Thermostat Housing New METAL Replacement 05-10 v6 Ford Mustang

  • This is a step by step for replacing the thermostat housing (and thermostat) for a 2005-2010 v6 4.0L Ford Mustang. Also, there is now an aluminum thermostat housing/water outlet available to replace the plastic thermostat housings. Whether you are installing a plastic or metal housing, this video aids in the installation. Both types are the same install process shown in this video.
I'm not affiliated with the company that makes the aluminum ones but I have found these on Amazon and eBay. I prefer them because I have had 4 plastic ones leak on the same car and was glad to find an aluminum part that will hopefully solve the problem.
let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them.
    Tips:
--Assemble the upper and lower housings together with thermostat in place. This helps insure a strong seal at the base.
--Use a gasket making material in addition to the bottom o-ring because this o-ring can become flat.
--Inspect the small hose coming from the water pump (hose mentioned in the video). Clamp this hose at the bottom portion before installing the new thermostat housing as it will help it to not move around.
--The 98" lbs of torque is for both the metal and plastic pieces. However, you can go to 100" lbs for the metal parts if desired.
--When adding coolant, be careful. The coolant flowing to the heater runs through cycles but the thermostat is still closed at first. When the thermostat opens, hot coolant may come out of the reservoir fast. You are able to simply add fluid and tighten the cap. The reservoir is designed to remove the air bubbles but I like to do it the way in the video at first. It is your preference. If you add fluid and close it up, it's good as long as the engine is running well. Just keep the heat on for 15 min. and WATCH THE TEMP. GAUGE FOR OVERHEATING for any process you use.
--Recycle the used coolant because it is toxic. You can call around to various shops to see if they will take it or you can call the city that you are in and ask if they have any place to recycle it.
--Be sure to remove the negative battery connection when disconnecting any electrical components.
By viewing this video you are agreeing that I am not liable for anything, ever.

Hello Mike. I wanted to thank you. I was losing coolant and I had no idea where it was coming from. Looked up the symptoms on google and I figured out it was the thermal housing leaking. Your video is very much appreciated. I don’t know much about cars but your video gave enough knowledge and confidence to change the housing myself. Saved me a lot of money. Thank you.

so i was in a rush this morning to work, only had 30 minutes to swap this guy out, and this video really guided me. although i didn’t have time to let it run without the cap. since then my heater only blows cold and AC… also a very old thing, wiper fluid isn’t coming out. gonna try letting it idle for a bit in a few hours without the cap to see if that helps at all

just recived my replacement metal thermostat housing in the mail today and it came with an important note for the 2005 model...The upper housing will hit the throttle body heater. To use the metal upper housing you will have to do the throttle body bypass or grind the upper housing down at the contact point and or heater box on throttle body.

You know I was having a real hard time determining where this leak of radiator fluid was coming from ...I actually could smell the coolant from inside the car! I opened up the hood and found coolant puddling and corroding on top of the engine in the tunnel created by I guess the air intake on top of the engine ....my first thought was Oh Sh!t warped heads or head gasket leak. But upon further inspection there was some crusty residue around the seams on the thermostat housing.! Oh there is a god thank you! I though to my self ...shirly there must be a YOU TUBE video on this problem and bam your's was at the top of the playlist!
Shame on you FORD for designing to fail or planned obsolescence with cheap plastic parts that can't take the heat of the engine coolant! Aluminium or a metal housing seems to be the only way to go and should have been in the design specs from the get go. If Henry Ford could see the money saving cheap shortcuts the the company that bears his name sake does today I'm sure he'd be turning over in his grave like a PTO on a Ford 8N tractor!!
Thank you Mike for finding the metal housing after you installed how many plastic ones that failed....I think you said 4 in your vid ? I have a 45th edition 2009 Mustang with the V6 and I hope the housing will clear the throttle assembly....hopefully he said with no modification. Your video was very well produced... you must have a production background. Not one moment did I say to myself I can't see what your talking about and I feel very confident going into this repair. I took notes and also created a tools list along the way and also thank you for mentioning the tork specs and bolt sizes ....very helpful complete and concise info! I have to schedule to work on my car when I have a couple days off from my day job just to leave fudge factor time to find another ride just in case I futz up the job. I would like to see more videos from you. on the 'Stang I would also like to donate some bucks to the cause ....because I think you saved me a $hit load! Thanks Again
