      It's funny, but as chairs have become less likely to injure us over time, it's made this far harder. A symptom of an insufficiently optimistic future for back support, but a wonderful element for a performance to bring to the character

      You can see how it actually works well for a show too; the way he mounts the back means he never dips his head down in the prepatory motion people make when they sit down. He just smoothly glides into position. You can see how in the close-up where he's at the display with the ferengi how the camera has such an easy time following him as he does it.

    apparently he did this cause he had a back injury that made it painful to sit in a normal way when they had to do a lot of takes. same reason he would tend to lean on things if other characters were standing. its cool that it became iconic

      can confirm, eye contact ensures effectiveness, however once the maneuver has been perfected, eyes can only be averted if you are executing in front of a relationship interest.
      interesting that the only cases where Riker has performed the no-look maneuver, have been with both female and male audience, confirming that Riker is indeed our bisexual icon, or as the deeply Picard facepalm maneuver deserving people insist, a bicon. XD

    The Riker maneuver was actually down to Jonathan Frakes having a back issue. This also caused him to suffer from prolonged periods of time. Which gave rise to his one sided poses as he displaced weight from one side to another during filming to help with it.

      What's great is it doesn't remotely come off as a move to ease pain, but a swift and effortless piece of acrobatic skill enabled by his height, the equivalent of a guy reaching up to tap a light fixture/doorway as he walks by because he can.

      @@KairuHakubi it’s amazing how things can become both compensation for pain and injury and graceful and confident like that. It blows my mind how our bodies can adapt. I completely destroyed my knees and ankles pushing too far with an undiagnosed connective tissue issue and i can barely keep my balance and hobble around like an 80 year old trying to walk normally but if I can glide on my toes in socks I can move like water. I have a friend who’s an ambulatory wheelchair user, can’t stand upright and still for more than ten seconds without horrible pain, but still dances. The more intensive the compensation the more focus it takes and it can get less efficient but once you learn to feel what your body can do instead of pushing it to do something it can’t anymore, there’s a joy in that movement that’s one hell of a confidence booster ime
      Like fine I can’t do the thing normal so I will fully lean into doing it the weird way until it becomes a signature move
      Idk I think it’s neat

I would know because I was born hard of hearing (deaf in my right ear), but the human body will balance it out and improve the other senses it relies on, in my case mostly sight because I don't need glasses or contacts like most other people in the family do.

    This is actually really smart for characterisation and take consistency. Since he doesn’t pull out the chair it doesn’t have to be repositioned for the next run through the scene.

      +BlakeSmith17 To be fair, low-set chairs would actually somewhat make sense on a federation spaceship for the simple reason that, if the ship should hit something somehow and it manages to rattle the ship itself you won't have very long to fall.
      That or it's just cheaper.

      I just listened to a podcast where they interviewed him and they asked him why he did this. It wasn't a back problem, he says he did it as a joke once because the back of the chair was so low and then it became a running gag for him.
      Podcast is called How To Do Everything the episode is called Batholiths, Milk, and The Full Riker.

    I remember this. That's a part of the craft. When an actor is creating a character he creates those subtle things that project the inner nature of the character. Riker was always boldly confident and a ladies man; essentially a walking erection. So this sort of posturing was an excellent choice by Jonathan Frakes.

    I noticed this, along with Picard constantly adjusting the front of his outfit when sitting or the way Riker tended to move through a door sideways. I just assumed it was because the man is HUGE compared to the cast.
