  • The British History of India is marred with many moles whose loyalty to their British masters affected the fight for independence at every step. While we remember the revolutionaries and satyagrahis it is also important to recognise and remember those who served their foreign masters and did disservice to Bharat Mata.
The Revolutionary part has been practically wiped out of our history books. Had history been written by a different set of people, then perhaps our vocabulary would have been different. For whom we call the ‘Revolutionaries’ now, we’d probably call ‘Nationalists’.
And those who have usurped the word ‘nationalists’, we’d call them the ‘loyalists’.
Sanjeev Sanyal on the Revolutionaries and the collaborators - the India we (often) forget.
    About the Speaker:
Shri Sanjeev Sanyal is an Indian economist and popular historian. He is a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. Shri Sanyal is also a well-known urban theorist and write and has authored several books on Indian history and civilization. Prior to his present post he was Principal Economic Advisor to the Government of India and has also represented India on a number of international forums.

Nationalist must be replaced by Civilisationalist..
Because INDIA is not a NATION... its a Civilisation...
the term "NATION" is a Biblical Christian Term which means a Chunk of Area having ONE LANGUAGE, ONE GOD, ONE KING, ONE PROPHET and ONE RELIGION....
and from the Nation it becomes Nationality..

And for creating a sense of inferiority when thinking about India vis-a-vis the rest of the world and also a sense of ‘learned helplessness’. This in turn has encouraged rampant corruption because there is absolutely no sense of fellow feeling towards other Indians or any sense of patriotism for the motherland. This is why education of young minds is important. It’s important that every citizen feels a sense of commitment and gratitude towards one’s own nation. Presently there is only a sense of contempt towards the motherland and its customs and rituals, and young people are leaving the country by the lakhs every year to study abroad and then seek employment and establish themselves for a life overseas. One cannot blame them for doing so because they have been systematically brainwashed to be blind to the glory of India and to long for validation from the white man.

I wonder what ‘shade of gray’ he would paint General Cariappa, and the entire British Indian Army, which fought and defeated the INA in the Burma front. General Cariappa was personally decorated by Lord Mountbatten for his performance in the Burma front. Subhash Bose had expected men like him to join him the moment he entered India. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. This is a very difficult subject which points the finger at many of our ancestors, not a few stray traitors here and there. The British acquired and kept India with the collaboration of Indians; they lost India when that collaboration was withdrawn - it now appears thanks more to Bose than Gandhi.

Wow. Good research. I do know there is a major street named Cariappa marg in central delhi. The name makes more sense now since there is also a tughlak road as well as aurangzeb road (it still is present next to the vfs area, but is a much smaller road now)

It is an apt question. Most probably, it was Dr.Romesh Chandra Majumdar, the doyen of Indian Historians, who explained that INA's entry to India from Burma was not known to the Indians. The countrymen was told,it was the Japanese who are marching towards India.Netaji was under the impression that the moment people come to know of INA coming to liberate, the people will join the movement. But the opposite happened. Most probably, that is the biggest failure of Netaji as a Statesman, otherwise he was without any doubt the Greatest Hero of Freedom movement of India.I may also add,we are a nation of treacherous people. One example will suffice.Gen.Dyer ordered firing but the people who fired their countrymen were our own people. Many more things to be told. But it is refreshing to see a bunch of these young Intellectuals, Historians who are unfolding the dark secrets.

Like Mr Karan Thapar whose grandfather Kunja Behari Thapar who donated money to the fund raised for Mr Dwyer after Jaliwanwala Bagh, Mr Sova Singh and his son Tejbir ( father of writer Khuswant Singh ) one the well known contractor of lutyen's delhi who identified and gave testimony against Bhagat Singh. These names should be taken publicly without any hesitation. There should have been detail account of these collaborators and their elite descendants. If we still shame and blame the descendants of the family of Mirzafar till date then why not these self proclaimed intellectuals of our country.

When Khudiram and prafulla chaki took two escape routes after trying to kill magistrate Kingsford....it was nandalal Bannerjee, a police officer who suspected his fellow train paasenger Prafulla chaki and at one station cabled mokamah ghat police.
That policeman was Ronnen .. another Bengali. Both tried to capture chaki but he shot himself twice..
In order ascertain the true identity..chakis head was severed and send to Calcutta...an outrage which was compensated by the killing of these two officers by the revolutionaries....just like the avenging of The Javdekar brothers.

I was moved by the account of how contractors acting on behalf of the British abducted people for recruitment in the British army. The French did something similar in Senegal, and Ousmane Sembene made a film called Emitai on the history. I believe that the French ambassador to Senegal walked out from the premiere of the film. I wonder why Indian filmmakers have made no film on British atrocities. In fact, I cannot think of a single Indian film that would make a Britisher even fidget in his seat, let alone walk out in protest. The mind of the ruling class in India remains firmly colonized.

This is a very important and crucial topic. We must revisit the independence movement especially with respect to the "collaboraters". We must do so with objectivity in an honest context of early aggregation of Indians in any meaningful way. We may avoid condemnation or judgements but nevertheless acknowledge in fullest measure what these different sections actually did and represented.

Sri aurobindo is my guru in every sense of the word and one of his book (secrets of the veda) made me realize what India is all about not only spiritually but also in a practical way, and his booklet hymn to durga is so powerful that it energizes when I feel low and gives strong belief that India will rise again in all its glory. But in Bengal no politician ever takes his name ,I know for a fact why they don't, also Bengal has not been able to produce another Bose or aurobindo for that matter. Listening to today's topic ,it was enlightening but makes me feel so sad and horrible for people who gave their lives and independent India 's pm decided to erase them from our memories ,except that they never for show the magic of internet and brilliant children of mother India like sanjeev sanayl and many others who revived the glory of the unsung heroes and made them real and relevant for us.Thank you

Sri aurobindo was a great soul!! May Indian mothers give birth to millions like him!!
Meanwhile, one must realize that Nehru was just selected as PM by MK Gandhi and was rejected overwhelmingly even by the Congress committee!!

Indian Communists during the 2nd world war had no contact with the Soviet communists directly. They have to receive their instruction from the British communist party who for their existence got to support the British Government. According to the autobiography of Arun Ghosh who was the president of the Indian Communist party and went to Moscow in 1953 to meet Stalin, Stalin rebuked him for not supporting Netaji Subhas as the Soviet Union recognized the Azad Hind Government in 1943 and had allowed a consulate of the Azad Hind government in Omosk, the alternative capital of the Soviet Union during the war. In 1945 Netaji went there and was allowed to stay in comparative luxury in a separate house until 1946.

Sir why no one is writing about Veer Savarkars elder brother Ganesh Savarkar?
Ganesh Savarkar’s pro-active resistance against the British colonial government in India, caused him to be transported for life to Cellular jail.
For this unfair deportation, the then collector of Nasik, Jackson was assassinated by Anant Laxman Kanhere, another unsung freedom fighter, in direct retaliation.

That was really interesting. The threads that run thru all our countries and communities are so similar in nature. I've prided myself on being able to see it because it's an attribute i don't think many posses, but once you do, you see trends and patterns and resistances to stimulus that can all be manipulated. It makes you into a catalyst. Are you going to apply an ethic ? Or are you going to secumb to self-interest? The common good or your own preservation? It goes on like that....
I see a culture emerging in the developing world that is applying this knowledge for a new world order that is lifting, not suppressing, and it's a profoundly good thing. We can apply ourselves to a cause that is bigger than ourselves and emerge proud. I am, in jus being able to watch it.

Mr Sanyal if I may say is a talented bright mind. Such minds ought to be usefully engaged in result oriented research on means of helping India’s growth & development. Delving into the past to unearth names of so called “ collaborators…” is in my view simply a futile pastime. Such pursuit will not alter history. It would only perhaps spread poisoning peoples minds. It was mentioned that some collaborator in Bengal became rich while a Nationalist became poor & a victim. Is Mr Sanyal going to contribute to reorder a more even Justice dispensation & compensate for injustices of the past century & before ? I would sincerely hope that our all round efforts be focused on building a more just & prosperous Society.Let bygone be bygones. Think of today & work for a better future.

When the British finally left, there were a large number of so called “ princely States…” under Rajahs & Maharajahs who also had their standing Armies. Could the colonial British prosper without “ coexistence “…&… “cooperation..” by these Rajahs ? The support & collaboration extended by these Indian Royals need to be spoken about more widely too. Some of these Royals/ Princes also played Polo not only in India but even on Royal Polo grounds in Great Britain. Will the contribution by Indian Royals be also researched & publicised in the next book or public presentation ? A factual unbiased research into the role played by Indian Royals in accommodating the East India Company & its transition into the domain of the Imperial British Crown would perhaps have a much bigger impact on the study of “collaboration”.

Notable among the infamous loyalists in the South India (Not included in this lecture) was EV ramasami nayikkar who started the justice party and later the Dravida Kazhagam with collaboration of the british and sow the seed of anti Brahmin sentiments all over the Tamil areas (now TN) and persecuted the Brahmins. He even created a road map for ruling India under the British
