What days we had. This horse and Paul Ruby and Clifford made racing front page for all the right reasons. I wish along with many Kauto fans that he had stayed with Clifford. We will never forget u Kauto.
It makes me angry that the owner never realised how much Kauto was loved by the people, like Clifford, who made sure Kauto's racing life was enjoyable to Kauto.
In early 2008, when I got interest in horse racing, the first thing I did was to search "best current racehorse". And Kauto Star was the name that came up.

@@robertdelacy3434 You never answered my question. You said Arkle is the GOAT even though there was a horse in his stable who was superior. So we're two comments in and you have both chickened out of a question and contradicted yourself. Record time collapse. Congrats.
An absolute legend he was. Probably the second best chaser of all time. So hard to compare different generations but Arkle was just about 5lbs better and was a better jumper. I actually feel bad saying something was better but nothing ever even got near Arkle at level weights. Only something brilliant could have won back a Gold Cup and Kauto was brilliant. Both horses seem to have been very pleasant characters as well.
What a terrible shame that Paul Nicholls could n't keep him at Ditcheat. To send him to Laura Collett to be a ‘dressage horse’ was a mistake and questions the judgment of his owner. It’s true that young racehorses who often have achieved very little can go on to other careers, depending on their temperaments and soundness but KS was a seasoned campaigner. a true chaser of magnificence not seen since Arkle; if Smith was so damned interested in pure dressage why did he not go out and part with some real money and buy a warmblood or the like and do it properly?. My belief is that he just wanted to keep KS in the limelight for purposes of his own ego.At least Paul Barber retired Denman who was an equally loyal servant , to go hunting, and by all accounts loved it. A great tank of a horse like him would have enjoyed the freedom of the chase. KS met a sad and in my book a totally unnecessary end that with better care might have been avoided. He was only 15 but he sustained horrific injuries ,one to his neck , that made him unable to stand up. There was at the time controversy about the whole debacle. FTR; many horsey experts agreed with my opinion on this topic. Very rarely there are exceptions, I recall in 1964 a chaser called Lizawake ran in 1964 GN and did convert to show jumping very successfully and was ridden by Tom Brake but never in dressage!
@@suemaher5282 thank you. The whole business upset me terribly. KS was a brave and consistent horse and deserved better.Privately , I think Paul Nicholls was gutted when Smith removed the horse.
