RISA: A False World?

- This video is a look into the planet of Risa, the world itself and an overview of its history. This holiday world, the home of the horga'hn and tropical bays is renowned for its facilities as a holiday retreat and shore leave destination. However so much of it, is a carefully maintained facade.

Riker ain’t complaining.
Didn’t Riker bring back the mind control game from Risa? Not to mention there’s the Academy cautionary tale Janeway and Chakotay laugh about; where a man who goes to Risa wakes up with a missing kidney. How much shady stuff goes on there too?
@@kaitlyn__L Oh I have no doubt whatsoever that some real bad happenings go on daily there.
@@kaitlyn__L In fairness that was the Ktarians, but Risa does seem like the Pattaya of the Federation.
Epstein's planet.
Can you imagine if Risa is also the most advanced developer of climate and seismic control technologies?
Imagine the chat between a Federation terraforming crew.
"So, where did you guys graduate?"
"Andoria."
"Vulcan."
*"not bad" faces*
"Risa"
*surprise faces*
According to STO, they are one of the leaders and exporters of climate and planetary seismic technology and equipment indeed.
I could imagine why Risa got into the Federation so quick. A: high tech Aliens, B: friendly at all costs diplomatic attitude, C: insane planetary terraforming possibilities. It would be foolish not to have these guys on your side when exploring and colonizing other worlds. The tech in use by Risa would bring major shortcuts to any expansion efforts by customizing new planets to fit each races climate needs.
Actually totally makes sense, they presumably met the tech and governance requirements, they're friendly and peaceful and love meeting other species. And seem to be all about cooperation and sharing, so I have trouble seeing their application for membership taking very long at all, really.
Plus think of all the spying opportunities to observe aliens gone wild. The Federation doesn't care what you do between the sheets, but other civilizations could.
"The signal for those looking to 'engage'"
I'm never going to hear Picard say that the same way again, thanks.
Risa: Climate of an idealized Hawaii and the artificiality of Las Vegas.
Risa is just the best brothel the Federation had to offer.
Is it a brothel if services are free for Federation citizens?
@@Gangerworld despite what the people trying to tell you, the federation does have money. Only Earth doesn't use money the rest of the federation still does.
@@TentaclePentacle No, no, no. It's FREE, man. The girls and guys of Risa don't WANT your money.
Considering how bloody boring the Federation is, I'd hate to see what their brothels are like. Then again, they don't take money so the space herp is free.
@@kevinramsey417 the federation may be boring on some levels but they are shown to be very indulgent and quite liberal in their sexual actions. The fact that you don't have to be a rebel or social outcast to express yourself in any number of traditionally immoral ways means that you are not as likely to get people assuming the outward behaviors and trappings typically associated with fringe liberal behaviors today.
That boring looking guy walking the corridors in his ugly beige civilian outfit may well be amongst the freakiest in the sheets just because nobody is going to judge his preferred choice of human caterpillar but with genitals as being deviant.
In the federation what we consider to be kink is just more vanilla, and likely things the most liberated among us would cringe at would still fall under that umbrella. Including creative uses of umbrellas.
Now I'm imagining a visitor that specifically wishes to see nature preserves of Risa's non-tropical paradise ecosystems. "How'd you get such chapped lips on Risa, Ensign?"
Right? I'm pretty sure that from space it looks almost like there are some deserts on the planet in the center of some of it's continents. Or at least mountains
Everybody gets "chapped lips" on Risa, Lieutenant.
In DS9 they imply that rain is scheduled.
Which makes sense, even plants can understand a schedule of weather, if they know they get a good amount of water they will keep growing, but if the environment lacks a stable water source then the plants wont grow as much or be as vibrant, it is the reason trees for instance are often times larger when next to bodies of water like lakes and rivers.
Just like Earth now
Hands down one of the best lore channels, excellent video as always.
The good videos just keep coming. Rick is on a roll. This is my favourite one of his videos 👍🤝
th-cam.com/video/dQw4w9WgXcQ/w-d-xo.html
I think they mention in one episode that they have scheduled rain. From what i remember they mention that it is supposed to rain at 4 pm wherever they were.
So, Florida?
I wonder if they schedule hurricanes every few years for each region and just close down the hotels in rotation too so nobody from offworld who isn't super-curious even knows about it.
That could as easily be advanced weather prediction.
With those expansive oceans they would need precipitation to relieve the atmosphere of moisture. Regular scheduled rainfalls, with continued mild winds, would be a lot less of a bother for the population than alternatives.
@@DrewLSsix not if the time is timed to rain at 4:00pm of whatever time zone you’re in
I’m surprised by the only 1 million guests. Maybe only parts of the planet are manipulated at any one time.
I know, for example Las Vegas averages just shy of a million visitors per week (around 42 million a year) and that's a single tourist city! You'd think that Risa would have around a billion guests and ships in crowded orbits all the time, if they guest numbers are kept so low one wonders how hard it is to get a reservation.
Star Trek gets numbers wrong all the time. They're talking about millions and billions of people in a system, when it's actually more likely to be trillions by the time space technologies are as advanced as they are shown to be. The whole concept of basically everyone living on planets except for a few thousands on ships and stations is rather idiotic. Chances are the vast supermajority of people will never set foot on a planet in societies that advanced. Why bother with planets when O'Neil cylinders, Banks orbitals and, if you have gravimetric plating and force fields, even a flat square slab habitat are so much more matter and energy efficient?
@@off_Planet Trillions? No. I'm not sure you realize how many people is a trillion. A thousand billion people. Even if you constructed massive cities with lots of room, there's no way you'd fit trillions people. And you couldn't possibly feed them all, or give them all potable water.
@@riptaway Yes, you absolutely could. The mass of mercury or the moon alone would be enough to build enough habitats for that. Planets are woefully wasteful when it comes to mass for living area. Build a few Banks Orbitals and O'Neil cylinders and you can easily support a trillion people in a system with entire continents worth of area to turn into nature reserves without a human around for thousands of kilometers. And as for water? Do you have any idea how much hydrogen and oxygen there is flying around out there in the gas giants and terrestrial planets respectively? And food wouldn't be a problem either if you have those levels of tech. Energy basically stops being a limiting factor, and with that being the case any comet, carbon-rich moon or cloud of organic molecules in space just means dinner. You need to get that space opera notion of everyone living on planets out of your head.
I highly recommend you look up the megastructures series by Isaac Arthur here on TH-cam. It's an awesome channel and the guy (a physicist and science consultant for sci-fi works) does the maths, too.
@@off_Planet I don't know if human or alien society's would be so keen on exploding into the trillion-figures, but I agree that with Star Trek levels of technology, more should and could be done to enable population growth or to redistribute population growth throughout a star system. Perhaps the warp-drive, with amazing FTL ability in combination with a large subset of colonizable planets made it more tempting to just move away instead of reshaping planetary masses amounts of materials in new space habitats.
Also +1 for the Isaac Arthur mention. His video's are always worth attention.
I loved the episode where Worf and Dax go to Risa. Terry Ferril looked so good in her bathing suit.

I think I like SFDebris reaction to Risa. In one of his reviews of a risa episode, I think the DS9, he pointed out how boring and bad every Risa episode is to him. Basically pointing out how the whole episode felt contrived and fake since its basically watered down to please TV censors of the day.
It just feels like they are trying so hard to be edgy when they can't really do anything actually sexy or edgy. It also doesn't help how some of the story lines on Risa feel very much like some sort of morality tales on how such a place could turn out bad since less than moral people hang out here as well.

It only makes you uneasy because utopia with some dark secret is a SciFi trope. You have been trained to distrust things like this.
It would be even more automatic if more people read S.P. Somtow's Inquestor books. Those are seriously down on Utopias even as a concept. They're also old and pretty obscure and he's pretty much moved on to musical work rather than writing, so no great likelihood of more folks running into his fiction.
Humans when they have first contact with a paradise world: “...so what’s the catch?”
Surprisingly sincerely friendly aliens: “what is a... ‘catch’?”
A reactionary trope at that.
I'm just remembering that episode of DS9 were Worf hates visiting Risa so much he winds up joining with a group of terrorists trying disable the planets weather control grid and return Risa to it's natural state
Uhm, based?
I think they schedule rain - I think I remember Jadzia saying “it wasn’t supposed to rain _today_” when the New Essentialist screwed with the weather modification net
Perhaps there are a number of regions that they fill then empty of guests over a certain period.
When one region is empty, they allow storms and rainfall in that area.
The storms and rain are then moved to another vacated area to "do its thing".
The area just left by the storm is the repopulated by newly arriving guests.
This cycle would repeat for all areas of the pleasure planet.
Cannot wait for the next Risa event in STO. It's easily my favorite yearly event. Wish they would add more islands to give us more variety, but it's just so comfy.

How do I feel about Risa? I have never once participated in the annual Lolhunat festival in Star Trek Online because I feel the same way you do about them. When hiding the Tox Uthat and Daniels mentions that they haven't installed the weather control systems yet, it just feels icky.
I go there every opportunity I get. Very relaxing and a good place to go to meet new people.
I think it's neat that Discovery had a Risan as its main antagonist in season 3. The choice is interesting for what it demonstrates as the effects of the Burn and how losing access to Warp travel could change a culture's outlook, especially if that culture is habituated to hosting visitors from other worlds.
I love your vids means a lot to me to be able to relax with something i just love (star trek) so thank for putting in all the effort
If somewhere in the future a Ship reach the real System, they better rename it Risa^^
well the yearly festival in sto happens in 1 spot every year. perhaps the weather control allows them to set up a rotating seasonal system of storms not per hemisphere but by quadrants. it gets turned off and natural risan weather is allowed in everywhere but the "dry" season area of that part of the year

He, and his followers would most likely have heavily objected to Risa's manipulation of nature/[their] environment. That is what they were trying to get away from, and to find an "all natural" world.
We need a trek sitcom based on Risa.
It would have to be rated M, at least.
We need a Trek version of _The Rum Diaries_ set on Risa imho
It should be like Friends. With the theme song "I'll Beam There For You."
Starring Wesley, Alexander, Naomi Wildman, Jake, a talking holographic Porthos voiced by Scott Bakula, and retcon Lal back to life. They live in 2 apartments across the hall from each other. Hang out at the Raktajino cafe on the beach cause it has Dom Jot tables. Regular guest stars would be Geordi, Paris and Torres, Rom, Morn and bring Tuvix back to life by repeating the accident but using conditions similar to how they made Tom Riker, splitting the beam and fixing one so nobody dies.
It would work. Barely any science stuff, they're just "Normal Sitcom People" in a trek world.

I mean, yeah, all-inclusive resorts always feel a little off if you think about them too hard. No matter what planet they’re on, apparently.
I wonder if the Risian's generosity stems from how difficult the conditions natural were, helping each other survive.
I've always wonder about planetary weather controls, like who gets to decided when it rains, when it snows and when its sunny and where?
Great lore! Keep it up!
Even if the climate itself is artificial, Risa's landscapes and lush jungles are still naturally beautiful. The use of climate control tech allows for Risa to share its beauty but it's not what makes it beautiful.
I'm a Trekkie and Sci-Fi fan. In my opinion, Risa is paradise. I would definitely go there to have a good time and to go swimming with a beautiful Risan woman.
Maybe there are large sections of Risa that don't really get tourists, so we've only seen futuristic resorts?

Just a thought: how do they deal with troublemakers? Can they exert enough control that they can put a perpetual storm over a single person?
Even if they're not that precise, you can arguably claim that they have successfully weaponized their very planet. They could easily stop an invading army just by turning off the grid. They survived the harshness of their world before. I'll bet they're prepared to do so again.
I really need a trip to Risa.
Huh - now that you mention it, Risa does have a kind of slightly unsettling air to it. A carefully manipulated world characterized by huge oceans, that went from planetary earthquakes, volcanoes, and year-round hurricane seasons, to "global tropical paradise" in a comparative blink of an eye, open to anyone who wants to swing by, and celebrates fertility festivals with whoever happens to pick up a carved idol?

Later, she, Archer, and Mayweather found him on another planet, where she became unsettled, and managed to captured, stun, and return him to the Vulcans.
I've always wondered... Does Risa have metropolises like NY or Paris on Earth? Or is it just a bunch of resorts dotted all over the planet?
The real issue with Risa is rather our not the romulan ale is actually good there? or does it suck and is it still illegal?
Sounds a lot like a combination of Dubai and Singapore
If Risa is so inhospitable without extensive iron control it is hard to see how its people could get to be so advanced.
The planet seems to be the Federation equivalent of Disneyworld........
Oddly enough, I was just watching the DS9 episode on Risa last night. 😁
In the orbital images of Risa, you will see real Earth landforms on the planet's surface, usually modified. Like at 1:58, center bottom of the image, is Spencer Gulf, St. Vincent's Gulf, Yorke Peninsula & Kangaroo Island, from Australia. I think the area to the right might be India. At 2:22, at the bottom, is much of Nova Scotia, and also Prince Edward island, immediately to the right. The continent above looks like a modified map of Australia itself, though.

Risa is also home to the Star Trek universe's bureau of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
I always thought that the weather suppression grid and seismic stabilizers were Federation Technology, the same the stuff thats used on Earth! I think its worth noting that 24th century Earth has weather suppression grids as well.
I wouldn't mind going there for vacation. 😁
There's a word in German "Reise" which is pronounced almost exactly the same as "Risa". Reise means "journey" or "voyage" and is often used in the context of a holiday / vacation. Similar to using the word "travel" in English to refer to going somewhere on vacation.
There's no confirmation that the world was given it's name from Reise, but it would make a lot of sense.
Is klar. Es gibt auch eine Stadt namens Riesa in Sachsen...
Risa always rubs me wrong. A tropical world is great, but it just felt like Gene's usual horndog attitude gone wild.
"And here is paradise, where everyone is pacifist and just has tons of sex."
Given how many ailments characters suffer and treatments have to be whipped up in record time (at times, none can be developed at all), I have to wonder how many outbreaks of STDs and STIs the planet endures. Realistically, it seems like Risa would be the last place Starfleet would want their members taking shore leave for fear of what they'll bring back to ships. Imagine taking shore leave from a real navy and making a beeline to Vegas or Amsterdam with the express intent of getting shitfaced and sleeping with every prostitute that walks in front of you; that's basically what people are saying when they want to go to Risa.
What's more, the fact that it's precariously held together speaks volume. Is the Risian cultural sex addiction the result of their having to breed like rabbits during the period of constant storms and quakes in the hope that some of their offspring will survive? How did they develop the tech to stabilize this, if it was such an issue? Is there a kiddie pool area of the planet, or do Risians subject their own kids to their casual sex attitudes? Is the planet off-limits to non-Risian kids?
Continuing the thread of "realism" here, I think Risa would be such a morally dubious planet, not one that "proves" cavalier attitudes towards sex can yield a literal paradise. Sex isn't bad, but too much of anything is bad, and obviously Risa is just a planet of nonstop excess. Vanessa Williams seemed barely bothered by the fact that their unique form of not-vanilla sex literally resulted in Curzon's death. Normally when playing the moralist bit and one decides to compare hedonism to violence, folks say it's apples and oranges. But here we have a literal instance of Risians causing death through sex, and shrugging it off. That's psychotic.
What timing for eating with dinner
It does sound like the Risans are clever business people. It's almost like a federation type package holiday. Wonder if Risa has a Disney world lol.
In Trek, a place like this needs to exist, supply and demand. I feel like there society chose this and everyone enjoys it. I , personally would love to take the Express to Risa! Sign me up! (and give me a few of those statues...)
Could you do a video about why federation citizens didn’t just all move to Earth which has way better living conditions than other federation planets, and what the rules on travel between federation worlds is.

There's defo a massive series in the Star Trek worlds, just like the Cultural Index.....I'm starting my planet library now
I do believe that in the Borg trilogy written by David Mack (forgive me I have forgotten the name of it) Risa was destroyed by the Borg in the early to mid 2380's but it has been a few years since I have read the books
Risa as a real planet makes sense to me. A planet with a stable destiny in freedom and service.
I've long since given up the idea that there is no money within the Federation. What makes more sense is that there is universal basic income, free housing, free education and access to basic nutrition and health care. If one wants to have more than basic income, then you are allowed to earn more, based on occupation and seniority, but capped at a certain level (ie. the most senior position cannot earn more than 10x that of an entry level position, or something to that effect). All based on both an economic credit system and a social credit system. IMO.
As someone who spends a substantial amount of negative thoughts on the current weather, I really don't have much of a problem with the level of environmental control used on Risa. But I, too, hope that the original ecosystem was preserved. Maybe on another planet, maybe on a part of the planet?
I like to think that Risa brought the terraforming to the Federation when they joined, allowing less hospitable planets to be colonized.
Risa, a Minecraft jungle biome but it's the whole planet.
Do they have Sharks on Risa, or is it just one big swimming pool ?
I feel like Risa is sort of the Star Trek equivalent to Dubai. At least from the sense that Dubai is a modern, green city in the middle of a desert.
I didn't know Risa had natives. I always imagined it as a teraformed or artificially controlled biosphere with a Ferenghi as owner who somehow had a deal with the federation that allowed their citizens a basic level of entertainment for free.
Especially the always available yet free to play sex workers don't feel like a cultural trait of the natives.
Risians are basically humans, but they got stickers on their foreheads so you know they're alienses.
Risa has 3 billion natives and 1 millions visitors. So for every Risian who attends a visitor there will be 2999 Risians partnering with each other.
Maybe Risa's internal economy pays these "sex workers" to interact with aliens. Maybe Risa's legal system forces their criminals to perform these duties. Maybe Risa's spiritual leaders select a lucky few to share their special blessing. Maybe Risa's government requires these "workers" to earn or buy this privilege. Maybe these Risians are lounging around Risian vacation resorts because they're on (and want to enjoy) their vacation.
@@pwnmeisterage With 3 billion people and a worldwide culture that isn't judgmental about sex, odds are that enough of them just think sex with "exotic" foreigners sounds fun to ensure that supply meets demand. Only a million tourists, after all, and some of those (especially ones from the nonhuman species) won't be there for sexy times with the natives anyway.
@@pwnmeisterage only a million tourists? That seems really low for a planet that's so heavily focused on vacation and tourism. Like the small islands of Hawaii get several million tourists a year so if that were scaled up to the size of a planet it seems like one could expect way more visitors
