    "As a rule, asteroids don't get back up and chase fleeing ships"
    I could swear I saw that rock get up and chase those refugees. At least, that's what I had to put in my report for why I had to use the Empire's largest weapon system on a planet recently struck by an asteroid.

    Good point, Isaac. This was my biggest gripe with the movie Interstellar. If there were a "blight" infecting crop species, it would still be immensely easier and cheaper to just start growing all your food in sealed, sterilized facilities rather than terraforming another planet and moving the *entire human race* there in spaceships. It's still one of my favourite movies; don't get me wrong. I just wished that the writers had spent a little more time dealing with this glaring plot hole.

    @18:32: "If you are surprised...welcome to SFIA." ROTFL! New rule: Next time somebody makes one of those cosmic disaster movies like Deep Impact, 2012, etc., Isaac Arthur must be one of the scientists in the room when they're making the Big Plan. After hearing out a few desperate strategies for saving a few "best and brightest" types, he will of course raise his hand, then say, "Excuse me, you guys are planning *way* too small. [Insert amazing and grandiose way to save the whole damn world here]"

      @@isaacarthurSFIA Commenting on that evacuating Earth thing. Obviously a lot depends on the nature of the disaster to come. But as you were talking to start with so much about bunkers and whom to choose for them. Wanted to add here - there exists a country on Earth that has modern era nuclear bomb rated bunkers for the entire population of the country when you add up both civilian locations and the unknown military ones - Finland. 5.5 million population and they keep on digging for more. There is an underground city beneath the capital to give an example. They go by what is called comprehensive defense doctrine aka total defense doctrine - meaning that the whole country is both trained for and geared for to turn on survival mode. Aka an actual prepper nation. There will eventually be more shelters than population to be honest. Lol, even the home of Santa up in north of the country is built inside one of such bunkers - it's not like built with concrete alone - but Finland happens to stand on some of the worlds oldest rock, hardest granite in existence - so they have been digging in for years now. Sure for issues on Earth you need an army and so forth, that's taken in account, but the point is that no-one is to be left behind if need be. And even certain stuff is stockpiled from meds or medical equipment, food, fuel - such - as well as having specific factories down under ground too. Oh, and water sources.... so on. They make it possible simply by using the bunkers for various different activities and other uses when not needed for their original purpose. Swimming halls, sports facilities, parking places, shops, set a Santa Park on and on - you see building underground is actually cheaper than making buildings on top of the ground. And well - using them for other stuff helps keep the locations producing a bit of income to help the upkeep and to have state of art life support ready to go. Anyhow, makes one think that as they gone that far and obviously have the tools to dig more - well then it will be possible to add more there too - underground areas for more facilities yet, for growing stuff - even some major roads (would be safer during winter anyhow).

      Possible spoilers for Horizon Zero Dawn, so tread with care.
      I was thinking about it throughout the genetic briefcase part, and I would think if the video's scenario is viable, then so is Project Zero Dawn. But if we can do both, there are tons of reasons why we would prefer the video's scenario.
      So, my prediction: Isaac-approved, just unnecessary unless you have something really keeping you bound to the planet.

      Depends on the warning we get. We already have the capacity to construct multi kilometer megastructures and nuclear thermal rocket engines. Ships that can lift tens of thousands of tons per launch are easily possible. Even with just a one decade warning we could build spaceborn habitation and move to space tens if not hundreds of millions.

    • @diabeticalien3584
      @diabeticalien3584 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Humans could most likely do multiple things, but it relies on three aspects: A), We all need to work together. B) We are going to be rerouting almost our entire economy towards this project, and C) we need to star thinking AHEAD. We could most likely send robots to the moon, to establish some sort of base, while building a massive underground bunker in every country in the world with a collection of animals and their DNA (just in case) with about a 2 year+ food supply, which would be easy. Then we could send ships to various planets and maybe even just make orbital habitats. These orbital habitats could go around the sun a few times, spend about 4 years in space, then go back to earth to see if its cleared up. At the same time, some people are on the moon using Helium 3 and growing plants to fee themselves.
