their musician skills are obvious, same as their charisma and confidence. but what sets them imho mostly apart from almost every other band, is their level of songwriting quality. a backcatalogue of around fifty songs and not a single weak or mediocre one. thank you for your reaction, first time reactions are the best.

In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed most of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics. They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters. This is one of their usual first songs for reactors, and rightly so--you get a good sense of the band. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like a demon). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. The one you compared to Kurt Hammett is Miyako and guitar is her secondary instrument. Her primary is piano because she’s also a world class classical concert pianist. She and the other guitarist, Midori, are arguably the best twin-lead guitar duo is the world. Lovebites are extremely seriously professional musicians.

Talking about hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.) Uh oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

The second visit was in Feb. 1979 (album released as "Unleashed in East" as you commented). Then, 1984, 1986, 1991, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2019. @kit Weng Year! I found that Free's first visit to Japan was in April 1971. The second Japan was in July 1972 and performed twice as opening act for Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Wow! our country seemed to be the secondary epicenter of European / American rock music. Thanks for the info.
I think comparing various bands from the Japanese rock and metal scene to each other is unfair. They're all so different from each other that I can't help but wonder about the validity of such comparisons, plus I don't think a person can elevate Band A by denigrating Band B. Moreover, dismissing what Babymetal does as jumping around or whatever does them a disservice. If you're not a fan that's fine, but the ladies work hard in their choreography and vocals both in practice and during the concert, and the live backing band is comprised of phenomenal musicians. They don't play their instruments because that's not their concept; they're not supposed to.
I see from your reactions that it only summed up to exactly one reaction to Lovebites. Maybe you listened to them without reacting? Anyhow, as you said in the video, they lost their basist and was only four. And then they did chose to not perform. It took a year and then they found a new basist and they are now going strong again. A bit different basist. Changing a solid rock/metal basist to a young slapping and tapping virtuoso that now is learning metal, and doing that very well. A great start if you want to see the new setup is "Judgement day" and "Stand up and deliver", two totally different songs. Both in studio made as a MV. We are still waiting for high quality live takes of the quality you reacted to here. But, the MV are actually quite good. The Judgement Day maybe a bit over produced. Less symphonic backing sound would have made me even happier.
Now we have the high quality live video, with Fami, their new bass player. "The Hammer of Wrath" from "Knocking at Heaven's Gate". It is well worth listening to. Actually more than that.

Lovebites doesn't have a bad song though so you can't go wrong with anything you choose their songs are such that your favorite song will tend to be the one playing at the time.
"These women are playing their instruments." You bet. Welcome to the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background:
They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed most of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics.
They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters.
This is one of their usual first songs for reactors, and rightly so--you get a good sense of the band. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like a demon). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." Miyako is also a professional-level classical concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. The one you compared to Kurt Hammett is Miyako and guitar is her secondary instrument. Her primary is piano because she’s also a world class classical concert pianist. She and the other guitarist, Midori, are arguably the best twin-lead guitar duo is the world. Lovebites are extremely seriously professional musicians.

Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". I believe the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Talking about hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)

@@salsaucedo Yeah! You are right. I had a misunderstanding that Judas Priest came to Japan for the first time in 1980s. I checked and found their first visit to Japan was in July/Aug. 1978. The second visit was in Feb. 1979 (album released as "Unleashed in East" as you commented). Then, 1984, 1986, 1991, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2019. @kit Weng Year! I found that Free's first visit to Japan was in April 1971. The second Japan was in July 1972 and performed twice as opening act for Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Wow! our country seemed to be the secondary epicenter of European / American rock music. Thanks for the info.

I think comparing various bands from the Japanese rock and metal scene to each other is unfair. They're all so different from each other that I can't help but wonder about the validity of such comparisons, plus I don't think a person can elevate Band A by denigrating Band B. Moreover, dismissing what Babymetal does as jumping around or whatever does them a disservice. If you're not a fan that's fine, but the ladies work hard in their choreography and vocals both in practice and during the concert, and the live backing band is comprised of phenomenal musicians. They don't play their instruments because that's not their concept; they're not supposed to.
Fair enough, I did not mean to degrade them, that was my “reaction” at the moment from hearing these amazing artists.
If that's the case, then people should stop referring to Babymetal as a metal band and just admit that they're a pop group backed by a metal band.

I see from your reactions that it only summed up to exactly one reaction to Lovebites. Maybe you listened to them without reacting? Anyhow, as you said in the video, they lost their basist and was only four. And then they did chose to not perform. It took a year and then they found a new basist and they are now going strong again. A bit different basist. Changing a solid rock/metal basist to a young slapping and tapping virtuoso that now is learning metal, and doing that very well. A great start if you want to see the new setup is "Judgement day" and "Stand up and deliver", two totally different songs. Both in studio made as a MV. We are still waiting for high quality live takes of the quality you reacted to here. But, the MV are actually quite good. The Judgement Day maybe a bit over produced. Less symphonic backing sound would have made me even happier.

They are in complete contrast to the norm of metal and they deliberately did it that way to be noticed in several aspects of who they are and what they bring, they consider themselves the Lone Wolf of new metal hence the fan base name "The Wolfpack"
