You Won't Believe the Orchid Displays at Ten Shin Gardens
At the South African National Orchid Show, we had the pleasure of speaking with **Matthew from Ten Shin Gardens**, who traveled from Taiwan to showcase his stunning orchids. Interestingly, Matthew shared that his favorite orchids are African species, which he actively collects, highlighting a fascinating cross-continental appreciation of floral beauty. We took an up-close look at his impressive display, which featured meticulously cultivated plants that stood out among the competition.
We also explored **Plantae Orchids**, whose remarkable collection included an array of **Dendrobiums** and **Oncidiums**, alongside several rare plants that caught our attention. Their vibrant selection was a hit at the show, showcasing the diversity of the orchid family.
Finally, we had a quick but insightful chat with **Nico from Kinley Gardens**, where he introduced us to the stunning **Blue Vanda 'Pachara Delight'**-a showstopper on display. Nico's exhibit featured an exquisite selection of orchids that demonstrated the skill and passion involved in orchid cultivation. Each orchid had its own unique charm, leaving an indelible impression on everyone who stopped by.
Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes coverage as we delve into the fascinating world of orchids!

Do the ants cause a problem to the orchid>?
they can bring in bugs like scale and aphids but some protect your plants lol
Stunning.
there were some really beautiful things
OHHH variegated cymbidium that's beautiful, when it's not in bloom it could pass as a spider plant hahahaha 😂😂
Yes, you are right it really could lol win win
Such nice orchids ❤
they really were thanks
Wow! Such beautiful orchids! And what did you buy to take home, Peter?😊😁😊
we are getting ourselves ready to travel and bring you all along with us to see all the orchids the world has to offer , so no more buying yet lol
Is there any possibility to differentiate between black rot and this calcium deficiency. Thank you!
black rot will often appear in different areas of the plant like for instance in the middle of a leaf but calcium deficiency is only really as discussed . Also the dying tissue from calcium deficiency can get black rot .
How many would you buy 😍😍
I buy nil😢
I’d buy one of each plus backups🤣
all of them lol
make friends with someone who did buy and you can swap cutting lol
🤣 I like your thinking 🤣
Are these in the rare list? I’ve never seen them before.
no I dont think so , they just not in every ones collection because they don't have those big showy flowers , although to me these are just as beautiful 😍
So beautiful! Wish I can get my hands on them.
just seeing these make me excited for the trip to the Himalayas to see the growers there
@@thenaturecompany wow just the sound of “going to the Himalayas” gets me excited for you! Can’t wait for you to go so you can share your experiences😍
we are so looking forward to this , we have saved up now just fingers crossed all things come together right
I am after this plant..if U have seed for this..reach out. Let's swap
this is not my plant , I wish it was lol 😁
What show is this at? Do you have anything entered?
The South African National Orchid show run but the SAOC and local Orchid Societies , Highway , Natal and Pietermaritzburg .
That purple and white... was that not called a Splish splash at 1 stage ?
the only Splish Splash I know is one of the spotted Cat.s
Putting S.A. on the map! Thanks for sharing! ❤
You bet! lol . We have some great growers here too
True ❤@@thenaturecompany
The colors are so pretty! Is it fragrant too?
very , the whole area was like a perfume factory with all these Cat.s around lol
I so love cacti and succulents but unfortunately they don't like me..😢 I guess I'll just have to continue to live vicariously in this area through your channel..❤
😘for sure some times the light and the watering can be a little difficult
They certainly do have there own characteristics...love love ❤️
for sure and those tall flower spikes holding them up for us to admire 😉😁💕
😍
we need bigger growing areas , am I right lol
I wish. I don’t even see them around here.
Soo beautiful ...
I wish I was better at growing them , but now I just leave them to the Paph experts
Wow wow wow!! They grow that big ? ❤
they certainly do .. they are just mind bending 😍
Such pretty blooms! One of my Nobiles new canes got huge this summer! I hope that will be a good sign for the spring.😊
I hope so too! It is always exciting when we see these good signs 😍🫂
That’s a big one!😮❤💯👍🪴🤗
it was huge , I can see why they gave it the award
Such beauties
they make us want to do better for our orchids lol
A well-deserved award. It must be a pride and joy for the owner😍
if I could run fast enough it would have gone into my bag 🤣
🤣
Wow!😮 😮

@@thenaturecompanybeautiful plant
it really is a stunner 😍
So pretty!😮😊
we all need these in our lives right 😉
❤👍
ďakujem 🫂vždy si vážim, že ste sa zastavili 😍
Lovely orchids... thank you for bringing us along. Have a great week ahead!
Thank you! You too! nice misty rain , just right for the orchids today , so life is good 😘
Don’t use this in the sun, it will mess with your leaves. Use early like 5:30 am or like 4 pm when the sun is going down. Read the instructions well.
yes I should have put the disclaimer on this but as I am spraying on a Cattleya these are obviously not kept in the full sun , I just needed to film the process in the sun or it is too dark to film . 👍
This is the same fungi, it’s just two different stages. Please read St. Augustine Orchid Society. They have lots of information on fungi, bacteria, etc.
The St. Augustine Orchid Society has some wonderful articles but have been terribly misled with that one here is an in depth video on the truth about these two different fungal pathogens : th-cam.com/video/cE4iVG30OIY/w-d-xo.html
It can be the fluoride in your water too if using municipality water ie tap water. If you think this might be the issue - Try to use rain captured on a tarp directed into a trashcan and then treat the water with Summit’s natural BT which kills the mosquito larvae. Also fungus gnats. The amount is dependent on the size of the can ie not the number of gallons. I use 1/2 of one of the donut shaped units per month and then put another one in. I use this water to water the orchids all the way through the bark. The can is protected by a tilting umbrella so it stays darker… use a dark can so no algae. And every rain just let it overflow so it stays fresh. If you want you can put a large aquarium oxygenator with multiple stones or one long one. I do this on the deck and take the pump in or move it under your porch. You can’t leave the pump outside in bad weather. In my area the water gets very cold, might not freeze solid but way too cold, so I get up multiple 1 gallon jugs and bring in to come to room temp. You can do this in the summer and in,the winter use distilled water. But distilled water will need secondary and trace elements as it has nothing. I mentioned before First Rays (not affiliated etc) but I like it because it has NPK of 12-1-1, 10% calcium, and 3% magnesium and all the trace elements. It just makes it easy. And the plastic can tells you how much to use whether you want to mix by the gallon or ppms. They do recommend you use pure water ie distilled or rain water, or RO with this.
great advice thank you for sharing 😍👌
The experts say that about phalaenopsis orchids. Their roots do help with photosynthesis. But my big deal with clear pots for them or with a plant that really wants to stay damp or really dry. It helps you view the roots. Phals unlike cattleya or Vanda which want harder drys mean white/silver roots before rewatering. But phals want to be watered right as the roots reach a silvery green color or a greenish silver whatever you want to call it. It’s not dark green which still has plenty of moisture, and it’s not silver white ie with no greenish color. When the phal roots which typically grow towards the outside of the pot and thus you will be able to see them- when they turn pale green, then water them well. Or water and fertilize well. If potted in sphagnum, be very careful because the center of the media might still be damp especially if you didn’t repot it when you received it and got rid of the plug from first seedling. Sometimes those can cause rot in the center if too wet. Don’t repot until the phal has finished blooming. And hopefully you have been feeding it a good fertilizer with NPK, secondary elements calcium, magnesium and all the trace elements it needs. They need more than just NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium). I might suggest from First Rays K-Lite fertilizer NPK= 12-1-1, 10% calcium, 3% magnesium, and all the trace. I alternate it with Better Grow for orchids every other week or 2 treatments a month to give more potassium and phosphorus to help with root growth and blooming. In the summer I treat my Vanda daily with 25-50 ppms. It tells you how much to use to reach the ppms you want. My Vanda (hanging on wire some with original baskets). I treat every morning through early summer and early evening in like July/August so in the heat it has more time to absorb the fertilizer. My cattleya I do once a week with 50 ppms. Vanda are heavy feeders ie more times, not more strength. They get twice watering every day most of the summer. But in July/August they need 3 waterings. In winter it’s 1 maybe twice a day, depends on your environment. You have to consider your environment and how they are potted, and in what.
Yes as a horticulturist and having owned and run a commercial orchid nursery for nearing on 20 years I understand what they say about the roots and their photosynthesis and have done a full video on this : th-cam.com/video/auW9bpe6jkQ/w-d-xo.html . It is wonderful to hear how you look after your orchids , it is wonderful for everyone to read and know how others look after their orchids so we all learn together , no matter how much we know there is always more to learn 💯🫂
Gorgeous. It would be nice if you told us the plant’s name. Really don’t care about the music. But do the plant ie especially the orchids.. the variety etc.
sometimes we just do a quick video of what is in flower in the garden and load it up but should really take more time to add the names in the description . Thanks
Wow! Be nice to them, put up owl houses, they will rid your property of rodents.
yes indeed , we are lucky enough to be on the edge of a nature area so we have all the amazing wildlife 😍
Spray with Orthene which is a systemic and contact too. Soak the media, or just as you have it fresh out of the pot.
Orthene is a dangerous chemical and we do our best to be as organic as possible and the damage it can cause to the environment and the person using it is unacceptable to me , I would rather deal with a few ants , but thanks for your advice I am sure others will find it helpful 👍
So you will kill the tree so you don’t waste some garden twine or raffia to wrap around which you only need until the roots hook on to the tree.
😉 hahaha this in no way will kill the tree lol , the tacks are generally removed once the orchid is rooted on
Which videos show the progression? I would maybe spray with alcohol and let it evaporate - as it would kill bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc. and let it dry as a primary or secondary step. Hydrogen peroxide doesn’t kill everything. I might have boiled the water and let it cool. Then add The roots aren’t coming from the end, they will come from the stem inbetween the leaves.
th-cam.com/video/SHgsoI_Zsc4/w-d-xo.html here is the result video. Thanks for watching
Thoroughly enjoyed every moment! 😊🎉 They're all so beautiful.. thank you so much! Loved the cymbidiums.. hoping I'll find some warm growers for my growing conditions. Really looking forward to the next episode ❤
Thank you 🫂 every time I look at one orchid that is my favourite until I look at the next one 🤣
Stunning cymbidiums!
the colour are more intense in real life , can you choose a fav ? 😁
I've bought a Rechg. Chichiriviche sunset. Do you have any info on them for a tutuorial please????
where did you find one of these ? I dont have any to use as a sample , but I would give them higher light than my RLC but not full sun like the Laelia undulata will take , the rest I would look after like most other Cattleya 👍
I would like to get a better look at the whole show and the prize winners too of course.
this is just the first video on the show th-cam.com/video/CjQQa4GISck/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tPVtRbKSE_4yZaZV more to come 👌
Did you enter any plants in the show?
I am not a part of any of the Societies , previously we were working 7 days a week running the orchid nursery we never had time so now we do I should 👍
I love these plants so much thank you
it is a pleasure to share our passion with you , thank you for joining us on this journey . We really appreciate all your feed back 😍🫂
Ever considered taking on the judging course? There is a judging handbook with all the criteria to memories and also practise. That was part of my training.
I have considered it , it is only now that I have the time to actually take to do it . I will take a look into doing it thanks for the nudge 😘🫂
@@thenaturecompany U r welcome

The Cattleyas are by far the best.

🎉🎉what an amazing show. I think everyone who participated had a blast🎉🎉🎉. We also shopped an amazing group of ppl under 1 roof. ❤😊
yes it was a wonderful place to meet old friends and make some new ones too 💕
22:52 This Oncidium is my favorite. I don't have any in my collection yet but I'm doing pretty well with the coconut orchid. Lots of orchids that I've never seen before. 25:41 I bought two of the Mendenhalls recently. I just have to wait for new roots before repotting.
The colours on this are truly stunning , if your coconut orchid is growing well then this Oncidiums should do well too , their growing conditions are fairly similar 👍 My mariposa flowers were a bit small this year , probably also time for me to repot too, thanks for reminding me 😉I should check now to see if the new root are coming
such beautiful orchids thanx
Thanks for visiting
these are so pretty
