legends these guys.. thanks for sharing your journey Joshua!
It's crazy how much that helps to make CGI elements feel more realistic! Incredible work!
Thanks! I'm really pleased with the end result
Your mummy looks more like clay animation than CGI.
And everything is very well composited!
I would not have guessed your hallway setting wasn't real if you hadn't shown your blue screen footage.
Huge compliment, man. Nice to know im getting it right
Unbelievable results! The forefront of virtual production this channel! Smashed it
Thanks so much
This is so insanely inspirational
Thanks man. You just have to keep at it. Whatever it is.
crazy how we can feel the hapiness when the lens finally works !
It's pure relief. I was so far through the process I'd have hated it to not work in unreal.
End result is amazing. Would love to watch a longer breakdown of the whole process, like the lighting setup, compositing etc...
That's what the course will be... but instead of the result form this video we made a full mummy short film and will show the process end to end.
I hope this lens system is built in 3D programs in upcoming. Such a vibe to see
So cool! Some of those shots, especially with the mummy look like Claymation with the virtual lenses. I don't see anyone else taking this approach. You are awesome.
@azielarts Thanks so much, Thaddeus! I'm glad you like it. You'll have to try it for some of your renders!
@@JoshuaMKerr Absolutely!
If someone from Hollywood reaches out, you have to let us know. 😊Amazing job!!
lol, I'd be surprised. Thanks for saying, though.
Youre such an inspiration man... Figuring all of this out with trial and error
Great stuff Joshua. Good on you for not giving up!
Hello, I own an helios m44-4 and i love using it on lumix camera ! Incredible work you have done virtualize the 44-2 !!
@@philippeLebret Great lenses. I love a helios. I have the 44M also and its another great one.
This is INSANE!!! Wow!
If you want some of these characteristics in the realtime view with lumen as well there is a new virtual production addon called Camera Calibration from epic games that is used to match lens character with the virtual Cine cameras as well.
Distortion calibration for sure, but does the new plugin do more than that?
Like your showreel, by the way
Good job! I hope this method/topic gets more attention soon.
I really want to try using anamorphic lenses virtually like this since there’s really no other way to get accurate anamorphic distortion and depth perception, but so far I think only Jack T. Was able to pull it off
I think Zircron is working on that as well though!
Amazing new lens! Thanks a lot for the hard work.
Sick result, well done! Can't wait to see both the final short and the full course 😊
I really love how ambitious this guy is! He keeps surprising me, project after another!
Very inspiring!!
I keep choosing really difficult projects. After this I'd love an easier one.
Brilliant work, and thank you for sharing. I've been wanting to do the same with some vintage Zeiss lenses, but lack the skill level. Great work! I hope we'll see more virtual lenses in the future.
Im sure I'll be making more. I do have a very nice zeiss jena that I want to make.
Great showcase of the virtual lens, incredibly cool to see it matched up with the real footage like that. I'm also super impressed at how accurate your recreation was... curious to know what some of the secrets were to solving those issues 🥸
Hi sirandalot! When I was doing my research for my first let of lenses, your 'Make Renders Incredibly Complicated' video proved it was possible and I found that incredibly motivational. You blazed a trail there.
Glad you like the helios re-creation, I'm pleased with the result, although I need to build an aperture control for it and refine the focus control.
It's tricky to explain but part of the issue surrounds finding the rear element to sensor distance in both thr real world and blender. Blender's focus distance setting causes some offset to this value, which was kinda hard to diagnose. If you want I'd be happy to have a chat with you and show my working a bit. Let me know and I'll pop you my email address.
I can now use my Helios with Unreal in virtual production- mind blown. Thank you!
Yeah man! Please do...it's lonely at the top xD
You are very talented! I really want to learn virtual production! I can’t wait for the course!
Me too.
Fantastic work, and great job sticking with it! I'm curious, did you do any digital recreation of coatings from the original 44-2 lens? Or just relying on the ior and sizing of the elements?
Hi there. I didnt have any coating information amd wouldnt be sure how that should be translated to pbr.
Hello Josh. I own the set of Iron Glass lenses that were used in Batman. You can get some fantastic images with them especially using the Varicam. So I will look out for this lense on the market place. Keep the good work up. Always interesting to see what you are up to.
Oh very nice, those rehoused lenses are very nice. I had the pleasure of trying a 28mm Iron Glass earlier this year.
The virtual Helios is availlable from a link in the descripton :)
Aaaand... you got a new follower. This is freaking amazing. Eyes opened. Lightbulb moment. Mind blown.
And THANK YOU for the idea: getting blueprints from the patent office. Brilliant.
Hey, glad to have you on the journey with me.
Thank you soooooo much!
Thanks that i can use it without paying again!
I tested a bit and its looking great!
No worries. It makes no sense to put barriers in peoples way needlessly. Plus, it's a bit experimental and will need some updates.
Incredible stuff, Josh. Awesome to see the full process in this video, and the results are stunning. These virtual lenses are a huge step towards true realism in Unreal Engine and I'll be using them on all my projects! It was a pleasure shooting with you :)
It was great shooting with you too man! I have such high hopes for this short that we've made. Keep up the great work on your channel.
Well done, will buy the pack today as I’m working on my film this week.
Cool, join the discord too. If you have questions you can post them there.
Nicely done sir! I appreciate all your time, effort and willingness to share.
I appreciate you watching. I aint goin nowhere
Amazing attention to detail.
Thanks
It's a pity that I live in Russia! If I could be by your side, we would combine my knowledge and skills with yours and create a movie. Keep up the great work, don't stop-you're the best! You will achieve everything you want!!
I think you should create a virtual ironglass set, include the Tair-300 to make it a set of seven.
20,28,32,58(Helios),85,135+300 (Tair)
Damn I'd love to but patent hunting is just awful and I don't own the ironglass set to compare to either. Good idea. Maybe one day I'll get the chance.
WOOW FANTASTICO ME ENCANTO !!! GOOD JOB
Thanks!
Man I came for knowledge and I left with a lot of anticipation for you’re short, very excited to see what you come up with!
Can't wait to show what we're making. Glad you're excited
Thank you for this awesome insight of how you created this lens!
I am really curious about the last part, how you eventually made this lens match the Helios 44-2 bokeh :). I’ve been struggling myself as well with recreating lenses. My images always aren’t crisp and show different bokeh compared to the real life lens 😓
Anyways great work as always, really inspiring!
For me a lot of it came down to the settings on the camera. We are using them as sensor planes but they still have depth of field and focus settings which can cause some wierd problems. But honestly optics is such a vast topic and these virtual lenses can fail for just about any reason.
Congrats! The journey has had me on the edge of my seat! Looks great!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. It was certainly a journey.
Great man. You are literally crazy. So blender version of the helios include the package ?
Glad you like the work. The blender files are not included. Virtual glass was made for Unreal.
Thanks for making and sharing this.
Thanks for watching it
That’s insane of idea 🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely fantastic!
Really well done mate. Very impressive.
Thanks man
Really fun watch! Super dope topic and fantastic final result.
Cheers man!
Looks good! I can definitely see you developing a larger fan base, this is entertaining and well narrated content :)
Thanks man
Respect for your perserverance on this 😮
Thanks man
Astonishing work!
Thanks man
Oh my word this looks so good!!!!
Still very excited to see what the short is going to look like, is it coming out soon?
Im trying to get it out this month
You probably have a ton on your plate already, but a short walk through of the Unreal part, setting, lighting, etc, would be awesome. I can't seem to nail path traced lighting or settings beyond what you and Boundless guy (I'm ashamed I can't remember his name right now) have provided. Like my fog disappears, etc. I bought the lens pack previously and loved what they do, but got frustrated with the path tracing part, if that makes sense.
Wow. How awesome it looks!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the attention of detail of this. Curious if these virtual lenses can be applied to the UE in real-time or if they are designed to be applied on the final render.
They only work with pathtracer. Glad you like the video.
bro - that's a crazy idea! Love this!!
Wtf!? Genius ❤❤❤
Bravo bravo my friend...
Love your stuff Josh! Just wanted to say I grabbed the free 85mm lens you made available, and it looks absolutely gorgeous in my scenes! I'm just noticing the focus on my subjects isnt 10% sharp, my point of focus looks just a touch out of focus. Anyone else have this issue? Did you find a solution?
Hi, yes the 85mm is a bit soft. Glad you like it though. I hope to make an updated version of the lens pack.
what a blast!
I want to buy your full course with an explanation from beginning to end of how to make a movie. Please, just let it be with a very clear explanation!
I plan for it to be very detailed
@@JoshuaMKerr Thanks. Can you give me an estimated launch date for this course?
@@3dd205 I'm also wondering when???
This is so epic
Thanks man!
BROOOOOO THIS LOOKS PERFECT
Hey man! Thanks! Glad you like it
Amazing stuff!
insane work man !!!! insane!
Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it.
the best lens
excellent job brother
Thanks man
Looks awesome!
Cheers
that's great man!
I came here to say I was a bit bummed by the added render times and I had an issue not being able to keep the lens synced with my camera shake...Which I am sure there is a fix for my dumb...but man...I think you just resold me on using these on a short. Nice work on the helios. I have an old PL mount Helios for my 35mm Arri 3. I think I have to find a PL mount digital cam now. hahaha Nice work. Also you mentioned having a little one...I thought you had been a school boy! lol
@HealingPeace-bz7rt Haha... yeah, im a dad...school was a very long time ago for me.
You mention trying to add camera shake to the helios. Is this a blueprint based camera shake? Tell me a bit about your setup.
If you have a pl mount helios is it a 44-2. There are quite a few variants
Great project. I will ask to you how did you define and set the distance from virtual camera to the lens modeled? THis is an important question i mean? Thanks
In normal lenses, that distance depends very much on the focus distance you want. And this is true in virtual lenses too but it is also affected by the focus distance settings of the virtual camera, so it can cause some trial and error.
Not sure if this answers your question
very underrated channel
@@PnoMate Thanks for saying so. Im glad you enjoy my work
Awesome!!!
Insane! How do u learned ue5 blueprints?
I've picked it up a bit over the years (mainly youtube tutorials), but im still not very good at it.
Did you made a realtime compositing with composure in unreal before or in Fusion the keyed footage on top?
The comp was all done in fusion.
May I ask, if we purchase the Virtual Glass, do they contain everything to get them working in blender too? I assume it will be the model + material with correct IOR. And, perhaps a rig to focus? Thanks!
They are set up to work in unreal. I have the blender files, but im not familiar enough with blender to make a neat rig. The helios works a bit differently to the first lenses I made. It currently has a focus controller, but aperture is fixed at f2 for now. I'll be updating this.
This is a really great adventure. You have a very cool narrator style voice, I can almost hear it now... "Here we have the Jena Biotar, far from its native ecology, the Biotar is a rare prize currently being hunted down, with few surviving." (Oh wait, that's Sir David Attenborough... my bad)
What a great skill set. Thank you for the video!
BTW, how do you deal with the giant light focused on the back of your head like that early in the vid... its so bright you ears are glowing red!
Thanks man...I'm certainly no Attenborough haha. Not sure what you mean about the light, I was filming prety ad-hoc so nothing is lit in a deliberate way. I just want to catch myself in the midst of the process.
@@JoshuaMKerr Oh, there was this one scene... "1 Week Later", at 2:03, I thought you did that on purpose tho.
@marcfruchtman9473 Whatever you're seeing must just be me
is there any way you could make the virtual helios lens available for use in blender? it would be an incredible tool to have and something I personally have had on my wishlist for a long time!
I don't think it will be any time soon, but I am going to look at doing this.
Bro can u please make a video on DMX control for controlling external lights to fit unreal engine environment
It's on my list. It might be more suited to the upcoming course, though.
08:10 "Area Clear" Ahh reaction.
Oh 100%
@@JoshuaMKerr Any chance of a video on Unreal optimization for Animation for both viewport working and rendering.. Please
Nice, Man!
Do you know How can show and get templates of câmeras and lens tô unreal? Free or paying?
Im pretty sure that this is the first lens created that works in unreal.
How to use You Free Lance in Blender ?????????????
It's made for Unreal. I don't have a blender version.
@JoshuaMKerr please make for blender also 😅 humble request 😌
@Gametime05577 It won't be for a while at least. I dont use blender very much.
Dude this is better CGI than Hollywood! It totally looks real!
Too kind :)
I bought the Collection and still in love with this. But i have the problem in 90% of my shoots i have ghosting "bloom" in around the object what is in focus, hmm. I try to turn dirt and bloom off, but a complete turn off of the bloom is not possible. Can someone help?
Have you joined the discord. That's the best place for posting problems and getting support
@@JoshuaMKerr I will try thx
So what was missing for the lens? Pattern and ior are not enough? :O
So much man. It's crazy. I didn't bother going into it in the video because to explain one thing I have to explain ten other things...and before I know it the video would become a bloated mess.
@@JoshuaMKerr hot damn! Any plans to make a video just about that then?
@Ecklar Very unlikely, sorry, It’s a bit too niche and would stray a bit far from my channel topic.
is there camera correction in this new UE5, or camera tilt?
Im not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate?
Aperture and filmback. Aperture determines the bokeh. Filmback determines AOV.
Yes indeed.
🙌
We want the blender Lens. :)
I'll see what I can do
where could i find the blender version?
My lens pack is just for UE5
Is there blender downloads? I do u unreal but currently am switching to a blender workflow for renders and im doing concept art and i find for this type of shot its easier and faster to work in blender fully with some external texture work.
There aren't any blender versions right now. Im trying to figure out the best way to do this
@@JoshuaMKerr sorry i guess i mis understood i thought it was working in blender and then u converted it over to ue5? Hopefully u get a working version. Would be super cool
@mine_raidz1514 I modelled it in blender, but I didn't build any controls that would make it easy to use.
@@JoshuaMKerr ahh gotcha, will u be working on a version for blender or since you use ue5 nah? I get if u dont cause its obviously alot of work.
@mine_raidz1514 Im going to look into it, but im not totally sure. There's the initial effort to get it all working, but also future updates and compatability to bear in mind.
WWouuaAAhhhHH!!
they work in blender too?
My lens pack is just for UE5. Might do blender down the line
@@JoshuaMKerr Nice! I'll be waiting
what a noob type of stuff
