  • In the 13th century, the Latin West and Greek East attempted to reunite by resolving certain theological tensions that had emerged in recent centuries, particularly on the doctrine of the procession of the Holy Spirit. In Constantinople, Greek theologians were broken into a few factions over how to ascertain the proper response to the Latin doctrine of the Filioque. One of those factions was a reunion effort that saw the Filioque as compatible with the Greek Patristic tradition of the Holy Spirit proceeding "dia tou uiou" or "per filium" (through the Son), whose leading voice was John XI Bekkos. In response to this, the leading voice of Gregory II of Cyprus had written a Tome against the effort of Bekkos, accusing him of the heresy of the Latins, and posited that the Greeks can speak of an "eternal manifestation" through the Son which is completely different than the Spirit's hypostatic origin, reserved to the Father alone.
Dr. Peter Gilbert, a Greek Orthodox Christian, has given his life to studying the Greek Fathers and the writings of Bekkos and will be giving us a tour through this controversy. He has an MA in Philosophy/Mathematics from St. John's College, an M.A. in Theology from the University of Oxford, and a Ph.D. in Church History from the Catholic University of America. He has taught at the academic and scholarly level for many years and serves with his wonderful voice as a Cantor at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
