Making a Flashy Ponytail Cover: A Silversmithing Tutorial

  • This video tutorial demonstrates how to make an attractive decorative silver hair ornament. This is a simple but elegant design to cover a rubber band securing a ponytail or braids. For this video, I made a simple hammered version, but fancy variations and using other metals like brass or copper are also possible. I think this one turned out quite pretty and flashy. This project only has a single soldering operation. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

I see a jillion applications for this. The surface can have a favorite theme on it. That's a million themes, right there.

You are the only other person that I've seen make these (besides me), what a surprise! And a treat to see your technique. I really like yours. 👍

Thanks! One of my friends started making them about 15 years ago, and I liked the idea so I started making some as well. Not sure where she saw the idea:)

Luv that idea. Reminded me of my previous biker life when we wore black leather hair wraps to hold your pony tail during a ride. Thnx for the video & the very sweet memory!

Wow 🤩 Years ago I bought a Norse silver braid holder it reminds me of American Indian style. If you watch any historical type K-dramas or Chinese you will be amazed and envious of the hair accessories.

Thanks Katie Jo. I wish I could take credit for this idea, but I think this sort of design has been around for some time. Take care!

I make these but I put a loop on the back so you can connect the ponytail holder directly to it and the holder can't fall off. I love the look of yours too !

A really useful item; as I have a silver hair clip from years ago. I would suggest especially since you put stones on some and I know that your customers would be heartbroken if they fell out, to add another wire to hook it at the bottom. This will keep it in place. I lost my handmade hair item in a park while on a ride & couldn't recover that one. 😢 Love your videos and I thank you for your valuable knowledge.

That is super cool 😎! Very clever! You could do a cool design on it too. But it looks good just like it is.
Question, Can you use the same pickle for silver and copper? Or do they have to be two separate ones?
Again that is so pretty. I have long hair so I will be making one for me and my daughter and 2 granddaughters!
    Thanks for your knowledge!

Glad you like it Tammie! I’ve never had any problems using the same pickle. Maybe someone who works with copper a lot can address this in the comments? It could be that you get better results with a particular type of pickle for copper. I just have never really looked into it. Thanks for the good question Tammie!

If I make that I'll leave the small hook at the bottom of that pin, so it will stay in better.

Did you ever make the hair kabob video? I don’t see it! I loved this one!
