This is typical Singaporean mentality that HK/Shenzhen is like SG/JB. That might be the case 10-15 years ago. But now shenzhen has gone way beyond cost advantage, its GDP has surpassed HK with more high tech industries and service offerings. JB is nowhere near a good comparison.
i'm a Malaysian working in Shenzhen coming the 10th year. Almost everyday i drive past the Futian Custom, for the past 2 years, even working days, uncles and aunties are flocking in with their luggages, enjoying shopping and eating in Shenzhen. Hong Kong has a similar problem to New York, where commercial property owners prefer to keep units empty rather than lower rents due to complicated financial gymnastics reasons. In simple terms, the fact that the previous rent was high looks better on the books. They’d lose a lot of leverage if they lower the rent. It’s really messed up.

If you want a wider variety of good Chinese cuisine for excellent value, you go to SZ. But for anything else that's not Chinese food, HK is still far better for those. Personally, SZ doesn't have better steakhouses(including South American), Mexican, burgers, Indian, South East Asian(restaurants and fast-food), Korean, Japanese, Middle Eastern, different cuisines from Europe, etc...not even close
The HK government and HKers should realize that the current purchasing power disparity is economically unsustainable in the long term. HK restaurants, stores, and other businesses will close, HK wages will need to decrease, office building vacancies will increase, HKers moving and/or retiring in GD. When the HK government no longer has the money (generated by land sales which will decline - diminishing land availability and no tax base) to keep the HK currency pegged to the US dollar, the HK purchasing power will decline. Can’t continue to “have a cake and eat it too.”
As a cantonese I've never have grievance against Hong Kong ppl even during couple of years ago they called us the 'locusts' , I can understand their grievances and anger and I've never have resentment to them, we share the same land of Guandong, and we have the same/similar cantonese culture, I view them as our own brothers and sisters.
