    Great videos Liam & Congrats on hitting 1K subscribers. I happened on your channel a few weeks back and was showing them to my wife who is from Phippsburg, down in the Southern Midcoastal area near Bath. We come back up there ever couple of years to vacation (will be there this Summer actually) and I must admit that as an amateur Wildlife and Landscape/Seascape photographer, I'm in Heaven. One of my favorite images that I have taken is of a Barred Owl. A few years back, as I was floating down a creek with the current in my canoe, I could hear an owl calling out in the distance, but never got a visual until I floated underneath of it. So, after what seemed like a lifetime of canoeing back & forth upstream against the current and then floating back downstream underneath the curious bird, while struggling to track the canoe against the current and the wind, and trying to stay focused on the owl, I was finally able to capture an incredible image.

      That sounds like it must have been an exhilarating capture...and maybe one that required a workout haha. I'm glad that the persistence paid off. Part of what makes photos memorable are the challenges or unique circumstances to get them. I do a lot of landscape photography as well and while it's a rush to get perfect lighting, nothing compares to seeing that sought after species. My most recent encounter with a Barred owl was walking right out back in the woods walking my dog after work. He spooked one that was perched maybe 5 feet off the ground and flew higher up into the tree. Lucky for me we got to stare at one another for a minute or two. Unlucky for me, I didnt have my camera!
      Phippsburg is the best. I'm down that way for work dang near every week. Hope to hear about your trip this summer! Thanks for watching my videos, it means a lot!

    Favourite photo: I just started taking bird pictures, bought a used cheap bridge camera. I set up a feeder in my backyard and was able to take a picture of a song sparrow that was wary of approaching it, got a great shot of it playing peekaboo in a hedge.

    Liam, congrats on your 1k subscribers! Keep the videos coming, love your work.
    My favorite recent photo taken isn't even my best technically "good" photo. Its of a great horned owl. I've been living in CO for 2 years now and I am just starting to track owls so I was very pleased to be able to find an owl pair in the same spot, twice, two weeks apart. I take so many typical mammal pictures you'd expect to see in CO, that finding the more elusive animals is a treat.
    If we want to go with technical favorites, it would be of a Red Tail Hawk snacking on a prairie dog. Nature at its finest and I couldn't believe I saw it all happen. Some of my last year moose pics also rival for favorites. Thanks!

    • @liamdmcinerney
      @liamdmcinerney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, Brittany!
      First, that's awesome you were able to get some shots of great horned owls. Finding them is a challenging task so that's an accomplishment of it's own even if you don't deem them your "technical" favorite! And to the red-tailed hawk...what an epic capture! Sounds like Colorado needs to move to the top of my travel wish list.
      BTW just followed you back today on Instagram....I absolutely love your shots of the elk. Especially the one mid-antler shed. Very cool. Cheers!

    My favorite recent photo is of a long-eared owl roosting in a conifer. It's the first time I've found one that hadn't already been reported and that I wasn't explicitly looking for. The photo is pretty cluttered with branches and needles, but to me that underscores how tricky they can be to spot, and reminds me to keep an eye out for them. I'm always happy to see an owl.

    • @liamdmcinerney
      @liamdmcinerney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, Bryce! That sounds like an epic shot and long-eared owls are beautiful! I always think about the whole cluttered branches stigma with bird (especially owl) photography. It takes a great deal of skill to spot/track a bird and that should be celebrated. Congrats on that shot!

    For my favorite photo i took it was a Great Blue Heron standing gracefully at the water's edge. Armed with my Canon 40D and Sigma 150-600mm lens, I seized the chance to capture its serene presence.
    Earlier, I had watched the heron hunt with precision, its focused gaze fixed on the rippling waters. With each careful step, I approached, determined to capture its elegance. As the heron glanced up, I clicked the shutter, freezing the moment in time. It was a fleeting encounter with nature's beauty, a reminder of the magic found in the wild.

    Regarding tripods: Most of the time, I'm using my Canon 100-400 handheld; however, I also have a 500mm that is much heavier. I normally use a monopod with it, which I love. I don't care much for lugging the tripod around but last night I was taking photos of owls that were in the dark branches of pine trees. Using the tripod, I was able to get shutter speeds as slow as 1/125 of a second, which gave me enough light to shoot with without boosting my ISO. I couldn't have done that with the monopod.

    • @liamdmcinerney
      @liamdmcinerney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup, tripod for lowlight scenarios are a must (unless youre using a shorter focal length), but at 400mm good luck getting a sharp image with a monopod...even if it is a relatively stationary owl! Sounds like a fun evening of owl photography!

      @@liamdmcinerney Thanks! And yeah - Hoh is crazy. It's one of those places where everything is SO dense and lush that it seems like it should be great pictures everywhere you look, but the hard part (for me, anyway) is finding compositions that are simple enough!
