- While semi or full water culture might work for some types of orchids, it's generally not recommended for Phalaenopsis orchids due to their specific physiological and ecological requirements. Here's why:
Root Rot: Phalaenopsis orchids are susceptible to root rot when their roots are constantly submerged in water. Semi or full water culture can lead to waterlogged conditions, depriving the roots of oxygen and encouraging the growth of harmful pathogens like fungi and bacteria.
Aerial Roots: Phalaenopsis orchids have aerial roots that are adapted to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. Submerging these roots in water can suffocate them and hinder their natural functions.
Adaptation: Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytic plants, meaning they naturally grow on tree branches or other structures, where their roots are exposed to air and able to dry out between waterings. Mimicking these natural conditions by using a well-draining orchid potting mix allows for better air circulation and prevents waterlogging.
Nutrient Uptake: Orchids, including Phalaenopsis, have specific nutrient requirements. While some nutrients can be absorbed through water, others are best absorbed through the potting medium. Using a balanced orchid fertilizer and a suitable potting mix ensures that the plant receives the nutrients it needs for healthy growth.
Stability: Phalaenopsis orchids prefer stable conditions. Constantly changing water levels or water quality in a semi or full water culture setup can stress the plant and lead to issues like leaf yellowing, wilting, or stunted growth.
Overall, while experimenting with different cultivation methods can be interesting, it's essential to consider the specific needs of each plant species. For Phalaenopsis orchids, providing a well-draining potting mix, adequate air circulation, and proper watering techniques will generally lead to healthier and more robust plants.

Hello, I have been growing quite a few of my orchids in LECA or PON in self watering pots for about the last 4 years, this includes phals, dens and 2 catts. I am sure this is not for everyone but I find it clear and more economical not having to constantly purchase bark, moss, charcoal, etc. I don't think I would try the total water culture, not for me. But I do enjoy growing the majority of my orchids in self water, I treat them as if they are in bark, moss mix, I keep a small amount of fertilizer in their pots and give them a good flush about every 60 days. They are growing very well and have bloomed for me consistently. :)
yes and sometimes finding the right quality of bark is difficult so inorganic media can be a blessing that way 💯I sometimes use LECA with charcoal but I add some sphagnum moss to hold moisture and it takes ages to decompose so the mix lasts for a very long time .. and self watering can take the stress when wanting to go on holiday away 💕
After more than a year of no growth, I turned to water culture for some of my struggling, troubled phals. But not until I educated myself about the different methods, pros and cons, etc. Thankfully, I can say It was the right decision for them. There was a time of transition, w/o a doubt, and it has been a journey for me as well as them, lol, but so far, I am pleasantly surprised how well it has gone. I am happy w the results, overall. But it's always in the back of my mind that I may have to go back to a standard media at some point in the future. Water culture is not for the faint of heart, LOL or those who are just starting out growing orchids. I appreciate your candid approach to discussing water culture. You have to be in it for the Long Haul, that's for sure! 😊😊😊
for sure it can be a difficult thing to get right and keep right . Your patience and skill is commendable 😍I have a very sad history with trying 🤣
Hi, the buddha statues are gorgeous, like them so much👍👍👍
Thank you! 🫂💕
A bubbler in the water reservoir, maybe on a timer, could fix some of the problems by getting more oxygen to the roots, but it would also make the setup even more complicated.
for sure then it is making far more work instead of less ... 😉
Very beutiful information my friend
💕 Terima kasih .. dah cuba ke belum ? Saya tidak mempunyai apa-apa nasib sama sekali dengannya
Thx
❤👍

Me throwing my orchids on top of lava rocks in my aquarium, not caring for them for months now:
🤷♀🤞
