hopefully, one day, God let’s you see Him.

    I like this unaffiliated Christian and the spiritual guy. Unaffiliated Christians (not to be confused with non-denominational Christians) are not usually the kind of people that is trying to convince you into accepting their beliefs. They are people who are disappointed by the dogmas and the religious leaders and just pick what they like from their home religion and leave the unwanted burden behind. In a truly secular society, religious people of different affiliations would discuss public matters and solve society problems by seeking arguments that are not solely based on their religious tenants. Unaffiliated religious people and spiritualists tent in that way.
    But, on the other hand, this type of thinking can also be seen as lack of commitment. If I have firm principles, I can apply them as a criteria for what to keep and what to abandon from my home religion, political party or pet ideology; but this process can also be done just by gut feeling. I.e. keeping the comfort of religiosity without the burden of doing good deeds.

    I'm an atheist and I am at a stage in my life, 36 years old, where death still frightens me. Probably because I love life so much and I'm far from having experienced everything that I'd like to. But this 'anxiety' about death has never and will never cause me to set aside my sanity and intellect, by adopting to some centuries old fairytale. I believe that this anxiety about death is the most common of human traits and sentiments and is the main source of fuel for religious beliefs. I get why people are drawn to and hang on to their religious beliefs.. My hope and expectation is that as I grow older this anxiety will start to wear of. In the mean time I see no other option than to try to live life to the fullest and make every day count..which isn't always easy, but hey, keeps things interesting at least :)

    It seems from the abrupt and rough edits like a lot of Lawrence Krauss's arguments about science and cosmology got censored out which is a real piss off. Especially when Krauss had a chance to take the piss out of the colossally ignorant statement about the earth having to be an exact distance from the sun. Fact is the earth is roughly three million miles closer during the northern hemisphere's winter season and earth's angle of axis has shifted considerably over it's existence.

    Its the same old tired argument over and over that sadly is an argument of necessitation. Over time ( which is possibly why these are always done) you will witness the religious zealots using science terminology and converting it to religious jargon. With each talk religious zealots, who have a morsel of doubt, pick and choose phrases and theories then make romantic, religious memes. As far as I know religion is about money, power, corruption, deceit, and control. Deepak Chopra and Murican evangelists make a fortune in romantic, quasi philosophical, death memes. Asks yourself this. How much money is the esteemed Lawrence Krauss making sharing knowledge and rejoicing skepticism?
    "It's obvious they are getting closer and closer to the edge where they can cure anything. Meanwhile the world is moving closer and closer to the edge where they can kill us all. It's very interesting: science is going in one direction and politics is going in the other. I'm still an optimist. I think when people give up doing stupid things, it's like walking into a wall, eventually you start looking for the door and you do something intelligent. The human race has to do something intelligent in the next 10-20 years. It just can't go on screwing up everything." - Robert Anton Wilson

    Krauss is way too acerbic, you cannot convince a believer or someone on the fence by being so arrogant and dismissive. NDT, Sagan and Sam Harris are way better in this regard.

    Krauss' book "A Universe from Nothing" has so many mistakes from a scientific/physics perspective, it's kind of sad that so much of the public has been manipulated into thinking what Krauss says is real science, when it is not. For example, see: arxiv.org/abs/1405.6091
