About twenty years ago I was waiting in my car by a small wharf in southwest New Brunswick, to help step a mast and rig up a small yacht. The CBC were playing the piano competition's winners from Montreal, and I only heard the last two thirds of this piece performed by a 17 year old young man. It was lyrical, volcanic, tumultuous and very compelling; the first time I had heard it. Unforgettable, one of those special moments of music, time and place. I also remember the exact time and place I heard the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, Winter from The Four Last Songs, transfixed by mystery and beauty.

Balakirev's fantasy "Islamey" - is the composer's most famous work for piano, the pinnacle of piano creativity - very bright, colorful, incredibly virtuosic work, combining the features of folk - genre symphonism, vividly contrasting kabardian and tatar themes. Emil Grigoryevich Gilels - is a mature, accomplished musician with brilliant technique, a virtuoso in the highest sense of the word, with a refined pianistic skill, an amazing sense of form and architectonics. . .But the main thing is, that Emil Gilels has a rare gift to breathe a lively and direct feeling into the work that he performs. . .

The slow part is a sensation! Most pianists just play it slow and piano but nothing more

Gilels is the only pianist that fully understands this piece and the only one who masters it from the very beginning to the very end, playing it cohesively all the way till the end.

Fabulous! Finally, the performance doesn't sound as though the pianist is faking his or her way through the hard parts. And he doesn't moon over the slower, second theme. It flows so naturally and beautifully.

one of my top 4 favourite pianists (the others are Hoffmann, Idil Biret and Maria Grinberg). This is fine but i still prefer Idil Biret's rendition.

Гилельсовская интерпретация Исламея лучшая наряду с Григорием Гинзбургом.

Interesting contrast with Boris Berezovsky's performance. There is far more expression and emotional depth in Gilels' performance, what we love Gilels for. And a bit less technical excellence, which is fine.

omyl ,michigan - mistake, you are wrong...Gilels bol vzdy technicky perfektny a zvladal vsetko co hral s technickym NADHLADOM , v orvom rade mu išlo o hudbu,
hudobny obsah; a bohaty farebny klavirny ZVUK...ktory je neopakovatelny

Se oyen todas las notas; algo fundamental, no el atropello generado por ser rapidos al interpretar.......
