One of my favorite parts…Alan turns to the row of styrofoam heads and says,”Fellas… there she is, there’s the little lady who put you out of business!”
Reiner played Rob Petrie in the pilot, when the planned title for the show was "Head of the Family". The pilot didn't make much of an impression, but Sheldon Leonard liked the concept. He told Reiner they were going ahead with the show, saying "You won't fail - we'll get a better actor to play you." So Reiner didn't get to be Rob Petrie, although he did get to play Alan Brady. Apparently as a leading man Reiner wasn't too effective, but he was brilliant playing a jerky egomaniac. 😮
This episode should go down in history as one of greatest comedy classics ever. I've watched it a dozen times or more and still belly laugh. The other equally hilarious episode is "Bad Reception in Albany." The Dick Van Dyke Show is probably the best TV sitcom of all time, though there are many close seconds; Home Improvement, Any Griffith Show, Growing Pains, Family Ties, to name a few
One of top five shows of the series. MTM and Carl Riener get an extended scene together for the first time that is absolutely top notch,. She has gone from a young actress in commercials to a legendary comedienne ready to do very similar 'character-driven' scenes with Mr. Grant in the MTM Show.
And then was Oscar nominated for Ordinary People, NOT a comedy! Loved Beth & hated the dudes (Redford should have directed himself in Sutherland's role).
@@unowen-nh9ov Judd Hirsch as the psychiatrist is the purest embodiment of 'the Magical Jew', to take a cue from the trope of the Magical Negro such as in Baggar Vance.
The "apology" is still one of the greatest moments of the series. Laura and Alan have interesting chemistry, and this scene is priceless. Carl Reiner once remarked how incredible it was that they "lucked onto a girl of 23 who could do comedy." And he was so right. It's almost a shame that they were never able to find a way to get Carl on the MTM Show.
Carl is,was & ever is a exceptional, wonderful comedic genius...the man was soooooo amazing person thar was really apparent when he cast Mr.Van Dyke as Rob when he wrote it for himself & it was HIMSELF that knew he wasn't a good fit, shows exceptional talent, humbled pride...an amazing person!
Oh, my! THIS is a special episode that ranks among the top 10 of the #DickVanDykeShow. Whenever "Alan Brady" shows up, it's always special -- comically.
You're right. The part where he knocked the phone off the hook and growled into it was ad libbed and he had to hide his face in his hand to prevent his laughter from being caught on camera.
This episode was so funny, great to finally see Carl Reiner as Alan Brady, he was hilarious, they should have shown more of this character but I understand Carl probably had too much to do as a writer too.
If anyone could have portrayed Jacqueline Kennedy it was Mary Tyler Moore. Anyone with her talent could easily have shifted gears, as MTM later proved.
As funny and entertaining as this episode is, I just want to remind everyone that many people had to (and still have to) work with an extremely self-absorbed boss like Alan. It really creates a lot of unnecessary stress. I always note the "extras" interviews on DVDs where the actor shares how wonderful their Director (or Producer) was, and how that truly helped in elevating the whole production to a fine art. The loving and respect between the whole production team makes a significant difference!! ❤️🏋️
@davidross5593 It was a bit of verbal sleight of hand, a joke, completely arbitrary. Rob made it up. He knew it wouldn't matter, as long as it settled the dispute. That's why he couldn't explain it!
@5:27 min. that's where the fun really starts. Remember that famous legal question: "Have you stopped beating your wife? Yes or No." Well, a variation of this question occurs @6:31 min.: "Is the show any better now than it used to be?" @17:16 min. Do under no circumstances miss this clip! And @17:50 min. occurs a BLOOPER. Alan's foot is not supposed to come down on and make the phone drop to the floor.
I agree. Mel Cooley is mistreated by Alan Brady and Buddy and I think that there are many people who don’t consider that funny (including me). It’s just cruel.
Carl Rinner was bald and could laugh at himself. I wish we could today and not get offended by everything. This episode would be a tough one to make today due to "sensitivity " views. Glad this one got made. I laugh everytime Alan growles into the phone.
Another winner! Has anyone else ever noticed that the majority of Mary Tyler Mooer's comedic actions and gestures were unmistakable emulations of Dick Van Dyke's comedic techniques? Even her facial expressions were mimicking Mr. Van Dyke. Don't get me wrong, I love this show, and I always have, it's just that she didn't seem to have a style of her own.
How was it an imitation? Dick's main specialty was his physical and body comedy. Mary's main specialty was playing the straight-man and her expressions and dialogue delivery. Certainly no kind of imitation. How do you explain her further success without DVD then?
@@unowen-nh9ov I think that the commenter might have been saying that the show Laura was on was local. But of course, the news was put in the newspaper, so it would have gone coast-to-coast easily.
Granted this is a classic episode, and one of my favorites. Nevertheless, I must say, Dick Van Dyke looks--terrible!--in this episode. His eyes look unusually puffy and baggy, throughout the episode but for example in the kitchen scene. I strongly suspect he was in the throes of his alcoholism at this point in the series.
Alan talking to his hair is one of the all time sitcom highlights.
It had me in stitches. Really a funny episode.
And "Want a scalp for your belt?"
I'm suspect of anyone who doesn't find that scene hilarious.
One of my favorite parts…Alan turns to the row of styrofoam heads and says,”Fellas… there she is, there’s the little lady who put you out of business!”
I think this episode got an Emmy, it is such a masterpiece of tv comedy. 😂🎉😅
Every episode in the Dick Van Dyke show was brilliant, but there are some that stand out even among the other greats. THIS is one of those episodes.
"She's at the Smithsonian. They're making a statue of her mouth."
I laughed so hard 😂
Great line! 🤣But it would take a whole lot of marble to make a statue of MTM's rather large oral cavity! 😲
Mary Tyler Moore was a very gifted actress. She could do anything. May she rest in peace. She is very much missed.
But . . . could she do THE MONSTER MASH ?????? It was a graveyard smash. It caught on in a flash.
Carl was a tremendous actor, as well as creator and writer.
Some guys have all the talent!

No wonder Rob Reiner was as talented due to his father for the Dick Van Dyke Show.

Don't you think that Lou Grant was a lot like Alan Brady?
I would have loved if Carl Reiner was on the MTM. Also, Dick Van Dyke but his brother was on but I didn't think he was as funny as Dick.
Carl Riener was so much better than MTM. He would have made it great !!
It's amazing how great Reiner is as Alan Brady, and how bad he was as Rob Petrie:-).
I remember watching this episode when it first came aired. I laughed then, and laughing now.
this is the best episode. needy bald people cracks me up.
She says it SO sincerely too.
It reminded me of the Golden Girls with "We are collecting lingerie for needy sexy people".
The Dick van Dyke Show came first, of course.
One of the most funniest episodes ever. Good 😊 performance by Carl Reiner.
I LOVE when Laure said what she'd won...especially when she mimed the vacuum cleaner!!!

He didn't like playing Alan just because of that. It tremendously increased his workload.

Brilliant episode
Carl Reiner (and his friend and colleague Mel Brooks) was a comedic genius.
Alan Brady. Funniest character on this show...

My favourite childhood show. Millie waa the only one i didnt enjoy much as a kid, but her husband who was on infrequently was good too.
he became an amazing director starting with season 2. He studied it during season 1
Gotta love Mary’s Laura Petrie, sweet, sexy, cute and smart ALL IN ONE. R.I.P. MARY T.M.

Carl Reiner making fun of himself so damn funny😅
At 18:00 Carl goes GRRRRRRR in the telephone and it is not in the script, completely ad libbed and delicious.
I think Carl Reiner said this was his favorite episode of the series
The scene in this episode between Laura and Alan sort of foreshadows the chemistry between Mary and Ed Asner on her later Mary Tyler Moore Show
Wow!...the hair style is....extreme!!!!!
This episode makes you wish that Carl Reiner had appeared on the show he created more frequently.
I LOATE Alan Brady!!
I think that's the whole point of the character
R.I.P. to Johnny Patrick who also appeared in That Girl, The Andy Griffith Show, etc.
You haven't lived until you've watched this episode.
Millie is not a good friend to Laura, because when Laura needed her support she left Laura high and dry.
Yes, and in Make-Believe Land, where all of the sitcom personalities live, all of the fantasized TV characters are virtually mad at 'Millie"! 😏
Well she was probably scared of how Rob would react
They used the same plot on the Mary Tyler Moore show, when Mary divulges that Lou had a one-night-stand with Sue Ellen.
