In playthrough 1 I like to farm the Snagglebeast for experience, just keep taking him down to like 2 percent and then committing checkpoint reload, it's a way to get the less useful weapons upgraded early so you don't have to use them in the rest of the game since at this point they're not very effective against the coming enemies.
