This is the video that got me to go and get a Paraphonic 505, over six years ago. It's been a love affair ever since. Thank you, Tim, for your beautiful and stunning demonstration of the magic of the 505.
i just saw it and, well, now i'm stuck with the prospect of planning to get one as well 🙈😄...i have Juno-6, JX-10, JP-8000 but this is something else...wonderful use of effects 👌🏻
There is no other youtube video, with such a beautiful played analog synthesizer, which catches me like yours every time i play it, stunning emotional! 🙏🏻❤
It's amazing how, because of technical limitations, manufacturers of the 1970s worked around those limitations, and ended up with such a rich, moving sound.
@@dinorocker8647 That's perhaps a bit too broad. I'd love to get my hands on a Novation Summit or a Waldorf Quantum, for example. And let's not forget how brittle these vintage instruments are.
Well I prefer more of the vintage re imaginings of these vintage synths that have the look and sound of that era but have better components that'll last longer.@@SeverityOne
Have to make a second comment This guy is a genious. I have seen many demos of the paraphonic 505. But nobody knows better than him how to use it. Congratulations
Paraphonic 505 was my first synth in 1978 and I always loved the sound, later got a VP330 with a similar sound, vocoder added. Roland chorus really sparkles on both. The divide down technology gives it a great character, somewhere between an organ and a synth. Inspiration to put it through the strymon. Still a great sound and rare ancient synth. You do it justice, nice work.
Hi Sam, I hadn't heard of divide down technology before so I've been reading up on it. Interesting ... I wonder if that's why some paraphonic machines have a kind of 'volume stealing that happens when playing large chords, or spreads. It's actually nice though and kind of glues the instruments together, giving it a self-contained character. Thanks for commenting :)
@@TimOliver Yeah Tim, the old paraphonics were totally polyphonic like an organ or EP. It was the only way to cost effectively get envelop control on a polyphonic synth back in the day until the Prophet 5 showed them the way. The popular ones were the 505, Solina/String Ensemble and ARP OMNI as I remember but there were a bunch that were fully polyphonic, every key made a sound - Elka, Korg, Logan, and Hohner all had a verson, mostly string machines. Perhaps there was power fluctuations causing the fall off you hear - more keys, more draw down. But these old keyboards had character and fully polyphonic not like some of the new "paraphonics" the Pro2 and Sub37 that only divide down to 4 voices or only 2 in the sub.
Amazing composition and fantastic strings, the Roland RS-505 sounds so full and lush. Beautiful ambient soundscape... took me on a journey beyond. Thanks for this great piece, well done.
My mission in life is to listen to and play the fattest pwm and sawtooth pads possible. I think you out-Vangelis'd Vangelis. WOW! I can't believe you got this sound out of that single paraphonic synth. Great work.
Thanks so much. That’s a great mission :) It’s a magic combination of modulations - the built in ensemble effect (from the dimension D), the wow & flutter delay repeats on the El Capistan, and finally the modulated tail on the Valhalla Vintage Reverb.
I find myself coming back to this to admire the gorgeous sound of rs505 and that legendary low end... Great job on the composition too, it feels so comfortable to drown in that ocean of sound.
Excelent performance! I agree with Mr. Eli. This is the best TH-cam demonstration of keyboard+fx+best knowledge. Vangelis trick was Yamaha CS80+Lexicon 480L Congratulations!
IM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS ........ A REALLY UNDERRATED SYNTH.... BEAUTIFULLY PLAYED.... JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND BE SENT ON A JOURNEY......WELL PLAYED SIR
I can't get enough of it, and I love the AIR that comes out of my subwoofer when the bass notes kick in! I can feel it in my reclinerrrr!!😆😆😆.. I have gotten stoned to this many times as well with very fine weed..
I smoked weed back in the 80's and listened to some music. I heard things I never heard before and the music sounded one hundred times better and like I was there with them. The tune totally rocks.
I hope you know I've probably watched this video more than any other on TH-cam (that might be an exaggeration). Such a great keyboard! Such a huge sound! I like your chord progressions, too -- someday a musicologist will do a study of 80s chord progressions and explain what makes them sound so great, and why so many of them were in minor keys.
I always bawl like a big baby at the end where Rutger Hauer's character dies. He accepts that his end is nigh and stops trying to kill Deckard. He just talks about what he has seen in his life. Then he releases the bird as he dies in the rain. So sad and symbolic. Gets me every time. Tears in my eyes now just thinking of it. Nice demo. Thanks!
Thanks Gerald, yeah he used a CS80 for a lot of stuff in Blade Runner. For the strings though he used a Roland VP330 - a very close relation of this keyboard . It has no bass section (which is killer on this), but the added benefit of a choir sound which you hear layered into it. Very distinctive.
The emotions from this sound like the solina and others, is sometimes too much to bear, it is the fabric of music that is timeless. Analog power is insane. The circuitry in this keyboard is the dna of voyager thru space, through a time when electronics was nature incarnate, before digitalness and after the tube universe. Jm
A few months ago I saw a demo of a Volca FM and a TC Electronic reverb that costs four times the Volca... Of course, the Volca FM sounded fabulous. ;-)
I have often found vintage gear combined with recent state of the art effects yields formidable results.
This is one of the best demos I have ever heard. I keep coming back and watching it from time to time.
Same here, I also keep returning to hear this demo. Love it …
Same here, every few months.
Me too. This demo demonstrates what synthesizers can do.
Like tears in the rain ❤
I've lost count of the number of times I've come back to this video. Instant serenity. Play this at the UN and we would instantly have world peace.
me too. it's amazing.
Peace 🙏🏻

It’s always nice to get compliments. - but it’s really something to know that it made a difference somehow. Thanks so much x

Well, I would call this performance a real masterpiece. I find myself listening this again and again... 😀👏
Like a flight through a far away gas giant's atmosphere.
Amazing.
I watch this video over and over. Best string machine. Expertly played.
When those low notes hit. Holy shit what a massive wall of sound
The absolute best example I’ve ever heard of what the 505 can do. Bravo!!
I always come back to this video, it just sounds incredibly beautiful...
Utterly gorgeous, especially when those low strings kick in.
You have captured the Vangelis sound perfectly, and your playing is brilliant
I come back to this again and again - this is truly beautiful and leaves me only wanting more, MORE ! MORE !!!

@@L31PZ1G thanks so much 🙏
More bands or artists that sound like this? It makes me feel like I'm back home...somewhere safe, somewhere majestic...
Vangelis. It's right there in the title.
Some Tomita pieces have a bit of this feel like on the LP Snowflakes Are Dancing
This is absolutely incredible. It’s like sonic transcendence . You two are one.
Sonic transcendence. I love that !
I must have played this a thousand times over and over, it is a stunningly beautiful demo of a fantastic instrument, thanks for posting.
It's amazing how, because of technical limitations, manufacturers of the 1970s worked around those limitations, and ended up with such a rich, moving sound.
It's disgusting how these early analog synth's sound better than the modern electronic instruments today.

Wow! I haven't had goosebumps in a long while. Sublime.
They came with the bass.
Exactly how i felt!
This is the best demo I've seen of this synth, the track is stunning, full of feeling....awesome sound.
Love it when the bass comes in. Epic.
Have to make a second comment
This guy is a genious. I have seen many demos of the paraphonic 505. But nobody knows better than him how to use it. Congratulations
this video literally drove the price up on the paraphonic 505 ....breathtaking

Goosebump moment! Beautiful piece.
Wow! This is a great pedal effect!

Such a nostalgic sound! Enjoyed this.
Brilliant. The intro and beyond are amazing 🎶
That pad is so dreamy and it just relaxes you.
Really enjoyed this thanks Tim.
Wow, I'm suddenly obsessing about string machines and just watched your video! Fantastic.
The piece is beautiful, and you have a great control of the instrument. Great video, thnx
I love synthetic strings and this is the best string synth sound I've ever heard, even better than Tomita's (always love his too tho)
High praise, thanks so much !
It's magnificent, really.
You're welcome. I hope you post more like this.

valhalla is such a great name for a reverb co. sounds amazing

El Capistan is one of the greatest pedals around, and one of my favorites!
Absolutely epic. Just lost myself in a different universe. Speechless...
beautiful
What a sound shower - incredible! That bass is killing me - I instantly stopped working and put Blade Runner on :-)
'sound shower' .. nice !
Best 4.43 mins EVER!!! ;-)
the very organic sound goes very well with the capistan. Polyphony is Beauty. Nice!
Absolutely awesome! Time for me to get a few Valhalla reverb plugins as I am always chasing the classic Vangelis huge reverb sound.
Check out Shimmer, which is what I think I used on this.
What a gorgeous sounding instrument and you have the right touch 👍👍
0:48 = 2 sec before the most important button on this BEAST does his thing !
awesome vid i have roland jupiter 4 and 505 both beastly machines massive sounds
By far the best TH-cam demo for this wonderful synth. I have a VP330 but this is magic too

Fantastic Tim. Really inspiring and emotional texture and tone!

Fantastic sounds !

Great sound. Brilliant.
Can we have some more.

The reverb does a lot of the work.

I totally agree, but the RS-505 remains an incredible string synth. Let's say they go very well together.
