Wasn't Paul an apostle? He was not of the twelve. Romans 1:1: Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God. Other scriptures back this up. Ephesians 1:1, 1 Corinthians 1:1, Galatians 1:1, and 2 Corinthians 1:1. There are also others called apostles besides the twelve and Paul.
