    You saved me a ton of head scratching using this bench for the first time. Mechanical engineer here in need to communicate with the alien species of the architects.

    Yorik, looks great! It's been a few years since I looked at the arch workbench and it's really come a long way. Thanks for your part in that. Now I just have to start using it (difficult when I have easy access to Revit)

    Thank you for a concise overview of key Arch features. I came to FreeCAD because of Arch, but found a very steep learning curve with many workbenches. Fortunately, I am hardheaded too and persevered through outdated videos, blogs, and limit tutorials. Eventually, I began to grok small parts of a very, very large "picture". This video highlighted key Arch features and simple demonstrations of their use. Thank you staying on topic and thank you very much for designing this great workbench. Arch seems to work as advertised on a source build of FreeCAD 0.18 on CentOS 7.5

    • @YorikvanHavre

      Yes that steep learning curve is still the main problem of FreeCAD. But we're trying hard to change that!

    Hi,
    I like your vid, thank you for sharing! I'm ready for further tutorials :-). FreeCAD seems to be more powerful that I have asumed. The trick with the wall 1:35 does not work. What I'm doing wrong? Is there a short-cut during generation the wall? Did you use FreeCAD version 0.16?
    Thank you very much!

    Thank you for the presentation. I'm a programmer trying to design my tiny mobile house in FreeCad and I really appreciate the effort that has been put into it. Can you also use it to calculate tensile strength and other engineering measurements?

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      there is quite a lot of calculation that you can already do with the FEM workbench, check yorikvanhavre.gitbooks.io/a-freecad-manual/content/working_with_freecad/creating_fem_analyses.html

    looks good, did you ever think of crowdfunding the project ?

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +zunder kopf This is a recurrent and continuous discussion we have... At the moment it is too complicated for us. We don't have a structure to receive money, it would take us all our programming time, that we should spend in administrative tasks instead, etc. Also, 3D CAD programming is a very special area, where you need to know maybe more about CAD than about programming, so it would not be easy to find programmers to hire. But patience, if things continue to evolve well, who knows...

    • @zunderkopf7800
      @zunderkopf7800 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Yorik van Havre thanks for your answer, as a young architect i could imagine that there would be a good support for such an project. im using revit and archicad, though i think they are rather good, i think they dont really focus on the basic needs of architects. for example too many options for things that in my opinion are not very needed. i could imagine a crowdfunded project also could benefit from those who are not statisfied withe these very expensive programms and looking for a alternative. keep on and thanks for your efforts

    Can you use these profiles for the profiles used in aluminum extrusions? That would be so useful for 3d printers and other machinery who use these

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Maker Linux yes of course. Everything you do with other workbenches of FreeCAD is usable in Arch, but also everything you do with Arch is usable in other workbenches as well. In fact, these profiles have been recently extended to become more generic, and accept more types of profiles. It would just be a matter of extending them with new types

    What happens if you now edit the model again? Let's say, make the building 2 meters longer. Will the plan be updated as well? I'm trying it and I can't. It seems I have to re-insert the model again and again after every change. (BTW, I love this software as it is opensource, like LibreCAD, however it's still not productive to use in a company. Only Blender is useful in a professional level, and in fact I already used it 2 times to make architecture renders. I wanna make some pull requests in LibreCAD, as well, becuase it's close to become a good option. In both cases, LibreCAD and FreeCAD, issues are on composing plans).

    • @code8860
      @code8860 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I reply to myself. After writing the last comment I tried QCAD and it's better than LibreCAD at this moment IMHO. QCAD saves the printing options for every drawing, as it should be (logical). QCAD looks more stable than LibreCAD, it has more options, it allows user-scripts using ECMAScript (JS). I think community did a regression in LibreCAD ("fork" from QCAD), while QCAD mantainer is doing a great job.

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both are a bit different now, there is a very intersting DWG import development in LibreCAD. Regarding FreeCAD, the whole idea of parametric models is that everything is regenerated when you change somehting. So yes, extracted 2D plans will change if you change one element of the model.

    When I add something ( like a wall ) it's way too big compared to the grid.
    It's about 10 times bigger then the grid.
    Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to change some settings somewhere ( maybe for the grid )?
    I use version 0.16 with ( i believe ) default settings.

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to change the size of the grid maybe? In 0.16 you need to go in Edit->Preferences->Draft. In 0.17 you can do that directly from the selectplane button

    • @jovlem
      @jovlem 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some reason when I add something it won't use the default settings from preferences menu ( for a wall the width and height ).
      Do I need to tell it somewhere that it should use these default settings?

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it should just work... Check that you are using the right units, at the moment the preference pages only work in mm

    Yorik van Havre me desculpe por estar a comunicar por aqui, é que notei que por outros lados não recebo respostas. Estou seguindo o desenvolvimento do FreeCAD. Achei interessante a nova bancada de trabalho "TechDraw" até mais intuitiva. Gostaria de saber se é possível configurar a cota para o estilo arquitetura? Ou será que esta funcionalidade ainda não foi adicionada? Como é que se coloca o Hathed?

    • @YorikvanHavre

      Em vez de usar a seta no cruzamento da linha de cota e linha de chamada, pelo menos aqui em Cabo Verde usamos mais o ponto ou traço diagonal. Meu Email - drrufagomes@gmail.com assim posso mandar imagem.

    Some issues I'm having: 1) the fact to use meters instead of millimeters when working on buildings. 2) When I export a model to a drawing, it does not export correctly the lines width, the lines style and the patterns filling wires. 3) I have to export a model to a drawing every time I change the model. Only with these three issues fixed, this software would be totally awesome. Another thing to fix is the built-in function to export a model to dxf. It's not working. Version: 0.16+dfsg2-3 (from Debian 9 stable).

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) You can work in the unit of your choice. Edit -> PReferences -> Document -> Units. 2) It depends much on the workflow and format you used, but indeed many features are still missing. 3) The 2D drawing, whichever method/workbench you choose, reflects the changes you do to the model. But indeed you still need to reexport the file each time.

    • @code8860
      @code8860 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the answer, Yorik! In the point 1 I'm using MKS for the meters: if now I want to move a line 15 cm (0.15 m) I have to specify the "m" of meters every time, otherwise it uses "mm". It would be very useful and productive if the program worked in meters automatically everywhere (excepting in the drawing layout, then mm is ok). The input could be ".15" (even without the 0 in the units side) and the program should interpret 0.15 m. About the third point, I discovered the F5 key, it does a part of the job, excepting if I add a new element to the model. The solution for this would be the feature of layers, so then you add layers instead of models. AutoCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD, Allplan, ArchiCAD have layers system to print through them. Perhaps you could use "Group" to send the whole Group to a drawing, so it will add all the new elements of this group to the drawing as well. Anyway, FreeCAD surprised me a lot, I will follow its development more closely. Regards! :)

      +Yorik van Havre como é que eu faço para colocar uma porta ou janela a 1.2m da parede ou no meio de uma parede. Estou empolgado com o programa, mas não encontro vídeoaula para arquitetura desde o começo ao fim do processo. Eu quero libertar-me dos programas proprietários e também não quero usar programas piratas. Por isso o FreeCAD surgiu como uma alternativa muito interessante. Ele tem potencial de se tornar um grande software para arquitetos e não só para os engenheiros mecânicos.
      Gostaria de saber sua opinião sobre o software da ACCA - Edificius - que tem aquisição gratuito mas é cobrado por por cada impressão.

      +Danilson Gomes o mais fácil é ligar apenas o "near snap" e colocar a janela no meio da face onde quer por ela, depois ajustar manualmente a posição do sketch mexendo seu
      placement ou com Draft move. Sobre Edificius não, sei, nunca testei ainda
