  • UDM move to 2.x firmware has brought major changes to the system architecture, but very little tangible benefit to users. Yet.

I've been on the EA version of this for quite some time and it has been solid. I now have a separate NVR, so I no longer run Protect on the UDM Pro, but since moving to 2.x branch, the OS overhead has gone down dramatically by running on bare metal. The load balancing was also included in this one, although we'll need 3.x to really take advantage of that cleanly. Ubiquiti is hopefully getting these devices aligned to the rest within a few more months. The big 'risk' was 1.x to 2.x - I think they are now running tests to ensure nothing breaks, but 2.x to 3.x should be relatively painless compared to this huge move.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad I'm not the only one seeing lower overhead. I held off 2.x for a long time. The early revs were only for the very daring. I appreciate their service to the greater good :D. Crossing my fingers that the 3.x migration is smooth, there is so much good stuff there.

@@MissingRemote 2.x branch will not be for long anyway; If you are on E.A. for the OS side, you will spot 3.0.x is coming soon. Based on the speed they are moving now (they always said 1 to 2 would be the big risk), I would hazard a guess at a few months before the UDM and UDM Pro are on the 3.x branch and then catch up to the SE versions. I know I'm missing the firewall only ones, but if you're on one of those, from what I remember they are also moving to the unified platform. Good times, as you still can't even buy the SE model where I live and that's been out for a couple of years now with not even on the horizon status from vendors (distributors) right now. Can't talk EA but it seems solid so far :)

@@wiebowesterhof I would love to talk about how stable the 3.0 release has been so far, and how smooth the upgrade was, but it's still in EA, so I can't ;).
