  • Is the Border Collie the smartest dog breed in the world?
Do you watch and follow someone like the dog trainer, Zak George, and want a border collie of your own? So, because Zak is a dog trainer, not only does he have the training know how and general knowledge about the breed, but also understands the Border Collie's activity level requires both physical and mental stimulation. This breed is beautiful, smart, loving, loyal and highly energetic. They're wonderful dogs, but not a breed for everyone.

Yes, I had a sweet Border Collie that was my companion for 14 yrs. & she out smarted me a lot. She had the most incredable ability to read me & she always knew exactly what I was going to do next. Border Collies are incredible, I will never forget Mollie Mae.

My Tess Siobhan and my Gypsy Rose Lee would lie in my hallway and watch me from their snoozing place. I was their fold. They would also stare at me when I started to eat a meal. I sensed them saying "You will give me some of that." They also herded chickens, chipmunks, squirrels, ducks, geese, children, and even me. My first, Gem, an Aussie/BC, used to sleep in our hallway, eyed my mother for treats too, and herded us downstairs for meals, and both she and Tess would try to herd bused if not for her leash.

I watched this video in early 2021 when I was researching the kind of dog I wanted to get. After reviewing many breeds, I decided a border collie was the one for me. In mid-May, I found out a friend of mine had a pair of purebred border collies she had mated and had just given birth. I went quite a few times to see the litter of pups and there was one in particular that stood out. He and I really seemed to connect, so he's the one I brought home in mid-July. His name is Vader. Born May 15th, he will be 8 months on January 15th. We have been through obedience classes and he is without question extremely intelligent. Thank for you video - because it helped to lead me to my new companion and teammate!

      NEVER tease your BC.
Because they are SO literal in their thinking, they don't understand teasing, and it is a form of cruelty. They will do their BEST to please if you treat them with respect. Mine amazed me by things he would figure out on his own.

I have a Border Collie mix. I didn't know she was a Border Collie until I was on a trail (we hike a LOT) and I had a couple people tell me she looked just like a Border Collie they had. I had her tested. Mostly Border Collie, next greyhound, and some lab. Imagine the agility of a Border Collie with the speed of a Greyhound. She is 11 now, hopped a 5 ft fence on a hike recently, still fast (sounds almost like a horse when running), and quick/reactive. She is also my PTSD dog. I didn't rescue her for that purpose but it evolved. Not sure how I will survive when she passes but she looks to have several more years so I am good to go for now.

Border Collies are wonderful, intelegent dogs who tend to be extremely sensitive to their human's needs. The one I have now figured out how to flip the frisbee over so it's easier for a human to pick up to throw. That being said, they are a lot of work.
If you get one, don't give up on it if it's still a terror after two years. Their high energy, high intelligence, and extreme level of focus make them challenging to train initially. Your dog will outsmart you and pick up unwanted behaviors you didn't mean to teach them. My girl learned to pee in the house if she wanted to go outside.
They tend to be on the wary side, so socialization and confidence building is a must. If undersocialized, they will herd other dogs. This may seem funny, but the behavior is predatory, causing the dog being herded to become nervous or scared. If this is done to the wrong dog, your Border Collie may be attacked in self defense.
Teaching them to shift or break their focus can be a challenge as well. Obedience courses can help with this, but there is no substitute for consistency when giving commands. Come and sit are vital for your dog's safety.
Overwork is also a concern. Often, you as the owner will have to recognize when your dog is tired and needs to stop, because they will keep going until they collapse. That goes for any job you give them, be it agility, frisbee, or even hiking.
Overcome all the challenges and you will have an amazing companion who is willing to go anywhere and do anything by your side. They will know exactly what you need from them and do it without you even needing to ask. They will protect your home without outright agression from all manner of potential threats, and they will impress any visitors with all the interesting behaviors they picked up over time. I can't recommend them enough for anyone who's willing to put in the time and effort.

My border collie died about a year ago at almost 20. The doctor said that she in fact was older than that. She was my aunt's dog and I got her after my aunt passed away. That is why I would not recommend a border collie for seniors, unless they have a trusted person who could take good care of the dog if something happens to the owner. These dogs can live a very long life and they are very very energetic all the way to the old age. My dog was hyperactive till few months before she passed away. So anyway, from my experience I think we should make sure there is somebody else who could take care of our pets in general, if something happens to us, even if it's something for a short period of time.

I raised them and found them awesome. That said there is a big difference between obedience and intelligence. I would have to say most obedient, not most intelligent. I have raised three breeds and used to show dogs. From my experience would say Poodles and Afghan Hounds are most intelligent.... they know well what is wanted or trained for but decide for themselves. My Border Collies we're from Winston Cap, a top winning dog of Wales.

They are wonderfull pets and happy to do whatever we decide but outings are always the best. I´ll spare you th etime, they are... Literally promised him some rice i make him if he behaved, he behaved, i totally forgot, and when i gave him his regular food he was like "you forgot, huh, you dummy?" giving me the look and just not taking it... Then realized, oh... The level of receptiveness and focus of these dogs, even when not trained, cna last for hours of not days... Like, i don't train him, and he learns things constantly still... It's very crazy for someone who had other animals before, jump to an animal companion of such level of sentience.
He's also so good and kind, in over 2 years i still have never heard him growl once... I work often and night and he knows he has to be quiet, cause we live in an apartment, spacious, but with sleeping neighbors... Cats don't give a damn, he gets stressed for me, cause i know the noises annoy me, so by proxy annoy him, so he stands up to the cats, ready to reprimend them.
This breed, and any mix of good breeds with Border Collie will oftenly result in a magnificent animal. I would say they are overlook, but quite the contrary, they're gaining more traction, cause in terms of animal looks, it's all been done, and the more its done, the less healthy the animals are gonna be... And people now just want an intelligent and helthy companion that is a treat to have around, which is why i think BC are becoming so popular.

I have a rough coat, tri-color Border Collie with tag ears born to AKC parents, a black and white father and a merle mother. Often people mistakenly think my dog is a Border Collie mix or an Australian Shepherd.

I have the same, except he’s got a bit of brown seal coat coming in around his bottom and rear legs. Often confused for an Aussie. Best dog ever, and he’s only 6 months old!

My BC has a grey and brown piebald pattern. No Merle except for her cheeks. And two blue eyes. I am so tired of people asking if she is “part husky”

What people consider smart or clever in dogs is just their willingness to work. Border Collies are 100% willing to work and obey commands, thus people consider them smarter than other breeds. Sighthounds are designed to think by themselves, to decide themselves what's the right thing to do. They are not willing to take your whistles and commands, thus, they are not considered smart by todays' humans. I owned a shepherd and now I have 2 Borzois. I consider them the same smart. It's beautiful to see the two borzois working together without having to move a finger when they are hunting. They consider each other's positions, constantly changing directions way before the hare does. The shepherd was amazing in obeying and always doing what I said. Sighthounds are different. They think by themselves.

Yep, all dogs are smart and all living things are smart, in their own way. The Border Collie breed is just ranked #1 overall in test studies, studies are based on instinctive intelligence, adaptive intelligence, work and obedience intelligence. I agree, sighthounds are amazing dogs!

@@DogDetailsTV Studies are based on how a dog is willing to cooperate in the study, not taking into account that dogs were bred for different purposes so their smart cannot be compared this way. Some are easier to motivate with a toy, others with food, others only get motivated by their owners presence. These studies usually measure on one level (on the level of willingness to cooperate) not by general intelligence. Guard dogs or sighthounds have to be smart NOT to take orders, nor cooperate with everyone so they are considered less smart. They were bred to think independently, so nowadays studies won't do them justice. Shepherds were bred to obey under any given circumstance. Border collies are amazing for their extreme amount of willingness to give and cooperate also they need a hell of a lot of 'to do' in order to stay healthy just like other breeds from the pastoral group! Guard dogs or sighhounds do not need that much activity or busyness. That's how dog breeds evolved in the old times, they all had a purpose. Not because "they are all smart in their own way" but because they were bred for different purposes and they had to be smart in their own way.

@@ritatiszberger6792 Precisely. " The Border Collie breed is just ranked #1 overall in test studies, studies are based on instinctive intelligence, adaptive intelligence, work and obedience intelligence." :) Thanks for your comment.
