  • This is my mindset on labbing defense against a character with very powerful offense or mixup, like I-No. Let me know if you have similar ideas, or go about it in a different way! I am always happy to learn.

    I love how this applies to every fighting game. I worry to much about trying to be right during the mix but it's called guessing for a reason, don't worry about the mix and play to the strength of what zone you are in! Hotashi you are a genius!

    Loved the video, I play nearly everyday against a strong I-No and yeah she's so good. The aerial blockstrings and even certain ones combo into grounded buttons. VERY fast and low empty jumps, easy burst baits. Keep up the content!

    My main struggle with i-no is how her oki is first a high/low then it turns into double high/high into frame trap/high into low/high into grab.
    I like how you're saying once you get put into that position it's too late. You gotta play to where she doesn't put you in those scenarios

    I was glad to hear someone who has a lot of technical knowledge say I-no was really good. I rememeber when the game was newer I saw Diaphone make a matchup list and didn't put anything higher then a 5/5 for her. I played her anyway because I'm semi-casual and I thought she was cool and fun. It seems fair to me, since most characters can either compete with her on mobility or have longer buttons to try to keep her out with. At least that's how it feels.

      Well i as an Ino main im here to see how people react to my pressure and id be lying to you that i always have a set route in mind so mashing 5p will often work. just know the same trick rarely works again as we immediately adjust for it. you dont have to over think it just get used to the match up and you learn to identify patterns. once you have identified some of them then proceed to learn your options one at a time. fighting games are a journey so i understand your hesitation of information overload. but i like Hotashi very analytical approach. it always help me in the nago match up.

    • @NinthSettler
      @NinthSettler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To expand a bit on that, Ukemi is a martial arts thing (mostly Judo) that refers to being able to take a fall without just like fuckin dying or worse. It's among the most basic things you have to learn while training for judo because judo training and sparring involves taking a lot of falls.

    • @enzoerfe8429
      @enzoerfe8429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NinthSettler Oh, so using your Judo example, ukemi in fighting games refers to how I should deal with the situation where I am knocked down. So it's kind of like choosing whether I backdash or super on wake up right?

    So, the best counterplay to offensive mixups is to run your own offense and prevent the opponent from mounting their offense.
    I guess the foundation of Guilty Gear is literally all about bottlenecking players into running pressure and changing the opponent's pressure into your own pressure as instantly as possible, ignoring the concept of a smooth pendulum swing from pressure to neutral before it can swing to the other players pressure.
    That's why I'm done playing until they either massively buff Ky or add a DLC character who can effectively ironwall close range pressure and mixups. Whether it's Baiken or someone else, I don't care. I just NEED retained agency and effective defensive counterplay against rushdown at close range, in order to enjoy any fighting game. Axl zoning and a bevy of high risk highly-circumstantial defensive mechanics just ain't it.

    • @IndigoMecha
      @IndigoMecha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every fighting game is based on offense, especially anime fighters, and Strive is one of the tamest ones.
      When a character directly counters offense like Baiken in GGXX, you get something broken beyond repair.
      There are players who are very patient and have incredible defense, but they don't blame the game and demand a character that counters the opponent for them. If you want defense, learn to do it yourself.
      I-No is a character whose entire point is shattering defense once she gets in, but there is still a lot to learn about fighting her pressure, and you can save your resources to have an even stronger defense.
      You missed the point of this video as it is entirely about defense. Take a step back and think about how you approach fighting games. Defense is incredibly hard in any fighting game, but you can learn to excel in it.

      Nah. Not worth my effort.
      I haven't touched a fighting game since when I posted that comment. Not even VF5US (which does better at balancing the rewards of offense and defense than almost all modern FGs).
      Honestly, I've been happier for it.
      After 21 years of playing fighters, the genre has done such a good job of pushing me away and into finding an exponentially more rewarding experience from Battle Royales (both shooter and melee combat variants), MOBAs, Roguelikes (or Roguelites like Sifu), and even PvE games like Monster Hunter Rise and Warframe.
      At this point, a game letting me play how I want and not penalizing me for it is what makes or breaks its worth to me. If a game actually REWARDS my natural tendencies towards a slower measured approach, then even better. And bonus points for having enough balance, flexibility, or elements of random to make a meta matter less and enable more freedom of viable choice.

    • @IndigoMecha
      @IndigoMecha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@s_factor_sam I can't agree, I think fighting games are some of the most rewarding, and many of them are fairly balanced. I'm a very slow and defensive player, too, you're rewarded for any play style you can back up. But fair enough, it's not for everyone.
      Battle Royales and MOBAs tend to only frustrate me. But I do love Monster Hunter and roguelites. Glad you figured out what you really enjoy in the end, at least. I've seen people who seem miserable but keep forcing that on themselves.
