One of my favorite all time tuba players. His tone quality, technique and musicianship is unmatched. Used to like to listen to him in the LSO! Sorry we lost him too soon. RIP Mr. Fletcher
I have always loved John's playing. this recording sometimes makes it hard to appreciate his sound, but make no mistake this man could play with probably one of the nicest tuba sounds of the time. I am also very impressed at his ability to project with a small Eb tuba with a brass band accompaniment. most players would play this on a CC tuba nowadays.
Brandon Bruce it's because og this horrible recording. You can hear that the sound in general is thin, zero overtones, crisp sound etc. Even at the 2. movement during the fff, you can't even hear Fletcher. It's not the players fault. Only the recording.
@@ransome51 I agree with the performance being excellent. John Fletcher was an amazing tubist. However the recording is not. No matter what you listen on. You can barely hear him in the ff parts. Sorry to say.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the recording. Must be peoples equipment. As for Johns sound it's superb.. Have a listen to any PJBA and you won't hear better. I listened to John live and as a EEb tuba player myself was in awe of the man.
Recorded on July 19 1980 but the ‘copyright’ date on the sleeve is 1982. - Recorded at Whitworth Hall along with the Horn Concerto (Ifor James on French Horn and playing another Edward Gregson composition) and Rhapsody for Cornet (played by James Watson) - all conducted by Roy Newsome with Besses o’ th’ Barn Band and released by Chandon on “20th Century Soloists” and rereleased as “Concertos for Brass” in 1982
