I loved those Oiler teams even though I lived in Winnipeg. It was great to hear Wayne give credit to the WHA Jets for the Oilers style of play. I sure was lucky to have grown up watching these guys play.
The Islanders ran them out of the rink with virtually the same roster the year before. The Oilers got their due then next season as the Isles were in their 20th straight playoff round. 5 long seasons and 5 straight finals will do that to you.

I think you can make an argument for that. Even with his years with the Bruins which was probably his better years. The Campbell Conference is a run n gun style of play while the Prince of Wales is hit hard and block shots.

First game I ever went to was at MSG in '85 (Rangers/Oilers) as a 9 yr old. Rangers won a barn burner 8-7 (or something crazy). I left in awe of the Oilers & went to a local store in Greenwich CT to purchase an Oilers jersey the next weekend. Team was incredible.
I didn't know both Cup teams the Oiler and the Islanders traded to the LA Kings in 88 one John Tonelli 4 cups NYI and Wayne Gretzky 4 cups EO they both traded 2 guys that were on the run of there lives and traded..sometimes fans would rather see a guy stay even if it doesn't suit the team...why?because they gave their life and 110% to get there teams 4 cups... I'm an NYI fan but first i'm a hockey fan..even when Gretzky would score a goal on the NYI I would admit great hockey no matter who was playing..and the league hasn't produced anybody like these 2 teams...some goals were as beautiful of a great Opera, seeing the whole play pass to pass like artwork out..My dad got the NYI account from METLIFE in 78 so as a 7-year-old and hockey player I got to sit behind the scene and eat ,have locker room time with these guys..and the first cup..after every game they would all meet at a Burger King Bobby Ny would should up with Butch and they were off to paint in there beat up painting vans...world champs making no money painting after playoff games too... crazy times
I disagree. The Best Oiler team by far was the 87-88 team. Didn't win prez Trophy, but they annihilated everyone in the playoffs and made it look easy.

Gretzky and this team literally saved the NHL...that league was on its last legs. Because of all the brawling and fighting, NBC had dropped covering the games. Teams were folding left and right...the Red Wings franchise, an original 6 team, couldnt give tickets away. Mike Illitch actually bought the Wings for a measley 6 million dollars!!. Oilers came along, thank god, and gave the league credibilty....
