  • At the 2022 BMW Championship, Jordan Spieth and his caddie, Michael Greller, find themselves in a tough situation in a bunker on the par-4 5th hole. After an in-depth conversation about what shot to play, Spieth decides to go for the green and mis-hits it into the water. He would go on to make double bogey on the hole.

The PGA TOUR heads to Delaware for the first time, as the BMW Championship tees off at Wilmington Country Club. 70 of golf’s biggest stars will continue their quest for the FedExCup including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Patrick Cantlay, The Open and THE PLAYERS winner Cameron Smith and Sam Burns and Xander Schauffele, who each have three wins this season. Scheffler, who entered the Playoffs at No. 1 in the FedExCup, is coming off a missed cut at the FedEx St. Jude Championship - just his fourth of the season. Other notables looking to bounce back after a missed cut in Memphis are past FedExCup winners Rory McIlroy, who won in 2016 and 2019, and Jordan Spieth, who won in 2015. The automatic qualifiers for the Presidents Cup teams will be determined after the tournament, with six Americans and eight international players securing spots on their respective teams. Only the top 30 in the FedExCup Standings will make it to the TOUR Championship at East Lake, and unlike the FedEx St. Jude Championship, there is no cut at the BMW Championship.

I don’t see an issue with this. At the end of the day, a player needs to be confident in what they’re doing. He was wrong and should’ve just played the conservative shot, but it’s what he wanted.

I don't think their is an "issue", but for sure Spieth had a perceived self bias how he was going to play the shot. And that bias clouded his memory to think clearly. You are looking at a high percentage up and down compared to a low percentage shot for nearly the same result.

It was a dumb shot for a pro though, because it is the sort of thing we amateurs do all the time. Really tough to pick a bunker shot clean off an upslope like that. You have to get your shoulders aligned with the upslope perfectly, you can see he doesn't do that and takes too much sand. It is also a shot that you don't practice that much. Calling that type of shot is the difference between a 12 handicap and a 5 handicap, he should be well past that as a pro.

I said which bunker (there was not a bunker greenside on that hole). He said the bunker that’s short right. It was a bunker 50 yards short of the green. I wanted to tell him. Buddy if you hit it in that bunker from 150 we’ve got problems. Haha.

On a recent game with a mate I ended up pin high but right of the green behind a whole pile of felled trees with full overhead cover of trees. I told my mate if I can just get it over the pile I should be close to hitting the green. He recommended I just play backwards onto the fairway, Well I fated it into the pile of felled trees swore, took a drop that eliminated my safe fairway shot so had to go for it, I ended up within 6 foot of the flag and we both just laughed and laughed. What a wonderful game we play

It sounded like Jordan's logic was he'd either hit it flush or hit it so badly it couldn't reach the water. He left out the more likely possibility between the two extremes of mis-hitting it just enough for it to get wet. Not that pointing that out to him in the moment would've had any influence on his thinking. He was in "yeah but" mode.

nothing major , stand on your nuts and hit the shot. the layup shot had the potential of being played poorly too

No gamble, no glory...... He took the most aggressive route in a risk vs. reward next to impossible shot. If he makes it he looks like Phil Mickelson when he's hot or like Jean van de Velde (the player who had a 3 shot lead at the 1999 British Open on the 18th hole and lost in grand fashion.)
All that matters is he took the caddies take under advisement but chose the aggressive route, and absolutely owned it when it didn't pan out for him. I see nothing wrong with how it played out.

I think he's trying to make a golf swing like cameron smith, he's ultra dooshy with his consistent chat, being his caddy would be a really annoying job, like babysitting an annoying kid..

At this point Jordan's game is non-existent. He is falling like a rock in world rankings and unless he figures his game out he has become a mediocre pro golfer.

This is why he doesn't have more wins. It's equal to a quarterback throwing it out of bounds vs trying to make the play, it's always better to play it safe unless your that good and he isn't.

this is spot on. After the meltdown in 2016 at the masters he has done this time and time again. He thinks more analytics the better off he is. Just look at his swing, complete opposite of natural
