    I just got my Kala KA-S yesterday. I'd been sitting on the fence about what to get but your review was the nudge that pushed me over. I'm so glad I did! My fingers are sore, my hand is cramped, I only know six chords so far but I'm in love. Thank you for your honest opinion in your reviews and not holding the punches back.

    I recently brought myself a Kala KA-15S and I love it to pieces! I has a lovely sound, looks amazing and frequently gets admired by friends and family! It also came with Aquila strings which were properly fitted which made a massive difference to Ukuleles that I have bought previously with rubbishy Nylon strings that aren't properly installed! Kala all the way for me!

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +MushyPeaOC15 you see very little these days now that doesn't come with Aquila strings. The fact that all three were strung with the same strings certainly made my comparison more straightforward. Personally speaking though, I don't actually like Aquila strings!

      +samochodsyrenka I dont tend to give string recommendations as the subject is too personal. What some people like other people dont. It's because all our ukuleles are different, but more importantly all our tastes and playing styles are different. My advice is to try a few different sets and trust your own ears as to what you like best

    I STILL get a chuckle watching you try to hold the 3 little sopranos at 1 time! Those tags flying around.... hilarious fun! Thank you, though, for helping me select a first uke several yrs ago; I've moved on a long way, actually.

    Bought a Kala KA-P last year, almost similar in every way to the Kala KA-S, except for the pineapple shaped body, which I love. And I'm loving it thouroughly. No complaints. Love the warmer and fuller sound of pineapples as compared to the standard one. I would love a review though, between KA-S and KA-P. But pretty redundant it might be. Great review Baz. As always, on point. Thanks!

    Very good review comparing them! I received my ukulele Kala Soprano Exotic Mahogany( Kala SEM) yesterday. And I'm so in love with him! I also have a Mahina MA 21k, which is a Concert ukulele that I love so much! Both sounds very beautiful and the quality and price are excellent!

    I think my Lanikai LU-21 Soprano Ukulele had an intonation problem. I believe all cheap ukulele have this problem.
    Though if you play the 12th fret it is a problem, but not really a problem if you just play chords close to the neck.
    But i did lower the strings using a knife, and sanded down the first 2 frets to stop buzz. It really sounds like a much more expensive ukulele now.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using a knife??? And sanding frets is pretty much last resort !
      (All cheap ukuleles don't have that problem - just those that the brands didn't check properly)

    • @goldenultra
      @goldenultra ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GotAUkulele True, a quality control issue. Used the knife on the nut. But it turned out well.... 😅

    I agree with you...I like the Kala the best for the same reasons you stated! And I own all three of these, the Ohana was my very first ukulele but I never played them side by side...Kala for sure!

  • @johnhmaloney
    @johnhmaloney 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Of the three, I agree that the Kala is a nice balance between the other two. I have a Kala KA-SLNG that I'm very happy with and would definitely recommend. It's a bit more expensive than the KA-S, but I think it sounds a bit better than the KA-S and it has more frets, so I think it's worth it.

    I haven't compared these three but have played the Ohana and compared it to other sopranos. I thought the Ohana had a touch less resonance but sounded great(very comfortable to play also). I thought the Lanikai Sailor Jerry uke was nearly as good as my Cordoba 15CM(close to the same price range), though my Cordoba needed some nut filing that was simple enough to do on my own.
    My assessment is also similar to yours in that they are all fit for a beginning instrument. Just pick the prettiest and most comfortable because it will be played more! BEGINNER ADVICE: have a salesperson try every fret on every string to make sure it won't need a set up(they usually aren't cheap.)

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BuddyJesusSmokes Yeah, they are all passable ukuleles and beginners will do well with any of them. Putting them head to head like this meant I had to dig down to spot the differences. I do think the Kala has it on the tone stakes, but it is close.

    Good thorough review. (I liked the Kala best too.) Unfortunately, all three were out of tune. I hope that this was just because they were new and the strings hadn't got set yet.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No they were all precisely in tune at the nut - I check each ukulele with a strobe tuner before the video. Any issues in tuning you heard (although, I personally didn't - but then some people have more sensitive hearing to dischord) is down to intonation being slightly off with the instrument. I never adjust such things before a review as I want to give a fair representation of the ukulele as it arrived with me - but they are always in tune at the nut.

      I don't have perfect pitch but I can tell they're quite a bit out of tune, probably due to bad intonation.

    I’ve never played anything other than a piano. Recently had a hand surgery and I cannot play the piano in the near future. I’m too intimidated by the guitar and decided to learn ukulele. You hit the nail on the head. I have been struggling between Lanikai and Kala and after watching this I think Kala is the one for me. Thank you for the very helpful video.

    I have been learning the ukelele & have signed up to start some lessons soon in a group. I have one of the cheap Kmise ones I bought a bit naively before really taking an interest, and now that I'm really starting to enjoy it - I am going to invest in something built better and because reviews are often biased or made from folks who haven't played/seen others, it's been difficult. I was really grateful for your review on one of the Luna ukelele earlier, as I feel like I almost fell victim to a brand that does tend to focus on the appearance of the ukelele as apposed to the build quality and sound (not knocking anybody who has a Luna by the way, they are beautiful looking - I just don't want to be another British person paying a huge sum extra, for something I could have gotten much cheaper without all of the prettiness). I think I am sold on a Kala now - every time I have looked at various reviews I end up being directed to Kala. Eventually, I'll probably get more ukeleles but being a beginner I just want to get the *right* one to start up with. :)
    This has been incredibly helpful. Going to look at some Kala's now, and the best bit with those, is I know a few places locally that stock them - so I'll be able to have a look in person if the mood strikes. If I'm still undecided, at least I know I can't go far wrong with the Kala here. Thanks again!
    I started my search hell bent on getting a concert as I like the size - but I'm probably going to settle for a soprano now, possibly a long necked soprano if I can find one I like.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Green Fox Kala are very reliable. I’d urge caution on their long neck soprano though. Very narrow neck which I personally found uncomfortable. See if you can find a Kiwaya long neck sop. Similar price and much better instruments. There’s a review on this channel somewhere

    Maybe it's just my ears, but it seems the intonation Lanikai and the Ohana sounded a bit off to my ears? The Kala sounded like it had better intonation. I've been listening to a lot of Martin Uke videos and the intonation on the ones I've heard sounds so good. Thanks for your videos.

    I by accident came accross a KALA KA-S15 recently and was surprissed by the good sound comming out of such a cheap instrument. I blind tested it against an Islander MS4 and a Grestch soprano and i always end up choosing the Kala. So worth giving a go in my opinion.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah - doesn't surprise me - Kala have been in the game longer than many and have (in my opinion) a better quality control system than most at the cheaper end to. Nice brand. When I set this review up I don't mind admitting that I didn't know which would come out on top.. But I was glad the Kala did. Based on all the other models out there from these three brands, Kala are the one I would recommend more. Ohana close second to be fair.

I did genuinely like the tone of the Kala more though, though I know that is subjective. Even if they all sounded identical, I'd still give it to the Kala for the side fret markers - as I say - small things count at this price!

    Not one of the above, but bought a Flight travel TUS-350R soprano on the strength of one of your reviews and am over the moon with it. It stays in tune, was cheap enough and seems fairly robust. It's often said that the ukulele is an instrument you can play badly very quickly and I'm helping to prove the theory, I'm nearly playing badly already after only a few weeks. ***** So this might be a lot to ask but Im conflicted between 4 ukes.. Kala KA-C concert (105.99), Kala KA-CG concert mahogany (115.99), Luna mo'o concert (99), and the Grace harbor concert 100 (119.99)
      Im seriously considering the Luna mo'o because it sounds like it plays nice, its also the cheapest of the bunch, and it comes with a gig bag plus it looks a bit unique with the tattoo.
      But you also said bad things about a different tattooed luna so Im hesitant to get it even though it has good reviews. What do you think?

    I have a Lanikai LU21 and love it. It's a lovely well made instrument.
    I agree with some comments on here about the tuning. They were all a bit out of tune. A tweak on nut and bridge height setup would sort it. Like me, you may be a little heavy handed on your left hand. (pressing too hard on the string) This can increase exasperation (to some) if the nut slots are not cut deep enough, which pulls the string out of tune, particularly Nylon polymer strings.
    I'm actually considering upgrading my bridge and nut to bone (or synthetic equivelent) and maybe some better quality machine heads.
    I do like the tone of the kala. Could be helped by bridge/nut material.
    A great review! Well done and thank you!

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they were all in tune at the nut. I agree that the nuts were too high on some, but I never review anything other than ‘out of the box’ - it shows people how some ukes can arrive needing work. Besides, the ukes are not mine to meddle with! The point is that the reviews would lose some importance if I set up every instrument optimally. A lot of buyers of these ukes will not get them from a dealer who will set them up, rather places like Amazon. The intonation issues are therefore an accurate representation of what ‘may’ arrive. Some people think I play them without tuning first. Every uke review is tuned at the nut with a highly accurate strobe tuner.

      @@GotAUkulele I understand, respect and appreciate what you are saying and yes, it's good to show what instruments are like when shipped. I was just highlighting a problem and a cure. I have friends who have bought £12 ukes (new, from charity shops) which have had very poor action (high) and I have made them very playable. Another problem I found with my Lanikai and I'm sure it's the same with others, is that new strings need 'playing in', to allow them to stretch and settle.
      What I was trying to say was, with a little work, cheaper instruments can sing in tune.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phillip Green I believe we are agreeing with each other. The main reason I don’t do setups on ukes before review is to show how bad some of them are. So each review has them in tune at nut but some play off. People claim I didn’t tune them, I did and I try to point out in videos or the written reviews if there is a setup reason for them sounding off

      There aren't really any bad strings these days. You need to try a few and go with what your own ears tell you (all our ears and opinions on sound differ). If your uke sounds out of tune it 'could' be the strings, but equally probably more likely it is not set up correctly so the intonation is out.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe they do yes. But seriously - if you are starting out with ukulele you WILL need to change strings. They don't last forever. Consider it like buying a car - you will need to change the tires regularly.

    • @Fisho1997
      @Fisho1997 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GotAUkulele First off, I thank you immensely for taking the time to reply. I already have a Ukulele and can play fairly well, but seeing as I live in Egypt it's extremely difficult to find Ukulele strings and accessories (it's hard to find the Ukuleles themselves). The strings sold here are shite and I want to experience good strings. So if they weren't strung with Aquila strings I'd immediately have to change the strings to Aquila. It would just help me on my budget if I have to buy just one pack of strings (for future use) rather than buying two immediately to swap strings when I first get it. Thank you again, huge fan.

    • @GotAUkulele

    • @Fisho1997
      @Fisho1997 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      GotAUkulele It'll cost me an arm and a leg; my country's economic state and import policies are not in the best shape. (that's an understatement) If I attempt getting a pack of strings for say 7 USD I'll have to pay about 18 more on customs and taxes-not to mention international shipping.(That doesn't sound like much but one USD is equivalent to about 18 Egyptian pounds) It's sad, really. I'm literally one of 5 Ukulele owners in a country where 91 million people live. For future purposes I'll probably have to wait for someone to travel and get me some. :(

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they are ok near the nut but then go out of tune - it's almost certainly down to the saddle being too high. The height of the action is measured at the 12th fret. Measure distance from crown of 12th to the bottom of the strings. Should be just under ⅛ inch and certainly no higher. If it is higher - its throwing out the scale length of the string and ruining the tuning accuracy at the frets. Thankfully it's easily fixed with most ukuleles - you need to sand the base of the saddle piece down a bit. Just dont go too low.

    • @ronatholl493
      @ronatholl493 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for fast reply it looks like my uke hasnt been set up properly when i fret the 8th fret it just sounds flat i think the bridge has been set up too low not really sure the two top strings sound ok

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is unlikely to play out of tune if it's too LOW - (more likely that will just buzz) it's the high action that makes it go out. If the action is low but it is still out - the issue could be more serious - misplaced bridge / mis set fret / mis cut nut. Saying all of that, the first thing I would do is change the strings - bad strings can do this as they develop dead and flat spots. Don't alter anything structural until you put fresh strings on and you are sure the issue is still there.

    • @GotAUkulele

      +SwaggehGamez Intonation being off can either be from things that can be fixed (like adjusting the nut and saddle) or more terminal issues (like a faulty build, mis placed bridge etc). Either way - the ukulele dealers I recommend on my site are the sort that check instruments for these sort of defects before sending them out. Those issues can occur with any ukulele but good dealers filter them out.

      Not played one, but have played their guitars. Also know a writer for acoustic magazine who reviewed them - meant to be really nice for the money - modelled on original Martin ukes

    Which one is better to buy for Kala KA-S or Ohana SK-14 for the same price here for $119AUD?

      Afraid I don’t give specific recommendations - too subjective and those two are very close

    I'm watching this because someone's selling a barely-used Kala KA-S for $40 on FB marketplace, and I was curious. But being that I already have an entry-level laminate mahogany soprano, I probably should just put the $40 toward something else lol. (Actually, on Kala's website, there is no specification that it is laminate. It just says "mahogany." That is so annoying. Obviously at that price it's laminate.)

      If you already have an entry laminate, I don't think the KA-S would add anything to what you have really

    I have a Kala concert uke and the fingerboard is awful. There's glue marks and scraps everywhere.

      At this price - these things do happen with all brands. Where did you buy the ukulele as a good dealer would have weeded a ukulele like that out of sale. Sadly there are lots of dealers who sell grey imports on the cheap.

    We can have a doubt about Kala and Lanikai, but the Ohana really sounds like a cheaper instrument to me.

    • @GotAUkulele

      It was the Lanikai that sounded cheaper to my ears. Very subjective

    I'd agree. Kala wins. Throw the dolphin in there for the hell of it. May win! :)

    To my ears the Kala sounded the least out of tune and had the best intonation.
    The first two definitely sounded out of tune to me.
    Thanks for the review. 👍

    Lanikai LU21 hands down for me i also like bright and punchy soprano.Kala make great ukulele no doubt about it but i prefer Lanikai i'm planing on buying the LANIKAI SPST-S Solid Spruce Top Soprano the sound is incredible.

      Fair enough! I've always found Lanikai's thin sounding myself.

    Remind me to never let you hold my ukes , unless I want them bashed, dented , scratched, and abused . lol watching you slam these around was hard to watch . You should be ashamed of yourself 😛 But other than that , good review 😉
