The Cold War was a real life or death struggle, and it wasn't really all that cold. This gentleman was obviously an unwitting asset of British intelligence. Maybe that's why there were so many informants around him. Also, imagine being a war-torn impoverished country trying to take on the relatively new and monumental task of constructing socialism and then having the entire might of the West arrayed against you. It doesn't absolve the communists of all their mistakes, corruption, and yes, even crimes, but it does put things in perspective.
Same, I listened to both episodes twice, Mr Mackay is, like most Scotsmen, a great raconteur, kinda good timing because of the controversial Romanian elections!
