Used to see them all regularly, flying right over my house as a child, usually in a triangle formation, vulcans literally blocking out the sun. Have never forgotten the sight or the sounds. Living in Bomber County as a child, in between the flight lines of four famous airbases and squadrons had it's advantages, even though my mother used to deplore them for the noise !! Thank you for sharing. ♥️
An exceptionally well produced documentary, clear, concise and some great visuals. Proud to have been associated with the Victor, my father having been on the first squadron in service at RAF Cottesmore in 1957, whilst I was in training to follow in his footsteps. Last four years of my time at was Wyton with Victors, which took part in the 1969 Daily Mail Air Race, London to New York, based at Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn. One of the squadrons aircraft, XM715, not only later assisted in the Vulcan bomb run on the Falklands, but became the last Victor to take flight (inadvertantly) in 2009 at Bruntingthorpe. Another of the squadrons aircraft is on display at Cosford.
Amazing technology and aircraft for the time. I remember as a teenager at the time the cold War was a frightening experience but we had to live with it and to a certain degree still do . Brilliant video brought back a lot of memories some not nice. Many thanks.
I'm originally from Newark-upon-Trent I now live in Bristol. I know some of the staff from Filton . It's brilliant to sit with them, listening to all their story's about working on them ..
I met Doughie Godfrey many years ago as part of the 603 club. Wonderful to hear his full interview here, the only version I've heard before is clearly an edit. Also met Bob Pogson the AEO at the same time who told me about doing loops at Farnborough. Incredible chaps.
For anyone that doesnt know, the Victor's bomb bay was HUGE and was actually larger than the B-52's!. I love the Vulcan but we should have gone with the Valiant B2
Excellent, although some of the American pronunciation is slightly wrong to U.K. ears.. example being the Avon engine, it’s actually pronounced after a river and county in England. So it’s not AVonn but Aivon.. like the beginning of aircraft ..other engines at the time were named after rivers, Trent and Nene.. don’t even get us started on how to pronounce the last one .. as depending on whether you are Northampton or Peterborough the pronunciation changes (normally changes at a place called Oundle.. one side is nen.. the other side neeen and at no point is it pronounced nene)
Yup, originally the expectation was that its speed would be enough and the photo recon versions never carried armaments. When they realised just how good the mossie was, they added machine guns, cannons and eventually a big gun (57mm).
@@familyhelpdeskhelpdesk270 Geoffrey de Havilland knew it would made a devastating gun platform and although the prototype funding was for a PR aircraft, provision for cannon and mg's had been worked into the nose design.

Loved the Vulcan which flew from our local airfield regularly testing the Olympus for the Concord then being developed.
I remember sitting in the primary school playground in RAF Gaydon in 1976 when a Vulcan did a bank over us, very very impressive

The Vulcan, like the XB-70 and the SR-71, was so far ahead of its time it still looks completely modern
