+eric rouach I saw those Rubinstein Comp. performances recently, but not all because it's not available in the US. However, the performances I've watched are so different styled than his Chopin Competition. I actually LOVED IT! He was full of expressions, that's for sure, and I think due to his "heavy" gestures that the conservative judges did not choose him? Surely, the younger, progressive generation jury actually chose him for their Jury Prize. I actually loved how he was full of expressions, and even ppl who are not familiar with classical music, esp. less-known pieces like Bartok and Liszt would surely enjoy watching his performances because he seemed to be telling the story or theme of the music, like you're watching a movie, u know what I mean? I def. enjoyed watching and listening to his performances altho I was not familiar with certain pieces of music, but he seemed to be telling a story with each piece. Despite his gestures, when you just listen with closed eyes, you can hear how the sound is so clear with expressions. It's a terrible shame that he had to settle for third, and even probably had to tone down his expressions for the Chopin Competition. I hope he can play with the fullest expressions now that he's done with competitions. He's one of very few pianists whom I actually love to watch and listen, the other one is Nobuyuki, and who can't be moved by such a divine artist.
Who knows what Liszt discussions were regarding the Divine Comedy.. wish i could go back and just over hear his opinions, my favorite composer reflecting on my favorite poet.... always loved this piece.. fantastic playing, very technical though
