Regarding your comments on the fear of destroying the leather folio, it isn't the traditional leather that you can scratch with your nail or make marks on. It's a treated, flattened, and hardened surface. I never even dented my leather folio on my RM2.
I agree with your comments, but I would never expect “true colors” from such a device. Compared to Kaleido 3 it is much better, some color really pop (red, yellow). Other than CMYK (key = black) in print publications, there is no real black as far as I understand, but a mixture of pigments, so it makes sense that the black is like a dirty dark blue. But for me, this is not perceptible when reading black text. Regarding software: That's really a matter of preference. I am always struggling to synchronize my content with the Onyx devices. I have used several Android apps for notes, used specific syncing apps on the file system level. Not only that, but I regularly fail with all of these approaches. All my notes archives and the Calibre library are out of sync. I have tried the Boox account as well, but they just synchronize annotations and not PDFs / ePubs. Apart from that ... China, no thanks. reMarkable gives me an all-in-one app that just works on all devices (I use Chromebooks, Macbooks, iphone, now also Google Pixel Fold 9 ... I need cross-platform). Your mileage may vary of course.

After watching your review, I’d like to share a few observations: Both devices use different technologies. Kaleido 3 on Onyx devices operates with an RGB filter and black pigments, which gives it four primary colors: Black, Red, Green, and Blue. In contrast, the Gallery 3 on the R-Pro uses CMY pigments (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) along with reflective white, where black is synthesized from the combination of the CMY colors. Because of this, the Gallery 3 struggles to display true black (since it has to be constructed from three CMY pixels). Yes, it does show a better yellow than Kaleido, as yellow is a primary color in Gallery 3, while it has to be synthesized on Kaleido. For a reading device, contrast and the representation of black are far more important than showcasing illustrations with more natural yellow tones. Onyx here is clearly a winner. It also seems like you haven’t fully explored the settings and display optimization on Onyx devices, as the images you show have incorrect settings, which is why RM images appear diffused, while Onyx devices offer smoother transitions with correct settings. Another important point is the refresh rate. Onyx has far more expertise in this area, and sooner or later, the flickering display and ghosting artifacts on the RM-Pro will start to frustrate users. Regarding some of your comments on synchronization: Onyx is an open Android tablet. You can use any cloud or sync apps you like. Personally, I use Folder Sync Pro, and it covers all my needs perfectly.
Thanks for your feedback. I agree with your comments, and I have already added some updates in a further video regarding the setting of my Onyx devices. But they have always been mainly optimized for text, and often the best optimization for text and photos are not the same. I love my Onyx Go 10.3 for reading pure crisp text. I still think the Gallery 3 technology implemented by reMarkable is a game changer. It's much better for photos and also for some textbook graphics it helps a lot. The flickering is much better than the famous / infamous Bigme device using Gallery 3, but it is still different from the Kaleido 3 screen. By the way, for some reason, when you highlight text on the reMarkable 2, there is a similar flickering and update even in grayscale, so maybe that's also related to their software implementation. I hope they can optimize this is future updates. The refrsh rate on my Onyx Go 10.3 is only good, if I set the respective modes in e-ink center. If I use Regal and the app is not optimized, the screen flickering and refresh rates are cumbersome as well. Will it bother users? I don't know, will depend on the user ... :-) Will it annoy me sooner or later, don't know either, whether the - for e-ink screens - great colors outweigh the disadvantages. Time will tell. If have used Folder Sync Pro on my Onyx Go 10.3, Tab Ultra C, and Boox Palma. After a lot of sync issues and duplication (multifold-ification if this word exists ...) I gave up. Multiple devices requires a lot of "active work" to keep the sync up and running properly, including the main source, which is Calibre on my Macbook. So currently, reading and annotating textbooks and documents, as well as clean notes on the reM PP is far superior to me, the text is slightly inferior but bigger, the size is at least my number 2 criterion for a device, all Onyx Boox(s) so far - excluding the Tab X - are too small for me. And the Tab X is maybe even to big and has not color ... Therefore, the reM PP is in a sweet spot. This all sounds as if I would heavily promote the device ... No, I am not sure yet if it is the best e-ink device for me. Until a couple of years ago if rooted any Anroid device and developed my own hacks ... :-) So is this " just works" approach with a lot of limitations for me? Honestly, only time will tell.
Abt 27:45 , you are comparing the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C and the RM PP, and you said: "Yes again the sharpness of the screen is different. The Remarkable is 229, I think, let's say 230, and this is about 300." | But this is wrong. I mean, when viewing the colorful documents on the Onyx Boox Ultra, the PPI is actually lower , it is 150 ppi. See the original specification from the Onyx: "10.3" E Ink Kaleido 3, 4096 colors, touch (inductive + capacitive), resolution - 2480 x 1860 (1240 x 930 in color mode), pixel density - 300 ppi (150 ppi in color mode), with the SNOW Field (Regal) function"
You are correct, this overly simplified. The resolution of the black ink particles is 300ppi in the latest Book devices, but the color resolution is only 150. And you can see this (already on the screen of the older reM 2). B&W is slightly sharper on Onyx devices than on the reM, but color on the reM PP is beyond comparison.
Actually this was really a very fast walk-through because of my excitement after delivery. I will do dome more in-depth comparison as I am crazy enough to own (too) many e-ink devices 😀
What do you mean with "Artefacts"? I think Boox imagine looks superior than remarkable. I've got RM2 and I don't know if but Boox note air3c or the remarkable version pro? What don't you like about Boox?
I admit, I was surprised first as well. It appears harder than on the reM 2. But once I compared the writing experience on paper with a ball pen, that's about how it feels on the reM PP. On the reM 2 it is more like writing with a felt-tip pen (which is only because of the reM 2 nibs - some third party nibs are much more "slippery"). But it is in fact more comparable to ball pen and paper for me. I think this very subjective ...
While you were showing us the picture quality across different devices, I am more concerned about the text quality in the Paper Pro. It is clearly worse than 10.3, but I wonder if it is also worse than RM2. I need to annotate a lot of PDF files and that is a big concern for me.
@rideralarm, good point, agree. I own GO10.3, but ordered the RM PP. However, I think on the RM PP the quality of the text is not very bad, overall. I think it can be get used to.
@@jacksonier Thank you for your reply and thank you for this very timely and informative demonstration video. If you have new experience using the Paper Pro reading files, for example, by using the enhance contrast function, please keep us updated.
Hi, three years ago I bought the remarkable 2 and ended up selling it because I found the screen a bit small to study my PDF notes and because it didn't have backlighting...now I bought the pro because it has a bigger screen and backlighting...do you think it has been a good option for studying?...I see that more alternatives have the smaller screen. I also have free connect forever for having bought remarkable 2 3 years ago before the subscription existed.
You are welcome. And in any case you still have the 100 days return policy, even if this may be annoying dealing with taxes and customs in certain locations.

Fair comment, this ranges really from "I don't care" to "No go". I hope that showcasing the behavior helps to make a better decision whether to purchase or not - it's not a bargain after all.
The R-Pro looks amazing! But ghe argument with distraction doesn‘t count as you can either just turn off all notifications or just don’t download apps.
I agree to some extent, but I was lucky to get a used Freewrite Traveller, and it is a difference using a device only for one purpose. Sure not for everyone, I was also thinking it's no difference, but for me this turned out to be wrong. I don't use my iPad pro anymore ...
I just got remarkable paper pro, briefly had remarkable 2 before and and old onyx boox. The major cons immediately are the 'upgraded' pen, feels closer to ipad than any previous e-ink device, and the lack of a quick button or similar for quick tool toggle is baffling, you have to click the toolbar for everything. A pro is that with the larger space and decent speed wrt zoom and scroll makes it almost usable for detailed concept maps but the problem is the gesture recognition is very unpredictable, often takes multiple tries to get a zoom or a scroll. The screen looks a lot worse generally, and colour refresh is very annoying to the point that I won't even use it (I didn't want color anyway but if it worked well I would have used it) All in all, some stupid decisions.
Thanks for your remarks. Yes, I agree, I sometimes also have issues with the gestures not being recognized immediately. I hope this can be fixed in an upcoming firmware upgrade. The screen ... well, it depends. I need the color, as color does provide information in some scientific documents, it's not just about illustrations. In those cases, even if the colors are not the same as in high-quality prints, they make a huge difference. No Kaleido 3 device comes even close. But there is the tradeoff regarding screen refreshes. It depends on what one is willing to sacrifice. I definitely value the colors above the small tradeoffs.
I don’t think this is a device to view images regardless, you’re better off reviewing the quality of the note taking experience with colour instead of analysing image quality - wouldn’t you use an ipad if thats really a concern?
People will get a book mostly to read it and not to see single color photos (which would be a whole better on an iPad). The low contrast text fonts even in the reMarkable Paper Pro is bad for a e-book reader. It would be nicer if you could zoom in and focus on the text font rendering.
Absolutely! The Ipad (or flip phones) are much better suited. But in non-fiction books, images (not necessarily photos, but diagrams, graphics etc.) play an important role. I still find color very helpful in those cases.
Boox devices are still far superior. I regularly watch comparisons and honestly can’t understand how anyone would choose something like Bigme or RM over them.
I understand where you are coming from. I assume this is because of the higher contrast. When you want a photo to appear sharper (e.g. Photoshop) the fastest way is to add some edge contrast. So this may be the reason. Do you own a GoPro? There are multiple sharpness modes (and they are all based on contrast). I find a "mild" contrast much more pleasant for my eyes, that's why I prefer the photos on the reM devices.
Question: By any chance, are you getting annoyed because of the "computer mouse clicking" noise, coming from that "custom active pen" with RM PP? :) Or, maybe, it's not that audiable, what woud you say?
Honestly I did not realize this sound at all. It is different (= harder) than on the reM 2 but I like the feeling. Not comparable to Samsung Pens or Apple Pencil. But I am not too critical about noise in general, so don't take my comment now. Please let me check tomorrow when I have time to answer all of the questions in detail.
You haven't even tried to write nor sketche on it - in a 37+ min video... what the heck! It is a "digital notetaker and for the ones who like handwritten notes"! Thank God for the fast forward function in yt vids... I would feel betrayed if I had watched the video until the end just to find out that you absolutely didn't try to write on it!
the remarkable pro isn't worth it! the kindle paper scribe is a lot better and cheaper! I just bought the remarkable and I owned the kindle scribe as well. In my opinion the kindle is better due to better lighting, features, and overall function. I'm returning mine ASAP, truly not worth the money after using the kindle scribe for over a year.
Great if this works for you, for me it's the opposite: I purchased the Scribe when it came out and returned it immediately. Here is why: - No color, I knew that in advance, but it turned out to really a deal-breaker with documents relying on colors (diagrams ...) - Amazon ecosystem, which is a limitation for me as only a few 100 ebooks are purchased via Amazon, the rest are downloaded papers or purchased PDF and some ePub ebooks without DRM. - Related to the previous, loading and managing a large amount of PDFs is very painful, and the process of uploading via the Kindle library performs some file transformation. PDFs are a second class citizen on Kindle, but for me they are #1. - Size, the reMPP biggest pro is its size, still too small for me, I would love to see full A4 size, but since color is a must-have, there is no alternative at the moment. So for me, the Kindle is not worth the price, but the reMPP is - though I liked if it was cheaper of course :-)

I did try all settings in the e-ink center to find the best setting for me. And I have shown the update. Did I miss any other settings outside e-ink center that affect image quality?
Yet another sponsored review from someone that has been given a free sample. Your first mistake, you cannot search notes. The device is hugely overpriced. The company has dreadful customer service. Very strange that all of those leaving great reviews have obviously received free samples whereas customers that have paid are still waiting. As an ebook reader it is totally useless and unable to read drm protected books. Minimal gb storage and no sd card upgrade. Why are you promoting this rubbish?
1. You can search only keywords in titles. Full-text search is not available in either documents, ebooks nor PDFs. And not in notes either, which would be one of those use cases where AI in the cloud could really help. 2. Yes it's expensive. 3. It's the perfect ebook reader, this is my personal main use-case. I need color for scientific books. I never buy DRM books, just open formats, and I would not recommend to anyone bying DRM protected books anymore in 2024. I stopped using Kindle years ago ... 4. 64G of storage seems pretty decent for ebooks and notes only. 5. I do not promote anything, I am happy that I could finally get an e-reader & note-taker that meets my expectation 80-90 percent. 6. I have paid the full price for this product.
I will do dome more in-depth comparison as I am crazy enough to own (too) many e-ink devices 😀
those artefacts on my BOOX Note Air3C drove me crazy. Now I‘m back using my reMarkable 2 - and ordered already a Paper Pro!
What do you mean with "Artefacts"? I think Boox imagine looks superior than remarkable. I've got RM2 and I don't know if but Boox note air3c or the remarkable version pro? What don't you like about Boox?
Remarkable all the way! I have the Pro already! Nice image quality, agree!
i own this but still watch what others think of it
Thanks for your interest and watching!
Thanks for this, friend.
But I would like to know what is the text like on the remarkable pro?
How’s the texture of the screen compared to Remarkable 2 and the Go 10.3?
I’ve seen some reports that it’s worse.
(Less like paper)
@@liketheduck I also think so...I mean, it's kinda should be better than Apple Pensil, but ..
I have no problem with text quality, and I read technical PDFs all the time
Hi, three years ago I bought the remarkable 2 and ended up selling it because I found the screen a bit small to study my PDF notes and because it didn't have backlighting...now I bought the pro because it has a bigger screen and backlighting...do you think it has been a good option for studying?...I see that more alternatives have the smaller screen. I also have free connect forever for having bought remarkable 2 3 years ago before the subscription existed.
27:40 just fyi Kaleido 3 is 150ppi when in color
Thank you!
Redditors were making me have second thoughts on my order, your video looks good though. I can't wait, thank you for sharing.
You are welcome. And in any case you still have the 100 days return policy, even if this may be annoying dealing with taxes and customs in certain locations.
@@Artellico Exactly, that's why I ordered 🙂

The flashing makes it a no-go for me.
The colour displays are not developed enough yet.
Fair comment, this ranges really from "I don't care" to "No go". I hope that showcasing the behavior helps to make a better decision whether to purchase or not - it's not a bargain after all.
Thanks.
Sure you can 😉
It seems to favor yellows.
The screen looks a lot worse generally, and colour refresh is very annoying to the point that I won't even use it (I didn't want color anyway but if it worked well I would have used it)
All in all, some stupid decisions.
No true blacks. Only dark blue.
Hi do you speak French too even if you are in Austria
Where's the note taking? 😥
I hope this one covers what you are looking for: th-cam.com/video/LMeVWrvAijA/w-d-xo.html
Maybe its me but in boox color i can see details that in rm pro are fuzzy 🤷
@@Artellico Okay, okay. Sounds good)
You haven't even tried to write nor sketche on it - in a 37+ min video... what the heck!
Here is why:
- No color, I knew that in advance, but it turned out to really a deal-breaker with documents relying on colors (diagrams ...)
- Amazon ecosystem, which is a limitation for me as only a few 100 ebooks are purchased via Amazon, the rest are downloaded papers or purchased PDF and some ePub ebooks without DRM.
Boox is an easy no for me, giving China all your notes is not really ideal 😆, thanks for the overview though!
@slothsarecool, "giving China all your notes is not really ideal" , do you have any particular argument in your mind for that point? I mean most of the electronics is manufactured in the China. This means your point equally applies to all those electronics, and not only to the "Boox". Thanks.
It seems like you don't know how to setup Boox device. There are multiple viewing modes with different performance options
I did try all settings in the e-ink center to find the best setting for me. And I have shown the update. Did I miss any other settings outside e-ink center that affect image quality?
No, it’s not.
I am by far too unimportant than anyone would send me a review sample. But please do me a favor and ask tech companies to do so, this would help me to save some 1000€ for tech equipment per year!

Maybe its me but in boox color i can see details that in rm pro are fuzzy 🤷
@whiteglitch, hmm, maybe, what do you mean by "fuzzy"? To me, if you'd look at 34:22 time in this video, you might see how good the screen on the RM PP is...I mean, it's better than on the Ultra or Go, but only for the images...
29:06 the Windows on the right side have horizontal Lines in boox but not in RM pro
@@whiteglitch interesting, you are right. Those lines within the window look more crisp on the Go10.3 and Tab UltraC, versus RM PP
@@jacksonierI'm curious if playing with image settings on boox could yield a result more similar to the RM pro 🤔
@@whiteglitch Yes, that is good point. From what I have seen from another reviewer - Voja, those settings available on the Boox, say Go10.3, Do affect the image quality drastically. So, let's see further reviews.
