Builder here. If you use rock wool insulation, it'll be better than roll insulation, but unlike spray foam, it'll be easy to run more wiring to the other side of the shop if you decide to change the layout. Also, instead of drywall, use 3/4 ply for wall sheathing. It'll allow you to mount things to the wall anywhere without needing to hit stud since it seems you have 24" on center stud spacing.
Great advice all around, and wicked eye on the 24" stuff spacing! I really haven't looked into rock wool at all. How does it compare cost wise for having it put in vs spray foam? And is it still doable on the ceiling?
@LooseFab r23 rock wool 23" wide is going to be only slightly more cost than r21 fiberglass, plus it doesn't iritate skin. I'd honestly say do it yourself for the lower 8 feet of wall. You can space out your cost by getting some as you are able and it doesn't take any technical know how. A YT video is more than enough training. Ceiling you are better off with spray foam.
Another benefit to rock wool is even less sound transfer than fiberglass, so late night projects have even less chance of waking/annoying neighbors/kiddos/spouse etc.
@@adultonsethunter5370 okay this is not something I had heard of nor looked into before and you might have just convinced me. Be nice to space out the cost as you said. One concern/question I have is that my studs currently have about 6" of space between them and the exterior wall. Would the rock wool stay in place? I worry with that much spaced they would wand to slough down..
@@LooseFab doesn't slump. It will stand on end on its own even in the middle of a room. No stapling it to studs either. With that kind of room between studs and siding, you may be able to put it all tight together behind the wood framed wall. It's one of those things once you actually work with it, you wonder why you used the other option your whole life 😉

@@BShaver-id8cq haha thanks man! Yeah its going to be a game changer for the scope of some of these projects! And he did the bulk of the work on the excavator, wouldn't have happened without him!

That's freaking awesome man, big congratulations. If you can stretch the budget it might be worth doing a concrete grind and seal of the floor, makes cleaning up easier, no oil strains to seep into the concrete and stops concrete dust building up. Can be done affordably if you rent a grinder and DIY too.
Great suggestion! I was on the fence about that for ages, and I actually did quite a bit of research on it. Professional install was out of my budget, and I've seen a lot of instances where the diy kits don't apply quite right and end up patchy.. That scared me more than just having an unsealed floor lol!
Rockwool is the way to go. Spray foam sucks. Rockwool can get wet and sti insulate, its more fire resistant. Its easily moveable and reinstallable if you ever need to service electrical or plumbing And it dampens sound well. Cover the walls in OSB or plywood or do the lower half in tin and the upper half in ply.
@@evictioncarpentry2628 I'd never really heard of this stuff but this is awesome information to have. Always up for saving money, especially if it's something I could do myself. I appreciate the suggestion!
Congrats on getting a nice shop built. As a fellow Canadian also in the same province, its definitely nice to have a secure and covered place to work on during the winter. I didn't see it in the video, but did you happen to run the lines to do in floor heat?
You're definitely right about that, winters here typically grind everything to a halt outside lol! I didn't do in floor heat unfortunately, not heat at all yet! Thanks for watching!
@@jacobpurvis1482 that would be an awesome setup! Should send me some pics on Instagram when you make it happen, I love seeing how other people set up their garages!
I build pole sheds for work and it’s amazing the price difference these days. My dad build his 40x60 shop in 2005 for $15k for materials AND labor. I can’t put up a 40x60 up for less than 80 grand.
@@Notafordguy it's insane how much prices have sky rocketed. I priced out a wood framed shop here and it was even worse than the steel. Also, love the dentsides you've got on your channel, they're awesome trucks. Thanks for watching
