This was a fantastic scene. Perfectly encapsulates intergenerational family trauma, fear that you can't control your child anymore, and the terror that your they're going to make the same mistakes that you did (or worse). It explores the conflict that erupts from different parenting styles, but the common thread of intense fear when your child makes a mistake and and you don't know whether it's an anomaly or going to become a pattern. Scenes like these are why the series was so beloved
Yes but to be honest, I think what Emily said made Lorelai realize that even girls like Rory can get pregnant even if they say they aren't having sex and are considered the smart ones so I think she was listening to her mother's advice even though it was harsh. If Emily wasn't there the reaction probably would have been no big deal. I love the actress who plays Emily. Amazing in every scene. I don't like what the mother said about Lorelai's house and life, but she is right about other things. Maybe she gives Rory too much freedom. Lorelai's reaction was justified no matter how well you think you know your teen and I think she listened to what Emily said.

She was just upset. Scary when your kid doesn't come home and then what Emily said hit below the belt too and made Lorelai remember the hardships of her own experience as a teen mum. It was all too much in that moment.

I wouldn't say Lorelai is a bad mother; in fact, the problem with her parenting is that she doesn't mother *enough*. She tries to be Rory's friend, which runs directly counter to her responsibility to be a parent.

this is kinda deja vu becuase remeber when Lorelai thanked Richard for standing up for her when Christopher's father was attaking here and rory and then rory comes to the house and hear lorelai and emily arguing and then rory thanked her mom but then lorelai yelled at her. ( I just love the fore shwdowing)
Rory was right her mother knows her and knows nothing happened but Emily got into her head. This is a perfect example of generation curses I felt bad for them all , I wished they included the possibility of therapy after moments like this.
Every conflict between Emily and Lorelai comes back to, "You ran away when you were 16!" Very like many personal conflicts in real life. Emily was way, WAY out of line. Lorelai won't win any awards for Mother of the Year, but Emily is not only unhelpful here; she's actively sabotaging her daughter. Lorelai was completely justified in throwing her out.
I hated Emily the most in this scene. "Just like you ruined your life" Lorelai didn't ruin her life. Emily really did suffocate Lorelai. She gave her stuff, but not the ability to be herself. No wonder she rebelled. I would have, too.
Emily killed Lorelai from inside out. Every essence that she saw it on her she cutted. I know the feeling. That’s why Lorelai ran out of that house. To get out of that madness and to protect Rory. Emily was completely out of line and I would put her out of my house too.
I can understand that but Lorelai just seems like such an irresponsible and messy person. It’s like her life is never in order and keeps treating her daughter like a friend which is really cringey.
Dang this part of the show always hit. My grandmother exactly like Emily and Lorelai being like my mother and I as Rory all exact. It happened once to me too :')
Yeah it's strange that throughout the entire series Lorelai never once grounded Rory for anything. Sure Rory's a good girl who rarely does anything bad, but she did have her moments. For example, Rory Paris and the Puffs got caught by the principal breaking into the school in the middle of the night and Rory's explanation that she took the principal's advice to get close to new friends simply isn't enough to be spared from punishment. But the worst example would be when Rory skipped school and snuck off to New York by herself to meet Jess and Lorelai wasn't even angry at her for this
Okay, everyone was out of line here. Emily for yelling at Lorelei and telling her she threw her life away because she got pregnant young, which is something you do not say to your child. Lorelei because she knows Rory, and she said Emily she trusted Rory, but she still acuses Rory of sleeping with Dean because of what Emily said. And Rory because, okay, you fell asleep and it was an accident, but you don’t get home at 5am and have the nerve to yell at your mother, when even though you didn’t plan it, it was your fault staying out and scaring the ever loving crap of your family.
It's very common to say one thing to somebody and say something else to another, and it doesn't have to mean you're being willfully inconsistent, either. We see later on when Lorelai basically tells Chris how she sabotaged her relationship with Max because she couldn't get past the idea of being with Chris, but then later on when talking about Chris to Rory (while her relationship with Luke was beginning) that, no, she didn't let thoughts of Chris sabotage things with Max at all. She knew the truth, but she wasn't going to admit it to her daughter. In this case here, of course she's going to defend her daughter's integrity when it's under attack by somebody else. Similarly, when Rory is back and it's her turn to face the music, she isn't going to be afraid to ream her out for being irresponsible like that. It might've been an accident which makes it understandable, but it doesn't mean she's free from blame and criticism for it, either. She had to own her actions. Please remember as well that a decent part of this relationship had begun with Rory kinda sneaking around and not saying much about Dean; that she was reconsidering going to Chilton because of Dean (which Lorelai had to hear from other people to deduce), or at the end of Rory's birthday party when she got her gift from Dean in a dark place outside their house that Lorelai only saw because she happened to look out the kitchen window in that moment and see it, and then of course you throw in that Lorelai heard about Rory and Dean's kiss second-hand as well...all of this stuff was information Lorelai got from other people, second-hand, and not volunteered at all by Rory directly. Whether it had happened here or happened sometime in the near future, it wasn't an outrageous concern for Lorelai to think that she might also hear about Rory's, ahem, "first time" from somebody else there, too. It would only be continuing a pattern of sorts.
This scene beautiful illustrates how generational trauma works when you had a narcissistic parent. Emily’s voice is Lorelai’s inner critic - whether Emily is there in the house or not, her critical voice lives inside Lorelai’s head. After hearing her inner critic for so long, Lorelai finally snaps at Rory, out of fear - fear that Lorelai isn’t doing a good job with Rory, fear that she is a bad parent, fear that Rory will turn out just like her. So she snaps, and becomes controlling, just like Emily would have. This is how generational trauma is passed down.
Really good scene. Best of the show so far. I'm late to the game on this one, but after falling head-over-heels in love with Lauren on 'Parenthood' I had to check it out. Loving Lauren so far on GG. I like Alexis, too. But sadly I've been hopelessly spoiled by the immeasurable talents of Mae Whitman. I watched Parenthood because I've become such a huge fan of hers, and her scenes with Lauren were some of the best stuff I've ever seen. Alexis did well in this scene, but I can't help but feel like Lauren was carrying more of the emotional weight than she should have. Mae would have absolutely CRUSHED this scene. Those famous waterworks of hers would've been going full bore, and nobody could watch it without sobbing uncontrollably. I'll just have to keep reminding myself that when Mae Whitman started on Parenthood she was already a near 20-year veteran of screen and television. That's really remarkable. I always commit to one season of a long running series I missed before I'll commit to watching the entire series. GG is looking pretty good so far :-).

Lorelai had all the rights to be mad at Rory, simply because that's what happens if your child stays out all night without calling. Unbelievable how Rory turned things around and ending up that Lorelai is the one feeling guilty.
@@gigia95421 The bigger point is that, if cell phones were more ubiquitous by this time, it's more likely she would've gotten a text or call from Emily once they had exceeded their curfew basically saying "where the hell are you?". A text might not have stirred them, a phone call would've. In any case, it's more a matter of that cell phones at least mean accessibility, which is the real relief in all of this. Without a way of contacting them, you have no idea where they could be or what could've happened.
Rory was right in a way. It's one thing to get mad about staying out all night. But Lorelai, angry and upset over what Emily said, essentially took it out on Rory. She literally cannot say to Emily 'I trust Rory' only for her to say 1 minute later that Rory can't be trusted.

I don't like how Rory made a bad decision and made Lorelei feel bad for blaming her about it, even though she knew her grandmother just shouted to her and her mother was vulnerable. Lorelai had all right to be mad and to loose a bit of confidence in her even if she knew they didn't do anything

The amazing thing is, both rory and Lorelai has decent point here! But! If i had a mom like Lorelai, i would stayed quiet when my mom was venting like that, especially when i know how disrespectful my grandma can be towards my mom I would just say, i am sorry and stay quiet Lorelai had every right to discipline her child And then… by the morning, when both are not in their high horse anymore, i would gently tell my mom chronologically what happened that night ( i am sure in my gut that Lorelai would LOVE to clear the air

Soooo. . .was the original plan suppose to prove Emily right? With Rory getting pregnant despite Rory being smart and careful like Lorelai says? Was the message "history repeats itself" but slightly different because Rory and Lorelai would have a healthier relationship and Lorelai wouldn’t lose her as a result? Or would Rory have taken her baby to her grandparents because she was never quite the person Lorelai described her to be, or would she have gone off on her own…? I don’t know. When I see things like this that touch on what the original intended ending would have made canon, I wonder about what other things would have come with it

@@lauriecarson6483 As far as I'm concerned, all three were at fault. Accident or not, Rory should of returned home when she started to get tired. Or at least called and said she's staying with a friend for the night. Emily had every right to be worried about Rory but throwing Lorelai's past back into her face was definitely out of line. As for Lorelai she as a mom should be mad that Rory forgot to come home. But unfortunately the pain that Emily inflicted on her caused her to take it out on Rory.
Emily was horrible to Lorelai in this scene but Lorelai shouldn't have yelled at Rory liked that. Plus, Rory was in the middle of Dean and Tristian fighting at the prom or whatever so this added more stress to Rory. (I am not trying to defend Rory's actions but in this circumstance you kinda have to side with Rory on this one.)
This is why Emily is one of the most problematic characters in Gilmore Girls. She doesn't want to accept that she failed to provide her daughter the care and comfort she wanted and when decades later her daughter comes back, instead of trying to mend that relationship and rebuild it with her, all Emily did was poke fun at Lorelai and demean her choices and her career and her love interests, interfere in her life repeatedly and try to make it look as if Lorelai failed Rory and herself because they didn't have Emily around all those years.
But Rory isn't her mother. She has done nothing or shown any indication that she's going to make the same mistake. Emily was jumping to conclusions instead of waiting until Rory got home and let her explain herself.

It's not Emily or Lorelai's fault. Their argument over Rory just foreshadowed how Rory actually did in fact ruin her life, and it's not Emily nor Lorelai's fault.

Dropping out of Yale and giving up on childhood dreams is one thing. But becoming an adulterous person is a conscious choice and yes, she should be shamed for it.

Emily was way, WAY out of line. Lorelai won't win any awards for Mother of the Year, but Emily is not only unhelpful here; she's actively sabotaging her daughter. Lorelai was completely justified in throwing her out.

I hated Emily the most in this scene. "Just like you ruined your life" Lorelai didn't ruin her life. Emily really did suffocate Lorelai. She gave her stuff, but not the ability to be herself. No wonder she rebelled. I would have, too.
Emily killed Lorelai from inside out. Every essence that she saw it on her she cutted. I know the feeling. That’s why Lorelai ran out of that house. To get out of that madness and to protect Rory. Emily was completely out of line and I would put her out of my house too.

Yeah it's strange that throughout the entire series Lorelai never once grounded Rory for anything. Sure Rory's a good girl who rarely does anything bad, but she did have her moments. For example, Rory Paris and the Puffs got caught by the principal breaking into the school in the middle of the night and Rory's explanation that she took the principal's advice to get close to new friends simply isn't enough to be spared from punishment. But the worst example would be when Rory skipped school and snuck off to New York by herself to meet Jess and Lorelai wasn't even angry at her for this

Okay, everyone was out of line here. Emily for yelling at Lorelei and telling her she threw her life away because she got pregnant young, which is something you do not say to your child. Lorelei because she knows Rory, and she said Emily she trusted Rory, but she still acuses Rory of sleeping with Dean because of what Emily said. And Rory because, okay, you fell asleep and it was an accident, but you don’t get home at 5am and have the nerve to yell at your mother, when even though you didn’t plan it, it was your fault staying out and scaring the ever loving crap of your family.
Rory wasn’t out of line.
It's very common to say one thing to somebody and say something else to another, and it doesn't have to mean you're being willfully inconsistent, either. We see later on when Lorelai basically tells Chris how she sabotaged her relationship with Max because she couldn't get past the idea of being with Chris, but then later on when talking about Chris to Rory (while her relationship with Luke was beginning) that, no, she didn't let thoughts of Chris sabotage things with Max at all. She knew the truth, but she wasn't going to admit it to her daughter. In this case here, of course she's going to defend her daughter's integrity when it's under attack by somebody else. Similarly, when Rory is back and it's her turn to face the music, she isn't going to be afraid to ream her out for being irresponsible like that. It might've been an accident which makes it understandable, but it doesn't mean she's free from blame and criticism for it, either. She had to own her actions.
Please remember as well that a decent part of this relationship had begun with Rory kinda sneaking around and not saying much about Dean; that she was reconsidering going to Chilton because of Dean (which Lorelai had to hear from other people to deduce), or at the end of Rory's birthday party when she got her gift from Dean in a dark place outside their house that Lorelai only saw because she happened to look out the kitchen window in that moment and see it, and then of course you throw in that Lorelai heard about Rory and Dean's kiss second-hand as well...all of this stuff was information Lorelai got from other people, second-hand, and not volunteered at all by Rory directly. Whether it had happened here or happened sometime in the near future, it wasn't an outrageous concern for Lorelai to think that she might also hear about Rory's, ahem, "first time" from somebody else there, too. It would only be continuing a pattern of sorts.
They should call it Sleepy Hollow since it’s so easy sit down and fall asleep until 5:30am.
This scene beautiful illustrates how generational trauma works when you had a narcissistic parent. Emily’s voice is Lorelai’s inner critic - whether Emily is there in the house or not, her critical voice lives inside Lorelai’s head. After hearing her inner critic for so long, Lorelai finally snaps at Rory, out of fear - fear that Lorelai isn’t doing a good job with Rory, fear that she is a bad parent, fear that Rory will turn out just like her. So she snaps, and becomes controlling, just like Emily would have. This is how generational trauma is passed down.
Really good scene. Best of the show so far. I'm late to the game on this one, but after falling head-over-heels in love with Lauren on 'Parenthood' I had to check it out. Loving Lauren so far on GG. I like Alexis, too. But sadly I've been hopelessly spoiled by the immeasurable talents of Mae Whitman. I watched Parenthood because I've become such a huge fan of hers, and her scenes with Lauren were some of the best stuff I've ever seen. Alexis did well in this scene, but I can't help but feel like Lauren was carrying more of the emotional weight than she should have. Mae would have absolutely CRUSHED this scene. Those famous waterworks of hers would've been going full bore, and nobody could watch it without sobbing uncontrollably. I'll just have to keep reminding myself that when Mae Whitman started on Parenthood she was already a near 20-year veteran of screen and television. That's really remarkable.
I always commit to one season of a long running series I missed before I'll commit to watching the entire series. GG is looking pretty good so far :-).

@@gigia95421 The bigger point is that, if cell phones were more ubiquitous by this time, it's more likely she would've gotten a text or call from Emily once they had exceeded their curfew basically saying "where the hell are you?". A text might not have stirred them, a phone call would've. In any case, it's more a matter of that cell phones at least mean accessibility, which is the real relief in all of this. Without a way of contacting them, you have no idea where they could be or what could've happened.
Rory was right in a way. It's one thing to get mad about staying out all night. But Lorelai, angry and upset over what Emily said, essentially took it out on Rory. She literally cannot say to Emily 'I trust Rory' only for her to say 1 minute later that Rory can't be trusted.

Was the message "history repeats itself" but slightly different because Rory and Lorelai would have a healthier relationship and Lorelai wouldn’t lose her as a result? Or would Rory have taken her baby to her grandparents because she was never quite the person Lorelai described her to be, or would she have gone off on her own…? I don’t know. When I see things like this that touch on what the original intended ending would have made canon, I wonder about what other things would have come with it

Or at least called and said she's staying with a friend for the night. Emily had every right to be worried about Rory but throwing Lorelai's past back into her face was definitely out of line. As for Lorelai she as a mom should be mad that Rory forgot to come home. But unfortunately the pain that Emily inflicted on her caused her to take it out on Rory.
Emily was horrible to Lorelai in this scene but Lorelai shouldn't have yelled at Rory liked that. Plus, Rory was in the middle of Dean and Tristian fighting at the prom or whatever so this added more stress to Rory. (I am not trying to defend Rory's actions but in this circumstance you kinda have to side with Rory on this one.)

This is why Emily is one of the most problematic characters in Gilmore Girls. She doesn't want to accept that she failed to provide her daughter the care and comfort she wanted and when decades later her daughter comes back, instead of trying to mend that relationship and rebuild it with her, all Emily did was poke fun at Lorelai and demean her choices and her career and her love interests, interfere in her life repeatedly and try to make it look as if Lorelai failed Rory and herself because they didn't have Emily around all those years.
And also, her husband Richard Gilmore who doesn't like Dean as well which is his problem.
