    Patriotism means to stand by the country, it doesn't mean to stand by the political parties. If anyone have different opinion or viewpoint or critics of some policies that doesn't make him/her anti-national or terrorist. Jai hind.

    • @GBKL1
      @GBKL1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      It is very hard to make this thing understand to the public out there.
      A true nationalist would always stand by the country and think what is correct for the country and whats wrong.
      Even if that wrong part is coming from the government.

    • @Popat2415

      Standing by the farmers is patriotism, irony is the antinational right wing is calling farmers antinational when the farmers sons from punjab are in the army.. imagine how they would feel. It is the same when a chief of a fanatic radical right wing religious organisation says that only people from particular religion can be patriotic. It is these people are a blot to our secular nation

Where is constitution?.where is justice? Where is democracy? And that journalist who celebrated army men's martyrdom and used it for TRP is given support and roaming free.. what a contrast

    Vir Das was spot on with the swimming pool analogy. I am slightly right wing and I support BJP because I believe in their economic policies and vision for the country ( you don't have to agree with me on their policies, its okay), but I also support Freedom of expression, it is the fundamental of democracy. Unfortunately, like Vir Das said, I am in a swimming pool with a bunch of idiots and they are ruining it for educated, informed people who are right wingers. I don't think that comedian should have been jailed for something he hasn't said. Even if he said something, they should have kicked him out instead of making it a big deal. Nowadays everyone wants rights and freedom of everything. But very few remembers their duties. With fundamental rights you also need to get involve in fundamental duties. If you are demanding rights make sure to do your duties as well. In the name of freedom of speech one can't disrespect other religion or sentiments. As the fundamental duty of a citizen is to promote harmony and brotherhood among all sections of the people transcending religious , linguistic and regional or sectional diversity. First do your duties and then demand rights. What happened to Munawar is vey bad. He didn't deserve it , I personally watch and enjoy his videos and no where did he ever crossed the line. But there are many other comedians who does it in the name of freedom of speech. With Munawar 5 others were also arrested and they are still in jail. The focus was on one person because he belonged to a certain community. Such selective narrative is also bad. As depending on the hot topic narrative will keep on changing . And this is very harmful when it comes to justice and equality.

    • @JustGotALife
      @JustGotALife 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anvi3969 actually you can define art form because there are several laws and regulations, freedom and responsibilities applied based on which category of art it falls into.
      The reason why it becomes even. more important in stand up comedy is because comedians have been long known to push their social agendas through the medium of comedy and when they are called out they say oh it was just a joke, I'm just a comedien you shouldn't take my words seriously.
      Which then makes you think at what point their speech becomes comedy vs his real opinions and preachings.
      They blur this lines as and when they deem fit to get away with it.
      Like in this case itself, what part is comedy and what's not.
      Here this two guys are taking how some of things Vir das says are right and took it as a preaching, but shouldn't we consider all that as jokes, we should be a like "hey when vir das said government is suppressing our freedom of speech, he is joking, he doesn't meant it, it's a joke, in reality they aren't".
      Since when did comedians became moral arbiters.
      Most ironic being kunal who says its a political comedy and this are jokes nothing serious, but then actually shouts in the face of arnab goswami. I don't know anymore who I blind bhakts or the whole India itself

    • @anvi3969
      @anvi3969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JustGotALife why can't comedians be moral arbiters? and jokes are just the harsh reality presented in a funny manner. when the reality is pointed out in a more serious manner it is sometimes called speech. every art form is an expression of reality or fiction driven from reality. people make jokes about 'airplane food' those are funny because it's the REALITY that plane food sucks. if the plane food was nice and yet people made jokes, those wouldn't be funny in the general case. people just get offended or think that joke should not be made on reality when the joke is about a human or group in particular. people are only fine with the jokes made on objects, animals, or a system.
      yes vir das made a statement about freedom of speech which was FUNNY that's why IT WAS A JOKE. A joke doesn't mean it can't be about real life. The harsh reality is just pointed out in the form of humor. both can go hand in hand

    • @JustGotALife
      @JustGotALife 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@anvi3969 lol they can't be because then they go against their own words when they say that those are just jokes and aren't meant to b taken seriously
      Another reason why they can't be is because they would cherry pick things of what they could classify as morals vs jokes as when it fits their own narrative.
      Another reason is most comedians based their jokes on observations not on actual hard facts/truth. They get often called out for being inaccurate and then they/their fans say "oh this are jokes, don't be s logical", he didn't actually meant it.
      This are some reasons why they can't be moral arbiters.
      It's no true, not all and most jokes are not based on harsh reality presented in funny manner. Infact there is different kinds of comedy, many of which has no connection with reality at all
      E. G Dark comedy, Surrealism, Slapstick comedy, Offensive comedy, Roleplay/Character based etc
      This type of stand up comedy often steers away from reality which makes them humorous.
      Expanding more on hypocrisy you don't see Indian comedians especially vir das kinds making controversial jokes on gays, transgender, lgtq etc. Why? Coz they risk offending large group of people. How IRONIC?
      They would be deemed as sexist, homophobic, etc etc.
      But why, aren't this just jokes?
      When people say Simpsons is racist towards brown ppl including vir das, well why? Aren't they just jokes?
      Why should they get cancelled?
      You see how selection bias slowly plays into the role.
      The same guy's who talk about freedom of speech, request cancellation of others when it doesn't fit their narrative.
      I remember one EIC comedian calling kapil sharma content sexist and misogynistic lool, he is judging him for his comedy while by very definition his peers making content on someone's religions will be deemed religion phobic or racist.
      And lastly if all jokes are based on reality then all those old jokes that were made on how women are dumb, illogical, etc etc must be veery true. XD

    Exactly your point Rick! The whole debate started with a comedian (who happened to be a Muslim) made a joke making fun of the Hindu Gods - Lord Ram and Sita. I know in the west making fun of Gods is not a new phenomenon but in India its a very touchy topic and comedians generally avoid taking pot shots at Gods/religion. I would expect a very similar outrage had a Hindu comedian made fun of Jesus or a Christian comedian made fun of Allah. Like u said, just because you can, doesn't mean u should. Live and let live.

    You are evaluating an incident in India with American laws. Indian constitution does not give absolute freedom of speech, and this has been reiterated many times by the supreme courts. Someone put a case on that comedian, and the police found merit in the case and arrested him, and five other comedians (not of the minority community btw which is being selectively not reported). I don't support it either, but the change has to happen in the constitution. Blaming the PM or the government is the just biased thinking, or politics.
    The fact of the matter is, the people who claim themselves to be liberals were the first to party in joy when trump was banned from twitter. Hypocrisy much? These people still don't have an answer why Rushdie's "satanic verses" or Joseph Lelyveld's "Great soul: Mahatma Gandhi and his struggle with India" is still banned in India. Selective outrage is not an outrage at all. It is just politics.

    • @Sayujya09
      @Sayujya09 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is more with the policing system than the courts. They will eventually acquit you if it is not hate speech (and sometimes even if it is hate speech, if you have connections to politicians, but that is a whole different topic). The police on the other hande are literal pawns of the state government and will act as per their orders, resulting in unlawful arrests and torture and delays in trials, only for the courts to eventually acquit. But the police are never held accountable. We have all seen how Shiv Sena, TMC, BJP and the congress have used state police to target political opponents and when the court eventually acquits, the police still face no consequences. There has to be some provision to make them independent of any political party and a system to punish police who blatantly abuse prisoners and their rights. Police reform is something we are in dire need of, but no political party in power will ever do it, as it would reduce its own hold over them.

      Complete Freedom of speech is not an easy thing to embrace, and that is the reason it was not embraced in our constitution. In a country like India, with complete freedom of speech comes assaduddin Owaisi and Praveen Togadia, Mumbai riots and Babri demolition. In India we have limited freedom of speech, and that is a fact we need to accept.

And it would be ridiculous to blame the government for the arrest of a “two time comedian” if this was an isolated incident, which it is not. Munawar isn't the only arrest which has happened, with him are disha Ravi, Umair Khalid, Anureet Watta, Gauri and so many more. Arresting people who speak against you is a sign of fascism. Just because the media doesn't report it, or just because the media paints literally every person who speaks against the government as a “terrorist" doesn't make it so. Sit through one hour of literally any news channel and tell me that they aren't completely biased towards bjp. Controlled media is also a sign of fascism. But obviously you won't see that. Because you choose to ignore the hate being spewed by the media. You choose to ignore the horrible condition of our economy (our GDP is lower than it has ever been in the past 10 years). You choose to ignore the various instances of arrests and of oppression done by the government.
