Is Nigeria about to break apart?

  • Nigeria is confronted by several forces tearing the country apart. Firstly, there is religion. Christianity is most widespread in the southern part, while Islam is dominant in the northern regions.
The country has over 250 indigenous tribes that exhibit different political views and values, especially among the major tribal groups such as the Hausa, the Yoruba and the Igbo.
In the 1960s Nigeria almost split apart when Biafra, an oil-rich region in the southeast, sought independence, resulting in a devastating conflict where more than a million lives were lost. Eventually, the government emerged as the winner.
The breakup of African countries, including Nigeria, seems likely due to the failure of colonial powers to build strong nations. Examples like Somaliland and the internal unrest in Ethiopia, show the desire for autonomy and even full separation. Eritrea and South Sudan have already pursued independence. Notably, Nigeria still grapples with unresolved secessionist movements, such as the Igbo's pursuit of Biafra, which continue to challenge national unity.

Honestly, from a country that has so much religious division between Christians and Muslims, over 250 indigenous tribes and is also located in an unstable conflict zone where many terror organisations operate, it's not even that surprising to hear that it's breaking apart. I wish the best for the Nigerian people.

What I'm questioning would be wether separated countries (let's just say northern and southern Nigeria as a possible scenario in this case) could emerge with other (seperated) countries into new ones, based on their ethnicity, religion or language. One example being the reunification of the two German states in 1989.
We're witnessing something similar yet different with the East African Federation, where multiple African countries, including the relatively new South Sudan, separating from Sudan.
I once saw a video in which, if you factor religion, languages (English, French, Arabic mostly) and then the surface of the tribes (as they are vastly different but have some common aspects), you'd have about seven bigger countries within Africa. Of course this would never happen and would still be problematic but it's an interesting thought how this would change Africa as a whole.

Diversity can lead to conflict, but it is not sufficient for it. Socioeconomic divisions among ethnic/religious groups are what leads to radicalization and conflict (in Nigeria’s case, the wealthy south being enriched by its access to oil and the corrupt political system causes impoverishment and resentment in the northern regions). In a developed country like those in Europe or North America, equitable and just societal systems can lead to diversity without conflict.
