I was traveling through Chicago and wanted to see a game. I saw the White Sox were in town so I called the ticket office and asked what time the game started. They asked "What time can you get here?"
😉
"Can you pitch?"

Old one, but rim shot anyway.

Played baseball for 17 years starting in Little League and never heard of "ACE". I love it and so true! I know coaches hate mental mistakes
FOR the above view! I really like this aspect of your vids: When other commentators cover SAME aspects, they do NOT have the impact your breakdowns have. My son loves seeing the whole field view bc "it is less boring to see that other players have a roll (are in motion covering bases, backout etc) It doesn't have to be the exclusive pov, but amazing to see whole field. Thanks! Also credit to the umpire on this play. He could have also lacked attention but stayed engaged.
Another point: Because the first baseman has his back to the runner after he fields the ball, if I'm the second baseman I'm taking note of the baserunner's speed coming down the line and yelling at the first baseman to hustle it up!
He didn’t even need to win the race to the bag just tag the runner
White Sox fan here; even during the late 70s, they weren't this bad, even though they were bad. After last year I thought, "No place else to go but up". How wrong I was.
I remember how angry announcer Hawk Harrelson would get at the White Sox when the team was bad and made stupid errors in the early 2010s. Can you imagine what his reaction would be to the current team if he was still their announcer?
@@ConcernedCitizen5514 Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall would have blown their tops if they were announcing for a Sox team this bad.
@@ConcernedCitizen5514I wish Hawk hadn’t retired. This season would have given us some legendary rants. He’d have an aneurysm by the 3rd inning during the average White Sox game this season. 😂
@@michaelstein7510 During his later years, Hawk would sometimes get so pissed off watching the team play terrible that he would go 20-30 seconds without saying anything at all. I don't know whether he had mentally checked out by that point, but I could see him staying silent and making Steve Stone do all of the talking.
until u offical win 0 u can say theirs anywhere to go but up, and this is as a vikings fan
From where he fielded the ball, the first baseban almost certainly could have run right at the runner and tagged him; but it's an instantaneous decision. He clearly did not run hard to tag the base and seemed to take a little stutter or half step at the end that cost him.
He also could have decided to run through the base, even if it was only a step or two.
@leonardshevlin7260 That increases the risk of collision and possibly injuring the batter-runner and himself.
@@keith6706 No, because the batter would not have caught up to him.
He needed to run to the bag but make a 3\45 degree turn to his left to avoid a collision, and yes he should have done that and run thru the bag parallel to the line from home to first. I would say that if he had Bill Buckner knees maybe he could not do that. By the way why was the second basement not sprinting to the bag, as a throw might have been even a quicker way to get the ball to the bag compared to having a gimpy slow first baseman running there There are slow injured first basemen, but every second baseman should be quick enough to beat a runner to the bag, especially since this was a chopper that almost made it to first base, not a short bunt,
We are used to seeing too frequent lack of hustle on the base paths in MLB, often from guys admiring their long drives. A tip of the cap to the hitter in this case for EARNING that base by treating it as up for grabs.
I want to like the Red Sox because I detest the Yankees. But I have an issue with Devers ‘cause I’ve never seen him run hard down the First Base line on a ground-ball to the infield
@@dddttt5151 Ha! I am old enough to remember Red Sox manager Dick Williams benching Carl Yaztrzemski in 1969 for not hustling to first on a groundout. Made a big splash at the time.
Coincidentally, recently viewed Matt's "oldie" video on how to make it into Big League baseball. Today's is a must-see clip for player-procurement poobahs. If 1b were hustling, he would have *HAD* to run through the bag. Despite the Sox's plight, and all those empty seats, how does it slip your mind that you're in The Show? Mr. T said it best: "I pity the fool."
You're making TH-cam videos and I have to suffer watching Derek Shelton managing my beloved Pirates that I've been following since the late !950's. Say it ain't so Joe, lol.

This white sox fan says "Manos, the hands of fate" 😅
The White Sox, currently, are a strong argument for the need for relegation in US “major leagues.” The fans who bought tickets, especially season tickets, along with the inflated parking, food, and drink prices were expecting a team competing at the MLB level.
These guys ain’t it.
I'd add REPARATIONS for the fans...Pick a year (limit 5).
We can't do relegation until the minor leagues have adequate stadiums. In MLB it's even less possible because of the team affiliations.
Reinsdorf grenaded the team, he wants a new stadium and is using Nashville as a bargaining chip, threatening to move there if the city of Chicago doesn’t cave. What a POS. I’m done with baseball anyhow, too woke and PC……the Guardians, 🤣SMH.

White Sox fans come to this channel to watch their team
I just assumed they're Chicago area residents and this was their only option to see their team due to TV blackouts 😂
It's cheaper and you can shut it off if need be.
And the need be .
Derek Jeter once said "If you can't put forth 4 seconds of effort to run from the batter's box to 1st base, you shouldn't be playing the game". Kudos to the batter-runner for never taking anything for granted. Hopefully the Sox learned from this, but I'm guessing they're lousy learners cuz they've probably had hundreds of opportunities to learn from their 'misplays'.
As a Yankee-hater, I HAVE to agree with Jeter.
MANAGER: "You looked like you're tired. Have a seat on the bench and rest."
Whatever happened to the old adage “you’re gonna win 60 games, you’re gonna lose 60 games, it’s what you do with the other 42 games that matter.” The White Sox just blew that theory to smithereens.
They’re not even gonna win 42 games, at this point. 😂 It’s gonna be a struggle to top 35.
why not just turn to his left and tag the runner?
Certainly an option, however it has the risks of the ball getting jarred loose and also the runner evading the tag. It would be the best option of course if he couldn't beat the runner to first.
@@furyofbongos Very, very poor excuse you are using. Guys have been tagged going down to first base thousands of times. It's the SURE play when the runner is right there.
@@furyofbongosthere are rules against runners knocking the ball out of players gloves and another rule is running out of the baseline. It is very difficult to evade a tag from home to first
He thought the base was the easier option. At least, I think he thought...
The runner shouldn’t be there is the point. Prince fielder could’ve outran that guy if he tried. Prince fielder was not fast if you forgot.
Naturally the Sox are on a tear after this video arrives. I figured the A’s would drop one or two, and with six games vs. the don’t-care Angels (lost 8-4 last night) the ‘62 Mets are nervous again.
Being a Cub since 1983, I feel White Sox fans pain. Especially when the '85 Cubs lost 13 in a row. But they still won 70 games somehow. White Sox are on pace for 42 wins or something like that? Feel kinda bad for them tbh.
As of this moment, the White Sox are on pace for 36 wins. If they make 42, they won't be as bad as, or worse than, the 1962 Mets
@@Rick_King ugh '62 Mets...those poor bastards.
The White Sux will have to go 8-5 over the last 13 to hit 42 wins.
I have honestly been checked out for a while. At this point just ready for the year to end. Also just waiting for Jerry to “go to glory” feel like fans should be able to petition MLB for refugee status.
Did you see the pitcher's reaction to the play? I imagine him rolling his eyes at his first baseman.
I’ll give Andres giminez this: guy plays great defense and is pretty fast. Not much pop which is frustrating for a guy with a $100 million contract, but at least he’s trying, which is more than can be said for a guy like benintendi
In fairness, if you're that far out of it, it's tough to risk a collision and severe injury on a random play at first.
The '62 Mets love the '24 White Sox. They will soon no longer be the worst team ever!
And just minutes ago, the White Sox lost game #115.
Vaughn is a gamer. He unfortunately looked for runner at 2b to make sure he wasn't headed to 3b. That was awareness. That awareness cost him the out.
I was at this game sitting in the front row on the 1st base side. Later this inning a very similar play happened, and Vaughn got the out- the fans let out a very loud ironic cheer. It was a really fun game. Probably about 10 plays similar to this you could have shown.
A basketball coach would bench a player after that kind of effort. Why doesn’t the manager just remove 1B from the game? Has to be some consequences to that type of effort. Is it just not part of baseball culture? I know you can’t sub him back in like in baseball, but they aren’t going to the playoffs or anything.
@@MrMkardon As you said sub rules are different than in other sports. It would depend on who he has on his bench, what his other options were. Cause once you sub there is no going back.
Players don't often get pulled in baseball for lack of effort like in football or basketball.
I would like to see the manager call time, go to first base, chew out the player, then return to the dugout without pulling the player. That's what the boss in any other business would do.
One problem with sports teams is they can have too many die-hard fans and not enough fair-weather fans. This can lead to teams going low budget as a means of making money. What's crazy is Chicago has an incredible sports market.
The biggest problem is politicians buying them stadiums
Anyone in the majors that's THAT LAZY should be sent back down to the minors before the game is even over. Making all that money, in a position millions would KILL FOR, and THAT as what we get?...absolutely inexcusable.
Please don't tell me he was elevated when rosters expanded.
@@paulpinball9952 No idea. I don't even care...ANYONE that does this should be sent back down before they even get back to the dugout.
Baseballs roster rules don't really allow that. This is his 4th year in the majors. It's likely he has no option years left. Meaning he can't just be sent down without other teams claiming him and the sox losing him for nothing.
As certain as you are of your judgement based off one play he's actually been an okay hitter and is still under team control for a while now.
This has definitely been his worst year since this rookie year but I doubt they're just gonna give up on him forever based on one play.
I was just watching “Major League 2” with my son and he said he wanted to play for the Chicago White Sox. I laughed, and said “no you don’t”
@@KY-vf4zd Parkman you stud!!!
Whats crazy is that the White Sox are still drawing more fans then the Rays and the Rays are consistently good and managed to get a new stadium approved for St. Pete
its not like baseball is a high exertion sport, so there really is no reason whatsoever for not giving 100% on those few plays when you have to.
Call me crazy, but I think Andrew Vaughn will have that .300/.350/30hr/100 rbi year.
Pretty much sums up the White Sox season...
Well said, Matt. You also mirror the words of AJ Hinch. The only reason I can even stand to watch the Tigers is because you can watch how he has them disciplined. They finished 2 games below .500 last year - but the IF and OF had their “ready footwork” in sync, except for one player. (Badoo, who is in Toledo this season.)
For me, watching the White Sox be a dumpster fire is fun.
Imagine how Harry Caray would sound if he was doing the play-by-play for the White Sox today.
The White Sox have fans? That’s a good one.
They are smart enough that they refuse to support a loser team, and one that has been a loser for a while now. The world series was 20 years ago!
In fairness, he was probably distracted by all the white shirts from the huge crowd.
If the White Sox want to fill the seats, they can always blow up disco records.

Sometimes it’s fascinating to watch a really bad team implode. Like the Pistons when they lost 28 games in a row earlier this year. It’s astonishing an MLB team can play this badly.

Never quit just because you think the other guy is going to quit.
They need to hire a manager who will get right in a player's face - that is protected by the owner for doing so - to change that culture.
Three words: They stopped caring.
All the first baseman had to do was step in front of the runner no need to retreat to the bag.

Perhaps White Sox fans should consult Red Sox fans about how to watch their respective teams.
I have been a White Sox fan since 1984. They had some bad teams in the late 1980s until they drafted Frank Thomas. But this current team is pathetic and the worst team any of us have ever seen. I know that the 1962 Mets were historically bad, but they at least had the excuse that they were an expansion team starting from ground zero. The 2024 White Sox have no excuse for their horrible level of play. I am amazed that anyone bothers to go to the stadium or even watch their games on tv.
You can only lose as many games as they have in baseball due to lack of effort in a large portion of those games. No way to lose 20 plus games in a row without lack of effort. Sad. Baseball deserves better.
We don’t . Plus it’s getting dangerous again down on 35th and shields.

Just watched this. I disagree with your analysis of what happened here. Not sure that the first baseman would have beat the runner even had he hustled. The proper play (speaking as a former first baseman)was to cut him off and tag him. Clearly the shorter distance for him.
Why didn’t he tag him running down the line??
Hustle ChiSox. You’re only 51 games back.
That kind of stuff is the manager's fault.

@@billstade9779 yeah crazy that they have struggled to this degree
Having watched Grady Sizemore for most of his career, laying everything on the line, this must drive him crazy.

It’s clear that the team has given up
Why didn't he just tag the runner? He had more than enough time to at least make the tag.
Was it ruled an error?
@@billyfoster9077 base hit I believe
Errors aren't usually called for bad decisions. So just because a second baseman tosses the ball to first instead of throwing hard enough to get an easy out, as an example, that's not officially an error. In fact, that's specifically given in the rule commentary as an example of something that doesn't count as an error. In this case, there could be any number of legit thoretical reasons why the fielder might not have gotten to first quickly enough (sudden cramp, pulled a muscle, whatever) that it wouldn't be scored as an error, despite in this case it clearly being just laziness.
