I’m sorry, I take issue with the claim that RBY’s elite four was hard.
Lorelei’s RB team is hot garbage-Growl on Dewgong and Slowbro (who also has Withdraw, and WATER GUN), three separate normal type moves on Jynx, and literally zero pokemon with Ice Beam and only one with a STAB move more powerful than 75 BP. Yellow slightly remedies this by giving Slowbro Surf and Psychic and Cloyster Ice Beam, Jynx’s Body Slam is replaced with Lovely Kiss, and Growl is replaced with Bubblebeam on Dewgong, but this still isn’t the pinnacle of difficulty.
Bruno: has no healing
RB: has TWO IDENTICAL Onixes, whose strongest moves are Slam and who do not have a ground move. Also, they have Harden. Machamp has Leer and Focus Energy (which Hitmonlee also has), which QUARTERS your chance to crit in Gen 1, and Hitmonchan has Ice and Thunder Punch, which were special moves in Gen 1.
Yellow, again, makes this slightly better, getting rid of Rage and Harden on both Onixes, replacing Rock Throw with Rock Slide, and giving them both ground moves in Dig and Earthquake. Hitmonchan’s Counter (which was basically useless in Gen 1, only countering Normal or Fighting Moves) is now Double Team, but the one physical move it had, Mega Punch, is now Fire Punch. Hitmonlee’s Focus Energy is now Double Team as well, and Jump Kick is now Double Kick, which…I mean, it’s more accurate, but also 60% of the power (also, fun fact, a glitch in the way Jump Kick and High Jump Kick worked in Gen 1 made it so that if they missed, the user took 1 point of damage instead of 50%. These games are help together with duct tape and spite). Machamp still has Leer, but Focus Energy is now Strength. Fissure (which scared the crap out of me the first time I played through the game) has been changed to Karate Chop (which was a normal in Gen 1).
Agatha: has two Gengar and a Haunter. I know the Elite Four and Gym Leaders aren’t known for type diversity, but seriously? Three of the same Pokemon? Why did they even try to make a Ghost trainer with ONE fully evolved Ghost Pokemon? Also, yeah, Haunter isn’t fully evolved! And it’s still the best mon on her team!
Well, strictly speaking, it’s tied with her first Gengar because they have THE EXACT SAME MOVESET (in RB). Confuse Ray, Night Shade, Hypnosis, and Dream Eater is actually a decent combo. However, Gengar 2 also has Dream Eater, but no sleep move! This is after you have the Poke Flute! Instead, it has Toxic. Whatever. But Golbat has BOTH Supersonic, which is 55% accurate, and Confuse Ray, which is 100% accurate! Why! Arbok doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses (get it, cuz it has Glare), so in reality Agatha is running a Status team that can be really annoying but is easily manageable.
Yellow fixes some things and makes others worse. Gengar 1 is now distinct from Haunter, with Confuse Ray, Lick, Substitute, and Mega Drain. Excusing the low base power moves because they were all that were available, this is pretty good! Haunter keeps its moveset from RB, but Gengar 2 switches Toxic for Hypnosis and Night Shade for Psychic, so, while it has no STAB moves (and Night Shade didn’t really count anyway), it is more coherent. Arbok is almost the same, but with Bite switched for Wrap, which is really, really annoying. However, Golbat has…made some life choices. It switched out the wrong Confusion move, keeping Supersonic and replacing Confuse Ray with…Leech Life. You know, the 20 bp non STAB move? Yeah, that one. Also, it switched Haze for Toxic, which I think is an improvement.
As for Lance, we have PROBLEMS. He has Bruno’s problem of identical snakes (Dragonair), and Agatha’s problem of unevolved mons due to lack of pokemon of his chosen type. Gyarados has Dragon Rage and Leer. Aerodactyl has no STAB moves, instead opting to go for three (3) normal attacks alongside…Supersonic. Again. Dragonite also has only normal attacks, eschewing its preevolutions’ Dragon Rage for Barrier. Oh, yeah, the actual dragons have Agility, Slam, and Hyper Beam. Speaking of, the one thing Lance got right was giving Hyper Beam to all his Pokémon. If you didn’t know, Hyper Beam doesn’t need to recharge in Gen 1 if it knocks out an opponent. As such, having a 150 bp move with no drawback can be considered mildly good.
Yellow keeps this trait and puts others into overdrive. Gyarados is the same, but Aerodactyl now has not one but two STAB moves in Wing Attack and Fly, along with Swift. The Dragons have been totally revamped, with the only move that carries over from RB being Hyper Beam-the Dragonairs are distinct, with one running Thunderbolt and Thunder Wave and the other running Ice and Bubblebeam. Dragonite, however, has become truly terrifying: Hyper Beam, Blizzard, Fire Blast, and Thunder. This is the only good Pokémon in the entire elite four.
So, let’s recap before we move on to me complaining about the champion: weak moves, few STAB moves, and duplicate and unevolved pokemon, not to mention the lack of type diversity or AI malfunctions (you all know about Lorelei’s Dewgong in RB and Venomoth soloing Dragonite in Twitch Plays Pokémon).
Alright, let’s talk about Blue. He’s an interesting case because across all three games he has six possible teams. Let’s go over them.
Each team has an Alakazam. In RB, it has Psybeam, Psychic, Reflect, and Recover. In Yellow, Reflect is replaced with Kinesis. This is a pretty good set on an amazing mon-if it had coverage or support instead of Psybeam, it would be just about perfect. This is where the good ends.
In RB, he has a Pidgeot and a Rhydon. Pidgeot is not a good Pokemon, but it’s made even worse with the fact that it knows Whirlwind, a move that did LITERALLY NOTHING in Gen 1. Rhydon isn’t much better, with BOTH Leer and Tail Whip (yes, this is the champion battle) and only normal type moves.
In Yellow, he has a Sandslash-Earthquake is good, Slash, which pretty much always crits in Gen 1, is pretty good, and then…Poison Sting, a 15 bp move. Somehow, we beat Agatha’s Golbat’s Leech Life for weakest move. Oh, but we’re just getting started.
Let’s talk about Exeggutor. Two of the three RB teams have one and every Yellow team has one. In RB, this thing’s moveset is Hypnosis, Stomp, and Barrage. That’s it. How Blue decided it was a good idea to evolve it before level 25, where Exeggcute learns Reflect, is a mystery to me. How he decided to teach it NO MORE MOVES after that is even more so. Don’t worry, though, it gets better-because in Yellow, its fourth move slot is filled in with Leech Seed. Guess what level Exeggcute learns Leech Seed? Level 28. Guess when Exeggutor learns Stomp? Level 28. That’s right, this is the original impossible Pokémon, predating Norman’s levels 28 and 31 Slakings and even Lance’s level 47 Dragonites. Blue chose to add 1 of the 5 moves he could add to make his Pokémon break the laws of physics.
Arcanine time. On two teams in RB, its moveset is Ember-let me stop you right there. Blue must just be really bad at choosing when he uses his evolution stones, because Growlithe learns Flamethrower by level up and Arcanine doesn’t. Oh, don’t worry, it gets worse-Arcanine also knows Leer, and, the cherry on top, the useless Roar. Yes, Blue has both phasing moves on his team in the one generation that phasing didn’t work. Let’s move on.
Gyarados, on two teams in RB, is literally identical to Lance’s Gyarados. Next.
In Yellow, Blue switches up his Pokémon choices a little, having two of Ninetales, Magneton, and Cloyster. Cloyster has both Ice Beam and Aurora Beam, Magneton has Screech with the only move it could take advantage of that with being Swift, and Ninetales has Fire Spin as its only STAB move. Now, let’s talk about the real crimes: the starters.
Charizard has Rage. Rage locks you into using it, and, since Blue always brings out his starter last, this means once Charizard uses it, you’ve as good as won the battle. It’s pretty okay, other than that-Fire Blast, Fire Spin, and Slash are all solid choices.
Blastoise has Withdraw. It is the strongest Pokémon on the strongest trainer’s team, and it has Withdraw.
Venusaur has a pretty good moveset, if you don’t count the fact that all its moves are grass type. Growth is one of two moves in the game that raise your Special stat, essentially acting as a Calm Mind boost. The moves all serve a purpose: Razor Leaf has near-guaranteed crits, Mega Drain recovers health, and Solarbeam is a two-turn nuke. I like this mon’s design.
Next, Vaporeon. Oh, yeah, in Yellow Blue gets an Eevee and it will evolve differently based on the outcomes of the battles in the Lab and Viridian City. Anyway. Vaporeon’s only crime is Mist, which never really needs to come into play if you play alright.
Jolteon has Pin Missile, coming off of its truly devastatingly powerful base 65 attack. However, it’s one of the only moves in the game that can hit the Psychic type for super effective damage, so I’ll let it slide.
Flareon…poor Flareon. My favorite Eeveelution, and its only physical move in this battle is Quick Attack. Here, buddy, have Flamethrower and Fire Spin. What do you mean you don’t want Reflect?
