Biggest mistake Leeds ever made was when they didn't offer Jack the managers job when Revie went to England. He'd proved he could manage at Middlesboro he knew everybody at Elland Road and the players respected him. He would have eased the old guard out and brought new players in. Revie recommended Giles but Jack would have been a better option. Sir Alf said he'd never known another player who wanted to know more about the game than Jack. If Jack had been the Leeds manager I'm sure the success that Revie had, had Jack would have continued and eventually the FA would have offered him the job.
decent shout, Leeds has a slow but sure decline after the 75 European cup final and sure had Jack been the manager he would have kept the club in the top 6 if not the force they were under Revie
@Rex makepeace No doubt there would have to have been rebuilding but because the team had all grown up with Jack and respected him they would have been willing to accept his decisions. One of the reasons he thought about leaving when Don Revie was appointed manager was because he was sick and tired of having managers who had no coaching qualifications and couldn't teach. He soon saw that Revie had what was needed and turned from a second division player at best into an England international.
There is a possibility that Jack may have had feelers from Leeds about being manager but being straight he would honour his contract with the club he had joined. Giles Bremner I think wouldn't have been as good as Big Jack. Revie has been a dark shadow hanging over Leeds.
@@wildbill8635 Very early in Don Revies career as part of his efforts to make the club truly professional one of the things he changed was how the team travelled to away games. When they went by train instead of going second class he had it changed so they would go first class. Unless the game was local he would have the team travel the day before and stay in the best available hotel. He also upgraded the team coach so that it was the best they could possibly get at that time. There was an incident when they were due to play one of the Sheffield sides regarding the coach. The players had all boarded when a number of directors turned up with their wives and they promptly order the players to the back of the coach and to cram together. Jack promptly got off the coach and said that nothing had really changed at the club and that he wouldn't be travelling or playing. Don Revie with the backing of the then chairman Harry Reynolds told the directors to get off the coach and find an alternative way to make their way to the match. Some of the directors were livid and this perceived affront. One of the most vocal apparently was Manny Cussins, who hadn't wanted Revie in the first place and from that point on didn't like Charlton either. When the FA approached Leeds for Revie to get the England job, Revie asked for a rise to stay the new Chairman said no and appointed Clough instead that new Chairman was none other than Manny Cussins. As Jack never actually had a contract at any of the clubs he managed I doubt he would have found that an problem, more likely Cussins never even considered him.
I remember when the Nevilles came along they tried to compare them to the Charltons. The Nevilles arent even in the same league as Bobby and Jack . The Nevilles were 2 average footballers who rode on the coat tails of the likes of other players
GOOD DOCUMENTARY YES I UNDERSTAND ABOUT BOBBY NOT SEEING HIS MOTHER HOW JACK FEELS WE WAS BROUGHT UP IN THE 60.S FOUR OF US AND WE HAD NOTHING NO FATHER ONLY OUR MOTHER AND EVERY ONE GOES TO SEE HER AND HELP HER EXCEPT MY OLDER BROTHER WHO NEVER GOES ,TO ME HE CAN DROP DEAD FOR ALL I CARE , ILL NEVER FORGIVE HIS ACTIONS OR THE TORMENT IT HAS ON MY MOTHER ALTHOUGH SHE NEVER SAYS SO I UNDERSTAND JACKS SENTIMENTS EXACTLY
Would have been a good manager for Leeds and for England. Had a good club career in management with Sheff Wed & Middlesbrough and did brilliantly either the Republic of Ireland. RIP Big Jack.
Can't see Jack wearing pink/orange/yellow boots. Nor would he pull an opponent's shirt and wave imaginary cards to get someone booked.Different world, and in all honesty it was better.
met both of them over the years , jack was down to earth and salt of the earth , bobby was aloof and an arrogant twat , bobby was the better footballer , but jack the better person , to say they were brothers they were like chalk and cheese .
@Stalin the public persona for tv interviews, is not a true reflection of what a person can be really like , in public they may come across as perfectly pleasant and likeable, but behind the cameras and in real life , they can be totally opposite to the character they portray.
If you want to write your autobiography then write it about yourself and quit with the digs at your brother who was still recovering from the loss of 7 of his best mates. One might think that there is a touch of jealousy.
nowt to do with munich , the jealousy is a two way street bobby was the better footballer , but not in jacks league when it came down to management and personality .
There was no jealousy between them regarding their football. Jack always said in public that Bobby was one of the truly ' great' players of the game and Bobby said that Jack was a great manager. Family matters are always best kept there.
It was Bobby being dominated by his wife that ruined their relationship. A classic case of bait and switch, a common tactic of women to capture a sought after man.
The thing is and no matter what, they were brothers and loved each other dearly..
R.I.P Big Jack Charlton thanks for the memories ☘️🇮🇪
RIP Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter and Harry Gregg. Sleep tight big guys.
Haunting documentary and sad to hear about continuing rift between my heroes of football
RIP Big Jack great character no nonsense defender.Wonderful man.
"She was built like a footballer" - Tom Charlton on mummy Charlton. Brilliant.
I like Tommy Charlton - he seems like a nice bloke. We've never seen Gordon though. And Robert Snr seems a very nice, down to earth bloke.

The last of the real English generation.

Jack is a more likable character. You can understand why Bobby was so shy after Munich

Bobby wasn't shy he was always so self conscious of his lack of hairline and it made him want to avoid publicity

I've heard this of Bobby from a few sources.
Jack didn't need to have a pop at his bro esp after their mum's death. V insensitive. Almost cruel.
