really superb series, taking everything through from first principles, makes me realise that I'm not using my surface plate properly in tuning a 70 year old lathe I'm restoring
Wow what a great video!! About to go back through the rest of your videos, this project is incredible. Im doing a Metal Lathe series as well (although it may not show very well compared to a project like this hahaha) Are you using standard 4.5in/5in cutting wheels on your grinder when you use it to hand scrape? Your process looks a lot more efficient than mine lol, I’ll be making some changes to copy you a little I think hahaha
I was thinking of making the bedways for my homemade lathe, using only my homemade grinding machine. But seeing that you do manual grinding work, even after grinding on the machine, I believe it would be better to save this manual work, which I don't understand, and buy the linear guides. Do you not have satisfactory accuracy in grinding with the machine?
@@christianhulse6238 I had to buy for $ 50, this is one of the main tools needed for building machines and making tools. Nothing to replace it, you have to buy.
Coming along nicely! We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week, alongside your other ones 😎
This is pure art and i like. Shaping the metal by hand with precision.
Thank you
I am blown away! so good.
Thanks

Unfortunately, the machine has little rigidity, and manual sanding over a spot of paint is much more precise.

What’s the plate thing called that you use as a perfectly flat surface reference?
Its called a surface plate. They are usually made of granite.
