Great performance indeed and as of January 2022 Colin is still making great music at Diggle Band in Saddleworth . I'm sure I heard that the solo was written for Peter Wells , former solo Eb bass at Black Dyke when Roy Newsome was their musical director . Thanks again for another upload . Mark .
Great to hear this after so many years.Roy composed this when there was'nt a lot for Tuba in the concert repertoire.I remember playing it at PontinsHemsby.We were honoured to give a concert(Cawston Nfk)& as Roy was there he was asked to conduct.A real honour for me,I could not believe he just said do whatever you do & I'll follow you.I think I done OK.I dont think I'd have the wind now.
I LOVE the EEb tuba! There is a bit of snobbery in the world of tubas (tubae) in which the F tuba is considered by some to be more "dignified", and playing an F tuba implies superior skill. But that is beginning to fade away, and lotsa EEb tubas are being used in quintets, sextets, and even orchestras in northern Europe. I have 4 tubas - EEb, a couple of CC's, and a BBb. If I buy another tuba, it'll be either an EEb, or if I can get big money, I'll have an EEEb monster built.
A few decades ago, I encountered in a novelty store, a product named "Tuba Toothpaste". It was a tube of toothpaste, shaped like a "tuba". The main reservoir of toothpaste was in the bell throat, and the toothpaste squirted outta the "mouthpiece" when the bell throat was squeezed. I haven't seen any of that for a long time.
Wonderful sound from a class player, I played next to Colin at Diggle Band what a great player and a real gentleman. A true bandsman . Not a bad team backing him though JSVB.
I love playing this piece. Have done it on sousaphone, single and double B & E Flat tubas (besson ) and for the lols on Eb Baritone Sax and euphonium. Yes i'm one of them (bridged the gap brass & reed when I was younger). Was oringally a brass player became a principle Euphonium player. My love of the tenor sax got me to learn it on the side to the dismay of a few people, who said both couldnt be done ...3 years later I proved them wrong :) now playing approx. 30 years Have travelled with several bands and done marching, concert and competition gigs and events.

Reminiscing. I played this when I was in 16 in my high school band. Being female, probably fairly unique in that. Loved it though.

Same here, I started on alto sax and now I also play tuba very well. People are often surprised but its not too hard of you practice a lot.

Is it just my ears or is there an electric bass guitar in this recording. I think I can hear fingers sliding on strings in some of the passages.
It sounds like an upright, I can hear the plucking
I suppose they had to have someone put the "tutti" bass parts from the original score in! ;-)
